Two U.S. bombers hold firing drills with South Korean forces Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:56 PM PDT Two U.S. supersonic bombers conducted live-fire drills on Saturday in South Korea in a show of force following North Korea's test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the South's military said. The pair of B-1B Lancer strategic bombers flew from a U.S. base on Guam and were joined by U.S. and South Korean jet fighters to conduct the simulated destruction of an enemy ballistic missile launcher and underground facilities, the South's air force said. North Korea announced on Tuesday it successfully test-launched an ICBM, saying the missile was capable of carrying a large and heavy nuclear warhead. |

Trump, Putin shake hands ahead of closely watched G20 meeting Posted: 07 Jul 2017 07:22 AM PDT By Roberta Rampton and Jeff Mason HAMBURG (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a veteran businessman and a former spy, shook hands on Friday ahead of the most highly anticipated face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit. Trump has said he wants to find ways to work with Putin, a goal made more difficult by sharp differences over Russia's actions in Syria and Ukraine, and allegations Moscow meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. In a video of the encounter, Trump was later shown patting Putin on the back. |

U.S. appeals court denies Hawaii bid to narrow Trump travel ban Posted: 07 Jul 2017 05:35 PM PDT By Dan Levine SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday rejected Hawaii's request to issue an emergency order blocking parts of President Donald Trump's temporary travel ban while the state sought clarification over what groups of people would be barred from travel. The U.S. Supreme Court last month let the ban on travel from six Muslim-majority countries go forward with a limited scope, saying it could not apply to anyone with a credible "bona fide relationship" with a U.S. person or entity. The Trump administration then decided that spouses, parents, children, fiancés and siblings would be exempt from the ban, while grandparents and other family members traveling from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen would be barred. |

G20 leaders' statement on climate change highlights rift with US Posted: 08 Jul 2017 07:42 AM PDT World leaders have made clear the US's isolated stance on climate change, with 19 of the G20 countries affirming their commitment to the "irreversible" Paris climate agreement. After lengthy negotiations that stretched well into Saturday, the final joint statement from the meeting in Hamburg notes Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Paris deal while stating that the world's other major economies all still support the international effort to slow dangerous global warming. |
Aztec golden wolf sacrifice yields rich trove in Mexico City Posted: 07 Jul 2017 05:37 AM PDT By David Alire Garcia MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A sacrificial wolf elaborately adorned with some of the finest Aztec gold ever found and buried more than five centuries ago has come to light in the heart of downtown Mexico City, once home to the Aztec empire's holiest shrines. The quality and number of golden ornaments is highly unusual and includes 22 complete pieces - such as symbol-laden pendants, a nose ring and a chest plate - all made from thin sheets of the precious metal, lead archaeologist Leonardo Lopez told Reuters. Held in a stone box, the cache was discovered in April near the capital city's bustling main square, the Zocalo, behind the colonial-era Roman Catholic cathedral and off the steps of what was once the most important Aztec ceremonial temple, now known as the Templo Mayor. |

The most popular Roomba is still on sale, but this hot robot vacuum is even cheaper Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:34 AM PDT The Roomba 650 is one of the most affordable robot vacuum cleaners in the Roomba lineup, so it stands to reason that it's also the most popular. It's packed full of features and yet it costs hundreds less than some of iRobot's premium Roomba vacuums — especially when it's on sale on Amazon, like it is right now. But there's another model from a Roomba rival that's on sale for even less than the 650, and it also happens to be the best-selling model in Amazon's indoor robotic vacuum category right now. It also has a few awesome features that are nowhere to be found on the Roomba. Check out the ECOVACS DEEBOT M80 Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with Mop and Water Tank, you'll be glad you did. Here are some highlights from the product page:

Another senior officer in Lamu said that a search was underway for any other bodies but that progress was hampered by fears of improvised explosive devices that might have been planted in the area. |

Outbreak of hantavirus infections kills three in Washington state Posted: 06 Jul 2017 08:32 PM PDT Five people have been stricken with the rare, rodent-borne hantavirus illness in Washington state since February, three of whom have died, in the state's worst outbreak of the disease in at least 18 years, public health officials reported on Thursday. The three fatal cases also mark the highest death toll from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Washington state during a single year since the respiratory ailment was first identified in the "Four Corners" region of the U.S. Southwest in 1993. Victims in the latest outbreak were men and women ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s from four counties across the state, said David Johnson, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Health. |

Android’s biggest issue is as prominent in 2017 as it’s ever been Posted: 07 Jul 2017 11:03 AM PDT If you thought that this might be the year that Google finally solved its Android fragmentation problem, I have some bad news for you. As of July 6th, Android 7.0 (the most recent version of the OS) is running on 11.5% of Android devices. That's 4.4% higher than May 2nd, but don't forget that Android 7.0 first began rolling out to Nexus devices in August 2016. Quite a wait for double-digit adoption.
Breaking down the numbers a bit further, Google's Android Dashboard shows that 10.6% of Android users have upgraded to Android 7.0, but that only 0.9% have reached Android 7.1, which rolled out last October. To put those figures into perspective, Apple claims that 86% of iOS users are running iOS 10 as of July 5th. iOS 10 was released in September, a few weeks after Android 7.0. With just weeks left until the launch of Android 8.0, nearly a third of Android users are still running Android Lollipop, which encompasses versions 5.0 and 5.1. While Android 6.0 Marshmallow has finally surpassed Lollipop's market share, 30.1% of Android users are still working with an OS from 2014. Meanwhile, 17.1% of Android users are still running 4.4 KitKat and 9.5% (or greater) are using phones with versions between 2.3.3 Gingerbread and 4.3 Jelly Bean. Nearly 60% of Android users have yet to upgrade to an operating system that rolled out after October 2015. That's not a good sign. Google has promised that Android 8.0 will "make it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android," but we've heard that line before. We remain cautiously optimistic that Android's distribution numbers will become more respectable in the near future. |
