In a daring heist reminiscent of Blake Edwards' Pink Panther films, the crowns of King Karl IX and Queen Christina, as well as a royal orb, were snatched from Strängnäs Cathedral by two men on Tuesday around lunchtime. Police raided two locations in Strängnäs on Wednesday but admitted they were struggling to find any clues. "It's 1-0 to them right now," police spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Swedish reporters. "It is not possible to put an economic value on this, it is invaluable items of national interest." The 1611 gold burial crowns were originally interred with the couple but were later exhumed and had been on display in a locked cabinet in the cathedral, 60 miles west of Stockholm. "The alarm went off when the burglars smashed the security glass and stole the artifacts," Catharina Frojd, a spokeswoman for the 14th-century cathedral said. Another police spokesman, Stefan Dangardt, said Interpol had been brought in to help apprehend the jewel thieves, along with Swedish helicopters and canine units. "Several people were seen leaving the church by boat or water scooter after the theft. We have spoken to witnesses, but we are interested in further information from anyone that has made any observations," he added. Tom Rowsell, who was having lunch outside the cathedral where he is to be married this weekend, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet he saw two men dash from the building toward a motorboat waiting on Lake Malaren. "I saw a white little boat with an outboard motor on the back. The two men hurriedly jumped on board and it sped off," he said. The police have issued vague descriptions of the thieves: one is said to be skinny and wearing a light beige jacket with dark long pants. In 2013, King Johan III's burial regalia was stolen from Vasteras Cathedral. It was recovered several days later in a garbage bag left on a a countryside road, following an anonymous tip. Britain's own crown jewels were nearly stolen in 1671 by Anglo-Irish Colonel Thomas Blood, who was captured as he fled the Tower of London with St Edward's Crown, the Scepter with the Cross, and the Sovereign's Orb.

The US Treasury is looking at whether to allow people to take account of inflation when they work out what capital gains tax they owe. Steven Mnuchin, the US treasury secretary, said in a recent interview that officials were looking at whether the change could be achieved through regulation rather than legislation, according to The New York Times. Such a move would mean Congress would be bypassed. Capital gains tax is usually levied around 20 per cent for Americans and is paid on assets, such as property or stocks, when they are sold. Under the current system, the tax is paid on the difference between the original purchase price and the new sale price. Under Mr Mnuchin's idea, the original price would be adjusted for inflation – dramatically reducing the amount which would be hit by the tax. The change, according to estimates cited in The New York Times, could result in a tax cut worth $100 billion and would disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans, who own more assets. The paper said Mr Mnuchin had discussed the idea on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit meeting in Argentina this month. He was quoted as saying: "If it can't get done through a legislation process, we will look at what tools at Treasury we have to do it on our own and we'll consider that "We are studying that internally, and we are also studying the economic costs and the impact on growth."
