Hong Kong's new leader Carrie Lam: profile Posted: 30 Jun 2017 08:08 PM PDT Carrie Lam's swearing-in as Hong Kong's new leader on Saturday marks the culmination of the lifelong civil servant's career as she inherits a divided city fearful of China's encroaching influence. Lam, 59, was widely seen as Beijing's preferred candidate when she was elected in March by a mainly pro-China committee representing special interest groups, from real estate and agriculture to teaching and medicine, as well as lawmakers. Before landing the top job, Lam served as deputy to her highly unpopular predecessor Leung Chun-ying, slammed as a puppet of Beijing. |

Ukraine points finger at Russian security services in recent cyber attack Posted: 01 Jul 2017 03:50 AM PDT By Pavel Polityuk KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Saturday that Russian security services were involved in a recent cyber attack on the country, with the aim of destroying important data and spreading panic. The SBU, Ukraine's state security service, said the attack, which started in Ukraine and spread around the world on Tuesday, was by the same hackers who attacked the Ukrainian power grid in December 2016. Ukrainian politicians were quick to blame Russia for Tuesday's attack, but a Kremlin spokesman dismissed "unfounded blanket accusations". |
Tanker and freighter collide off Britain Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:58 AM PDT A tanker and a cargo ship collided off Britain on Saturday on one of the world's busiest shipping routes, but no injuries or spills were reported, authorities said. The tanker had 38,000 tonnes of petrol onboard when it collided at around 0100 GMT with a 220-metre (720-foot) cargo vessel in the Strait of Dover, which is where the North Sea and the Channel meet. "Although both vessels have been damaged, there is no water ingress and no pollution," Britain's maritime and coastguard agency said. |

The USS Stethem, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, the official said. The operation was first reported by Fox News on Sunday. |
Central America hit by massive power outages Posted: 01 Jul 2017 08:19 PM PDT San José (AFP) - A huge power outage plunged millions of people across Central America into darkness Saturday, as authorities from Panama to Costa Rica to El Salvador scrambled to restore electrical service. The blackout affected some five million people in Costa Rica alone, where officials largely had managed to restore service after a nationwide power outage lasting about five hours. Authorities pinned blame for the power outages on a downed Panamanian transmission line that adversely affected the power supply for much of the region. |

The bus was travelling from Samara on the Volga river to Izhevsk, around 900 kilometres (550 miles) east of Moscow, when the accident happened, according to the Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes. The bus rolled over and caught on fire as a result of the collision, the regional interior ministry said, adding that it would be arresting both drivers. |

U.S. Navy combat ship USS Coronado and the Philippine frigate BRP Ramon Alcaraz carried out their joint patrol of the Sulu Sea, a body of water off the southern Philippines where militant groups have carried out kidnappings, a US embassy statement said. "These patrols enhance regional peace and stability," the US naval commander, Rear Admiral Don Gabrielson said, according to the statement. |

Californians take a shine to solar power Posted: 01 Jul 2017 06:57 PM PDT Jacquie Barnbrook had grown tired of the high electricity bills and her gas-guzzling luxury car when she finally decided to take the plunge last year. The 52-year-old Los Angeles resident joined an ever-growing number of Californians who are switching to solar power for their energy needs in a bid to not only save money but to also do their part for the environment in a state setting the pace for the rest of the country in that sector. Nearly 4.9 million homes are powered by solar energy in California -- the nation's green trailblazer and the most populous state -- and that number is expected to continue to grow, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a non-profit trade association. |
What Is the Difference Between Key Limes and Conventional Limes? Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:00 AM PDT Well, in the case of "regular" limes vs. Key limes, the truth is, not a ton. Of course there's more separating the two than meets the eye, but the differences are fairly minute and, indeed, the two can often be used interchangeably in recipes without risk of total disaster. Key limes are smaller than the standard Persian limes and have thin, leathery skin. |
Justin Trudeau forgot a whole province during his Canada Day speech Posted: 01 Jul 2017 12:43 PM PDT Well, well, well... look who's human after all. Justin Trudeau accidentally forgot to mention Alberta while passionately listing Canada's states and provinces during his Canada Day speech Saturday. SEE ALSO: Ring in Canada Day with Trudeau's best moments (and forget about Trump for a while) The gaffe did not go unnoticed. (just kidding, it was a slip) #Canada150 pic.twitter.com/uuPp1p4uOF — CBC Politics (@CBCPolitics) July 1, 2017 Of course, Trudeau is nothing if not polite, so after broadcast host Sandra Oh pointed out the error, he trotted back out to say "I love you, Alberta!" He also tweeted an apology — a uniquely Canadian thing to do on Canada Day. Got too excited somewhere over the Rockies. Sorry Alberta, I love you. Happy Canada Day! — Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) July 1, 2017 Interestingly, Canada's two new astronauts — introduced at Saturday's festivities — are both from Alberta. "I declare on this day, at midnight, the end of the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever of the Ebola virus in DRC," Ilunga said. |

One of the suspects was identified as Ibrahim al-Adani, who was said to have run Al-Qaeda's finances in the region. The United States considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, to be the group's most dangerous branch and has conducted a long-running drone war against its leaders. |
Trump to speak with Xi, Abe as North Korea, steel issues loom Posted: 02 Jul 2017 12:03 AM PDT U.S. President Donald Trump will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday, calls that come as frustration builds in the White House over North Korea's nuclear program and overcapacity in the steel market. The talks come ahead of meetings he will hold with both leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, on July 7-8 where trade practices are expected to be high on the agenda. Trump, who pledged a hard line on trade during his campaign for office, has been weighing new quotas or tariffs on steel imports for national security reasons and plans to discuss his concerns at the G20. |

Glamorous pet owners are getting matching manicures with their cats Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:33 AM PDT First thing's first: you should never, ever paint your pet's claws with actual nail polish. It's toxic to them! But should you hunger for you and your cat to have matching manicures, there's a glamorous alternative. Cristi, a cat owner from California, routinely purchases nail caps for her cat, Wednesday. One day, she found a purple, glittery set — the same purple glitter as her own manicure. May could walk out of Brexit talks over exit bill: Telegraph Posted: 01 Jul 2017 04:33 PM PDT British business leaders have been told to brace for the possibility that Prime Minister Theresa May's government may walk out of Brexit talks this year, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The move would be designed for "domestic consumption" to show the government is negotiating hard with the European Union, the newspaper reported. The Sunday Telegraph said the briefing of business leaders by a senior May aide took place after last month's general election and the person has since left in the recent overhaul at the top of government. |

Germany produced record 35 percent of power from renewables in first half Posted: 02 Jul 2017 04:48 AM PDT Germany raised the proportion of its power produced by renewable energy to 35 percent in the first half of 2017 from 33 percent the previous year, according to the BEE renewable energy association. Germany is aiming to phase out its nuclear power plants by 2022. Its renewable energy has been rising steadily over the last two decades thanks in part to the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) which was reformed this year to cut renewable energy costs for consumers. |
