China intercepts boat with activists suspected on board Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:45 AM PDT Chinese authorities have arrested at least 10 people, including a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist, after its coast guard intercepted a speedboat believed to be heading to Taiwan, media reports said Thursday. The reports, citing unnamed sources, said activist Andy Li was among those detained. Li had been arrested earlier this month with nine others on charges of collusion with foreign forces under a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing and was out on bail. |
Differences over coronavirus aid remain, Pelosi says after talks with White House aide Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:02 PM PDT U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after talks with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Thursday that Democrats and Republicans remain far apart over how much to spend on the next coronavirus relief legislation. In a statement, Pelosi said Democrats had offered to cut the amount in the bill to $2.2 trillion, but she suggested the White House, which has said it is looking to spend $1 trillion, had rejected the offer. "This conversation made clear that the White House continues to disregard the needs of the American people as the coronavirus crisis devastates lives and livelihoods," Pelosi said after a 25-minute call with Meadows. |

RNC video showing violence in 'Biden's America' is actually Barcelona Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:39 AM PDT The Republican National Convention aired a video meant to paint the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations as inherently violent, chaotic events, but included a scene from protests in Barcelona, Spain.A public broadcaster in Catalonia reported that the images in question - of fires burning in the streets - were captured in 2019 in Barcelona. The protests in Spain began after a Spanish court sentenced Catalan separatists to prison. |

Putin Says His Men Are Standing by Ready to Go into Belarus If Protests ‘Get Out of Hand’ Posted: 27 Aug 2020 04:42 AM PDT Vladimir Putin says he has formed a reserve of law-enforcement officers to send to Belarus to help President Alexander Lukashenko if necessary, Russian media reported Thursday. Putin said he will not deploy these forces unless "extremist elements in Belarus cross a line and start plundering." Speaking to the state-run Rossia 1 broadcaster, he said the agents would be on standby in case pro-democracy protests strengthened. "We've agreed that [the reserve] will not be used until the situation starts getting out of control," Putin said, according to The Moscow Times.Earlier in the week, Russian media reported Putin had offered to help, but it was yet unclear in what way. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Russian journalists replaced striking Belarus journalists at the country's state television station in mid-August, and have been spreading Russian propaganda ever since. The Belarus journalists who walked off the job have not been allowed to return, creating a vacuum that likely helped fuel Lukashenko's highly contested presidential win, which sparked country-wide protests calling for his ouster. The Belarus population has long been anti-Russia, with a recent poll showing that 93 percent of the population against Moscow taking over the country, but Lukashenko has been demonstrably pro-Putin.Protests raged after Lukashenko's suspicious re-election against the popular opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who has become the figurehead of the protests and a target of Russian misinformation. U.S., China trade jibes as military tensions worsen Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:10 PM PDT Both are at loggerheads over issues from technology and human rights to Chinese military activities in the disputed South China Sea, with each accusing the other of deliberately provocative behavior. In the latest U.S. move against China ahead of November's presidential election, Washington on Wednesday blacklisted 24 Chinese companies and targeted individuals over construction and military actions in the busy South China Sea waterway. |

This terrifying animation shows how high Hurricane Laura's storm surge might get Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:56 AM PDT If the National Hurricane Center's word on Hurricane Laura's devastation isn't good enough, the Weather Channel has some visuals. On Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center forecast the Louisiana and eastern Texas coasts would see an "unsurvivable storm surge" of 10-20 feet as a Category 4 Laura pulled in; Al Roker said he'd never heard the term used before. The Weather Channel also seemed unprepared for a surge of that magnitude. Its graphics could only show what a storm surge would look like at nine feet, but that was terrifying enough.> The National Hurricane Center has forecasted "unsurvivable storm surge" from Hurricane Laura in parts of Louisiana and Texas. Registered Foreign Agent Pam Bondi Says Biden Is Corrupt Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:02 PM PDT Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, a registered lobbyist for a foreign government that Donald Trump's Justice Department has implicated in a corruption scandal, used her speech at the Republican convention on Tuesday to criticize former Vice pPresident Joe Biden for alleged self-dealing abroad."I fought corruption and I know what it looks like, whether it's done by people wearing pinstripe suits or orange jumpsuits," Bondi declared. "But, when you look at his 47-year career in politics, the people who benefited are his family members, not the American people."Bondi rehashed dubious allegations about Biden's policymaking role in Ukraine, which mirrored arguments made by her and others throughout this year's impeachment trial against President Donald Trump. Bondi was hired by the White House to assist with impeachment messaging late last year. When she took the White House job, Bondi wound down her work on behalf of the government of Qatar, which U.S. authorities recently implicated in a corruption scandal involving their hosting of the 2022 World Cup. In March, Bondi left the White House and restarted her work for Qatar. She remains a member of the President's Commission on Opioids. An executive order imposed by Trump in the early days of his presidency ostensibly bars former administration officials from lobbying for foreign governments, but Bondi appears to have benefited from a loophole in the rule.Bondi's relationship with Trump goes back years and has itself been the target of corruption allegations. In 2013, Trump's since-dissolved foundation made an illegal $25,000 contribution to a political group affiliated with Bondi as the then-attorney general was weighing whether to pursue a fraud investigation against the notorious Trump University. Bondi subsequently passed on the investigation.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Putin says alleged mercenaries were lured to Belarus by foreign spy operation Posted: 27 Aug 2020 04:38 AM PDT President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that a group of Russians who were detained in Belarus prior to its Aug. 9 election and accused of being mercenaries had been lured to Belarus by a Ukrainan-U.S. intelligence operation. Belarus had accused the men of seeking to destabilise the country ahead of its election, marking an unusual diplomatic row with close ally Russia. At the time, Russia had said the men were private security workers on their way to a third country. |
Neighbors with hoses target fires as crews urge them to stop Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:03 PM PDT With California firefighters strapped for resources, residents have organized to put out flames themselves in a large swath of land burning south of San Francisco, defending their homes despite orders to evacuate and pleas by officials to get out of danger. The former head of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the effort near a cluster of wildfires around the city of Santa Cruz is larger and more organized than he recalls in previous blazes. The group of wildfires near Santa Cruz has burned 125 square miles (324 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 500 buildings. |

Jesuit priest calls Lou Holtz's comment on Biden's Catholic faith 'terrible' Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:17 PM PDT Lou Holtz, a former college football coach, caused controversy during the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night when he declared that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is a "Catholic in name only."Biden has been vocal about his faith, which he says has helped him through difficult times in his life, like when his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015. Holtz made his judgment while delivering a speech praising President Trump, saying he is a man who "genuinely cares about people" and is someone Americans can "trust." Hurricane Laura makes landfall, rivaling Louisiana's worst storms Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:10 AM PDT Hurricane Laura made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana, at about 1 a.m. on Thursday, packing sustained winds of up to 150 miles per hour, just shy of a Category 5 hurricane.
