US missionary's body could be lost in battle to preserve isolated tribe Posted: 24 Nov 2018 12:23 AM PST The body of American missionary-adventurer John Allen Chau may never be recovered from the lost island where he fell in a volley of arrows fired by a reclusive tribe whose existence is threatened by the modern world, say experts. The menace to the Sentinelese from Chau's one-man invasion is such that tribal rights specialists say no murder charges will ever be laid and Chau's body will have to stay hidden to protect what is probably the world's last pre-neolithic tribe. Indian authorities -- who do not dare enforce their rule over North Sentinel island -- have not even tried to send police ashore to question the tribe who have been greeting outsiders with hostility for centuries. |

Utah Teens Steal Plane From An Airstrip And Take It For a Joyride Posted: 23 Nov 2018 05:10 PM PST A pair of teenagers had a wild Thanksgiving after stealing and driving a tractor to a local airstrip, where they nabbed an airplane, took it for a joyride and then landed safely back at the small airport in Vernal, Utah. The two boys, ages 14 and 15, had been staying at the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center in Vernal when they left to stay with friends in nearby Jensen. On Thanksgiving, the pair took a tractor and drove it to a private airstrip. |

Rain complicates grim task of finding remains of California wildfire Posted: 23 Nov 2018 05:51 PM PST The so-called Camp Fire virtually obliterated the city of Paradise, located 175 miles (280 km) northeast of San Francisco, on Nov. 8, killing at least 84 people and destroying nearly 14,000 homes. Over 600 people from Paradise and surrounding communities remained unaccounted for, according to a list provided by the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Drone footage https://buttecountyrecovers.org/Maps provided by the town of Paradise to help residents see if their homes survived showed how fire leapt from house to house in the mountain community of 27,000. |

Four killed as gunmen attack Chinese consulate in Karachi Posted: 23 Nov 2018 03:16 AM PST Four people were killed on Friday when gunmen armed with hand grenades and a suicide vest stormed the Chinese consulate in the Pakistani city of Karachi, officials said, with the attack claimed by a separatist group which branded Beijing "an oppressor". Pakistani authorities said that security forces had secured the area after the attack, the latest assault on Chinese nationals in the country, where Beijing has poured billions of dollars into one of the largest projects in its massive Belt and Road programme. China "strongly condemned" the attack and asked Pakistan to take measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the country, as well as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) mega-project. |
Posted: 23 Nov 2018 02:00 PM PST Acommunity kitchen supported by the Duchess of Sussex is housed inside a mosque linked by experts to individuals connected to "terrorist acts" and run by an imam who says girls who listen to music risk becoming strippers. Meghan visited the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre on Wednesday after championing a cookbook to raise funds for the "Hubb Community Kitchen" project there to help victims of the fire at nearby Grenfell Tower. In February it emerged the 37-year-old royal had made secret visits to the mosque in Westbourne Grove, which has also hosted Princes William and Harry, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn in recent months. An investigation by the Henry Jackson Society (HJS), the anti-extremism think tank, has linked the mosque, opened by Prince Charles in 2001, to 19 jihadists, including Islamic State executioner Mohammed Emwazi, also known as Jihadi John. Imam Samer Darwish, who has been photographed with Mrs May, Mr Corbyn and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, presents a weekly show on the Islam Channel where he has condoned bigamy, suggested women should not pray while on their periods, claimed girls who listen to music risk becoming strippers and said women should not cry when visiting graves. Samer Darwish, Imam of the Al Manaar mosque in Acklam Road, west London. Credit: You Tube/You Tube The comments are likely to shock the Duchess, who has described herself as a feminist and is committed to championing gender equality. On Wednesday, Meghan visited the kitchen at Al Manaar after it was refurbished with proceeds from the sale of the Together cookbook of recipes inspired by women involved in the "Hubb" project, for which she wrote the foreword. So far 39,000 copies have been sold raising £210,000 which has been channeled into the community group based at the kitchen via The Royal Foundation. Research by the HJS suggests the mosque was once attended by three of the four "Beatles", the Isil terror cell charged with guarding, torturing and killing hostages in Syria and Iraq. As well as Emwazi, Choukri Ellekhlifi, Alexanda Kotey and Aine Davis, all from west London, also have links with Al Manaar. Emwazi and Ellekhlifi were associates in London and it seems highly likely that they fought together after joining Isil in late 2012 and early 2013. Ellekhlifi reportedly fought with al-Qaeda affiliate Jhabat al-Nusra and was killed in 2013 near Aleppo. Mohammed Emwazi during his time at Westminster University Credit: TMG/TMG Kotey would allegedly stand outside Al Manaar and preach extremist propaganda, such as arguing that suicide bombings did not violate the Koran. In 2008, Kotey became involved with the London Boys, a radical network linked to terrorist attacks in the UK, including the 7/7 bombings. According to the US State Department, Kotey acted as a guard for Isil and "likely engaged in the group's executions and exceptionally cruel torture methods, including electronic shock and waterboarding". He is currently being held in solitary confinement in Syria. Former drug dealer Davis oversaw beheadings of British hostages, including British aid workers Alan Henning and David Haines, and US journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley. He was convicted of terrorism charges in Turkey, 2017 and sentenced to seven and a half years. Davis's wife Amal el-Wahabi, the first woman to be convicted of terrorism offences connected to Syria, formerly worked as a nursery assistant at Al Manaar. Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre in west London Credit: TMG You Tube videos show Mr Darwish, who preaches at the mosque for three and a half days a week, speaking on the Islam Channel. In one clip he says of women on their periods: "Bleeding, no praying. Stop bleeding, just pray. I've seen some of our sisters holding Koran using glove, which is a good idea." Condoning bigamy in another, he says: "In Islam, it is permissible, yes, to marry more than one wife." He also says listening to music or dancing is haram (sinful) except as reward for memorising the Koran, adding: "Those who are uncovering up some parts of their body and you will have no control in your daughter." On women visiting graves, he says: "There is no harm for the women to visit the grave, but this is also conditional that she will not commit something haram, she will not cry to the extent to the point that she start screaming and stuff." In other footage, he claims a man can "bring back" his divorced wife "by having sexual intercourse" with her. Dr Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, said: "The Duchess of Sussex has been poorly advised over her involvement with a mosque where many former congregants have gone on to commit terrorist acts. This is not one or two isolated cases but 19 separate individuals. A simple Google search would have highlighted concerns over these connections, and the recently expressed views of Imam Darwish." The support that Al Manaar Mosque has given to survivors, their families & the local community following the horrific Grenfell Tower fire continues to demonstrate the true spirit of our city. Good to be back as part of #VisitMyMosque Day. pic.twitter.com/2nV3JGgsbG— Sadiq Khan (@SadiqKhan) February 18, 2018 A Kensington Palace source said: "The funds raised by the cookbook are supporting the Hubb Community Kitchen, which is an independent project that leases space from Al Manaar. The project is empowering the women and helping provide some hope and joy to a community that has gone through unspeakable tragedy." Abdulrahman Sayed, chief executive of the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre said: "Al Manaar has been on the record rejecting and condemning extremism and terrorism. The Charity's vision and mission is to be a vibrant and welcoming community hub and resource that encourages and promotes a sense of belonging, unity and pride for both Muslims and the wider community; and to contribute to building cohesive and resilient communities." He said the mosque could not be held responsible for anything Mr Darwish said outside the mosque but added: "I'm happy to look at what he said and have a word with him about that language." |

Federal agent accused of falling in love with terrorism suspect, impeding investigation Posted: 24 Nov 2018 10:51 AM PST A US special agent stands accused of falling in love and providing top-secret information to her boyfriend, thereby compromising an FBI counterterrorism investigation, it has been reported. Leatrice Malika De Bruhl-Daniels was considered an exemplary employee in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the agency assigned her to a station in the United Arab Emirates, where she met Nadal Diya, who was under investigation for possible terrorism charges. The agency claims Ms De Bruhl-Daniels fell in love with and decided to help the suspect, using her position to inform him of investigations about him. |

The new #RangeRover #Evoque makes its debut, turning heads with its modernist design and bringing accessible luxury to the city and beyond. U.S. lawmaker subpoenas ex-FBI chief and former Attorney General Posted: 23 Nov 2018 10:11 AM PST The Republican chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, Bob Goodlatte, has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch to give depositions in a probe of their handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. A committee statement released on Friday said the two former top law enforcement officials have been repeatedly asked to meet with the Judiciary and Oversight committees "as part of the Committees' joint investigation into decisions made by the Department of Justice in 2016" but "have yet to voluntarily appear," driving the need to issue subpoenas. According to the statement, Comey would be deposed on Dec. 3 and Lynch on Dec. 4. |
Social Democrats Now in Driver's Seat to Solve Swedish Impasse Posted: 23 Nov 2018 04:00 PM PST After more than two months of failed talks, Andreas Norlen, the speaker, on Friday said that he would formally nominate Lofven on Dec. 3 and that a vote on prime minister would take place in the following days. Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson lost the first such vote after he was abandoned by his allies amid disagreements over relying on support from the nationalist. Now acting prime minister, Lofven will need to peel off the Center and Liberal parties from the center-right Alliance, or at the very least convince them not to vote against his government. |

May Appeals to Voters as Gibraltar Spat Drags on: Brexit Update Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:24 AM PST Prime Minister Theresa May is fighting to win domestic backing for her Brexit deal and is appealing directly to voters over the heads of politicians. Theresa May's government has taken the unusual step of launching a blog to "offer rebuttal to criticisms and inaccurate reporting in the lead up to Parliament's meaningful vote" on the prime minister's Brexit deal. The blog so far contains responses to a City A.M. article on "the 10 capitulations of Theresa May" and a Spectator piece giving "the legal verdict" on May's deal. |

APEC host says WTO and trade row scuppered joint declaration Posted: 23 Nov 2018 07:51 AM PST The host of a fractious Asia-Pacific summit said Friday that "alternative" views on free trade and WTO rules prevented members agreeing a joint communique for the first time ever, five days after the US-China trade row overshadowed the APEC meeting. In a chairman's statement following last weekend's summit, Papua New Guinea prime minister Peter O'Neill said members had been unable to agree on sections concerning reform of the World Trade Organisation, and also protectionism. The highlighted paragraphs included a commitment to "improve the functioning of the WTO" by working "together to improve its negotiating, monitoring and dispute settlement functions". |
Leading Syrian activist who opposed regime and Islamists killed in Idlib Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:46 AM PST Gunmen in Syria's rebel-held northwestern province shot and killed on Friday a prominent anti-government journalist who was also a sharp critic of Islamist militants. Raed Fares' US-funded Radio Fresh station provides news of the conflict to Syria's northern provinces and is a source for international news outlets which have largely stayed away from the opposition-held areas amid rising lawlessness. Fares' killing was a blow to the few independent voices that have continued to promote nonviolence and democratic change in the war-torn country. In a June op-ed in The Washington Post, Fares lamented that the US had cut funds to Syria's opposition areas, including the radio station he founded in 2013 in his hometown of Kafranbel in rebel-held Idlib province. He said such a move would only feed extremism. "As a journalist and activist, I felt I had a duty to counter the fundamentalist narratives that are spreading among people who have no other source for hope in our war-torn homeland," Fares wrote in the Post on June 28. His station provided training and jobs for hundreds of young activists and citizen journalists. "If it weren't for us and other independent voices, terrorists would be the only source of information about Syria locally and internationally. For that reason, the terrorist groups (and the regime) see us as a direct threat." Fares and friend Hammoud al-Juneid died after three gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Kafranbel Credit: Kafranbl News Fares survived an earlier assassination attempt in 2014 when he was shot in the chest by armed men. He was abducted by militants affiliated with an al-Qaida group and tortured. He criticized the militants' harassment of its critics. His radio station was raided by militants and bombed by government warplanes. Fares and friend Hammoud al-Juneid died of their wounds after three gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Kafranbel. A third, Ali Dandouch, sitting in the backseat, ducked the bullets and survived, he later told The Associated Press. Dandouch said the gunmen fired at them from a moving vehicle. Social media sites were rife with the news of Fares' killing. "My last friend & hope 4 a better Syria has been killed (today) after being let down by" everyone, Zaina Erhaim, a UK-based Syrian journalist who left the country in 2016, wrote on Twitter. Fares gained fame during the Syrian uprising because of continued support for opposition protests even when the conflict took a violent turn. Mourners attend the funeral of Fares and Jneid Credit: AFP His town gained attention during weekly anti-government protests because of the humorous English-language banners he created for each rally. "Do not send money. Gold is not edible," one banner read, urging the world to free a besieged area instead of sending assistance. He organized protests to express support for the victims of the 2013 Boston bombings, which he called "a sorrowful scene of what happens in Syria every day. Do accept our condolences."
