US synagogue attack 'inhuman act of violence': pope Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:30 AM PDT Pope Francis on Sunday called a deadly attack on a synagogue in the United States "an inhuman act of violence", expressing his "closeness to the Jewish community". A man suspected of bursting into the synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday during a baby-naming ceremony and gunning down 11 people has been charged with murder, in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in recent US history. "We are all, in truth, wounded by this inhuman act of violence," Francis said at the end of the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter's Square. |

Megyn Kelly was meant to bridge the partisan divide. She failed Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:26 AM PDT Following Megyn Kelly's latest demonstration of poor judgment and ignorance by condoning the wearing of blackface for Halloween, NBC is now set to part ways with her. In early 2017, NBC News chief Andrew Lack hired Kelly from Fox News with the hope that she could appeal to conservative viewers without alienating their more liberal MSNBC viewers. |

Hundreds of Salvadorans form new US-bound caravan Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:30 AM PDT A group of around 300 migrants left the El Salvador capital on foot on Sunday heading for the border with Guatemala in the hope of eventually realizing the "American dream" and reaching the United States. The group, made up mostly of men, has been inspired by the much larger Honduran caravan already in Mexico and striving to reach the US. "We're a little more than 300 people, but as we walk we hope more compatriots will join us," Hernan Quinteros, a 48-year-old retired army sergeant, told AFP. |
Mural depicting Beto O'Rourke as a superhero is vandalised days after being unveiled Posted: 28 Oct 2018 12:07 PM PDT A mural depicting the American senate candidate Beto O'Rourke as a superhero has been vandalised just days after it was unveiled. It comes as the hotly contested race to be Texas senator between the Democrat candidate and Republican Ted Cruz was described as a "toss-up" by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Initially, the mural, created by the artist Chris Rogers, featured Mr O'Rourke in front of a Texas flag with his shirt unbuttoned and revealing the letter B reminiscent to that of Superman's S. |

Saudi Arabia says it is beacon of 'light' against Iran despite Khashoggi crisis Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT Saudi Arabia is the lynchpin of a U.S.-backed regional bloc against growing Iranian influence in the Middle East but the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at its consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. One is a (Saudi) vision of light ... One is a (Iranian) vision of darkness which seeks to spread sectarianism throughout the region," Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a security summit in Bahrain. "History tells us that light always wins out against the dark ... The question is how do we defeat them." U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday that the killing of Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Saudi policy, undermined regional stability and that Washington would take additional measures against those responsible after announcing visa bans on 21 suspects in the case. |

NYC pups in cute and creative costumes for annual Halloween Dog Parade Posted: 28 Oct 2018 01:16 PM PDT New York City's annual Halloween Dog Parade almost didn't happen because of problems with insurance. But sponsors saved the fun event in which hundreds of canines compete in front of thousands of spectators. This year's festivities took place at the East River Park Amphitheater rather than its traditional home, Tompkins Square Park in the city's East Village neighborhood. Despite these shakeups, the dogs' outfits were just as adorable and imaginative as ever. (Michael Walsh/Yahoo News) |
Trump says media uses bomb case to score political points against him Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:52 PM PDT Hours after a Trump supporter, Cesar Sayoc, was arrested in Florida in the bomb case, Trump told a political rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, that political violence must never be tolerated. "We have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me and the Republican Party," Trump said. Trump appeared to be commenting on cable news blanket coverage of the bomb case and how the people targeted are frequently criticized by the president. |

Caravan migrants: Single mother explains why she left her two children behind to journey to the US Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:07 AM PDT Ruth Gomez had been calling home to her mother in Honduras every evening, but it was a bittersweet experience. Earlier this month, Ms Gomez and two of her brothers heard about the migrant caravan on television and decided on the spot to join. "There are no opportunities for us in Honduras," she said, wiping away tears as she talked of the decision to leave her children and showing a photograph of them. |
N. Korea hospital director rejects Warmbier torture charges Posted: 27 Oct 2018 08:16 PM PDT The director of the North Korean hospital that treated Otto Warmbier, the US student who died after being held in the country, rejected fresh allegations that he was tortured in custody. The 22-year-old was jailed in the North for more than a year and was released in a comatose state in 2017 but died shortly after returning home. The director of the Pyongyang Friendship Hospital -- which treated Warmbier -- slammed the claims as a "total distortion of the truth" in a statement carried by the North's official KCNA news agency late Saturday. |

Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT Griffin, Ga. — "Life happens," Stacey Abrams instructs a small but boisterous crowd in a sun-drenched park south of Atlanta. In her campaign to be the first Democrat elected Georgia's governor since 1998, and America's first African-American female governor, she, even more than most Democrats, is depending on "low-propensity voters," prodding to the polls many who have rarely voted in midterm elections. Chatting on her campaign bus, she exudes Yale Law School and the University of Texas's Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, fluent about issues and droll about her mother's reaction to "my trajectory of downward economic mobility" when she left the practice of law to enter politics, rising to be minority leader of the state house of representatives. |

A Syrian Democratic Forces commander, asking not to be named, confirmed the SDF retreat from the Hajin pocket near the Iraqi border seven weeks into an offensive. The SDF, who are backed by air strikes of the US-led coalition, launched its campaign to retake the IS holdout on September 10. |

Recreational pot measure has high interest in North Dakota Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:34 AM PDT BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Backers of legalizing marijuana in North Dakota have high hopes that voters will approve the drug's use for anyone old enough to drink alcohol. But they could be in for a bummer because opponents have spent far more money against the proposal. Critics say it would mean big problems for law enforcement and society. It comes as North Dakota still is setting up a medical marijuana system that voters approved by a wide margin two years ago. |

Viral clip of Donald Trump and his umbrella is a metaphor for his whole presidency Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:36 AM PDT Donald Trump did more than just play the victim-blaming game after Saturday's horrific synagogue shooting. He also abandoned an umbrella as he climbed aboard Air Force One. In a clip that quickly went viral, Trump is seen walking up the stairs leading to his presidential jet, umbrella in hand. As he reaches the door, Trump's hand drops lower and lower until the umbrella is scraping the floor. Seconds later, he ditches it entirely and disappears into the plane. Unbelievable — Trump doesn't know how to close an umbrella, so inside of closing it and bringing it aboard Air Force One with him, he just dropped it outside the plane. pic.twitter.com/G5AtmPaRvz — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 27, 2018 SEE ALSO: Donald Trump's election was a 'traumatic experience' for many college students If video shares are any indication, the American public loves seeing Trump play the part of a buffoon. Probably because those moments offer a momentary distraction from the fact the he's still the U.S. president. And so it went that this video surfaced and many in the Twitter peanut gallery seized on the most obvious angle for razzing the president: LOL Trump can't close an umbrella. Which, fair! He doesn't close that umbrella. Tip: if you're gonna to join a cult try to find one where the leader knows how to close an umbrellaTrump today. When you can't figure it out, just drop it pic.twitter.com/Ksw1m8LtEr — ☇RiotWomenn☇ (@riotwomennn) October 27, 2018 But there's more going on here. See, this whole ditching of the umbrella is a metaphor. Right? Trump is TrumpThe plane is moneyThe umbrella is our well being https://t.co/JCkkrhS69v — amber ruffin (@ambermruffin) October 27, 2018 This umbrella is violence in the USA. Trump built it up, left it at the door, and then calmly just walked away from it while it does it's thing... https://t.co/AufsxLTXKt — Charlie McEwan (@CharMcew) October 27, 2018 Metaphor alert. Trump cannot close his umbrella as he boards his plane. Just leaves it there. An upturned, abandoned umbrella, rolling about in the wind. pic.twitter.com/4mOsSdfkz2 — SimonNRicketts (@SimonNRicketts) October 27, 2018 Personally, I look at this viral umbrella clip and see a perfect reflection of the man we've come to know since he settled into the Oval Office. Trump is in this for no one other than himself (and maybe his family, I guess). He plays to his base and riles progressives to maintain chaos. He proposes destructive policies with an eye toward lining his pockets. He's not here to "own the libs" specifically, but doing so is useful sleight of hand. It keeps his voting base focused on the vague idea of an enemy at home, rather than the politicians who continue to grift their way around Washington's as-yet-undrained swamp. And now we have this umbrella. A useful tool in the moment as Trump holds it over his head to shield himself from the rain. Then, once he gets to the moment of boarding Air Force One, he drops the umbrella without any care or thought. It's just an umbrella, his defenders will no doubt scream. And they're right, it is. But the lack of regard shown in this one instance says so much about the man who was carrying that umbrella. Sometimes things go viral because they're cute, or horrifying, or incredible, or in some other way highly noteworthy. And sometimes they just resonate with the moment. On a day when the nation and the world were focused on the horrors unfolding in Pittsburgh, Trump's stupid umbrella moment resonated. WATCH: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's an inflatable Trump baby flying around London |

Brazil candidates make final campaign pitches Posted: 27 Oct 2018 06:30 PM PDT Brazil's presidential candidates made their final push for voters Saturday, with pitches that echoed the gulf between them: leftist Fernando Haddad held a "peace rally" in the favelas, while far-right frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro took to Twitter. A day before a runoff that will decide who leads Latin America's biggest country for the next four years, Brazilians are deeply divided -- though the clear favorite is Bolsonaro, an ex-army captain nicknamed the "Tropical Trump," whose aggressive social media campaign has tapped into widespread anti-establishment rage. Two final polls published Saturday gave Bolsonaro a lead of between eight and 10 percentage points, with around 55 percent of the vote. |
