U.S. forces may help evacuate trapped Iraqis Posted: 13 Aug 2014 04:27 PM PDT The United States has not ruled out using American ground forces in an operation to extract thousands of desperate civilians trapped on a mountain by Islamist militants, but they will not engage in combat, a senior White House official said on Wednesday. A team of 130 U.S. military personnel is in the Kurdistan capital of Arbil, urgently drawing up options ranging from creating a safe corridor to an airlift to rescue those besieged on Mount Sinjar for over a week, most of them members of the Yazidi religious minority. "These 130 personnel are not going to be in a combat role in Iraq," White House deputy spokesman Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama, who is on vacation on Martha's Vineyard island in Massachusetts. Rhodes noted that Obama had repeatedly ruled out "reintroducing U.S. forces into combat on the ground in Iraq." But he added: "There are a variety of ways in which we can support the safe removal of those people from the mountain." Rhodes said the intention was to work with Kurdish forces already operating in the region and with the Iraqi military. |

Brazil presidential candidate dies in plane crash Posted: 13 Aug 2014 04:09 PM PDT Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, a contender to unseat President Dilma Rousseff in October, died Wednesday when his jet crashed into a residential area, media network Globo said. Campos, a socialist who has been running third in the polls, was on board a jet that crashed into a gym and houses in the city of Santos, breaking into pieces and sparking a large fire, Globo reported. All seven people aboard, the Brazilian air force told the online and television news network. The plane was en route from Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont airport to Guaruja airport outside Sao Paulo when it hit bad weather, according to aviation authority spokesman Pedro Luis Farcic. |

International rescue plan underway for trapped Yezidis: UK prime minister Posted: 13 Aug 2014 08:56 AM PDT By Andrew Osborn and William James LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron cut short his holiday to return to Britain to chair a meeting to discuss the Iraq crisis on Wednesday, but resisted calls to intervene there militarily and ruled out recalling parliament for now. Cameron returned as Iraq's new prime minister-designate won endorsements from uneasy mutual allies the United States and Iran. He also called on Iraqi leaders to end feuds that have let jihadists seize much of the country. ... |

'Miraculous' survival story in Swiss train plunge Posted: 13 Aug 2014 10:44 AM PDT A landslide derailed a passenger train in the Swiss mountains on Wednesday sending one carriage plunging into a ravine, but it appeared that miraculously there had been no deaths. Terrified passengers crowded into the rear of another carriage in a bid to prevent it from tipping over the edge. "We all rushed to the back of the carriage to put all of our weight there, so that it didn't tip into the abyss," he said. Another carriage remained perched on the edge of the track, half of it hanging over the ravine. |

Six climbers die after fall on France's Mont Blanc Posted: 13 Aug 2014 08:42 AM PDT Six French climbers have died after a terrifying 250-metre fall from Mont Blanc, officials said Wednesday, one of the worst accidents in a decade on Europe's highest mountain. "We are certain that the climbers unfortunately died on the spot after a fall of around 250 metres (800 feet)," rescue police spokesman Frederic Labrunye told reporters. The group of four men and one woman, aged between 27 and 45 and accompanied by a experienced guide, set out on Tuesday for the "Aiguille d'Argentiere" peak on the Mont Blanc massif, which stands at 3,902 metres (12,802 feet). The accident came amid growing fears that Mont Blanc is increasingly becoming a tourist "free-for-all". |

Ecuador quake triggers deadly landslides Posted: 12 Aug 2014 03:49 PM PDT A shallow 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Ecuadoran capital Quito Tuesday, triggering landslides that killed at least two people and violently shaking buildings and homes. Another eight people were injured and three others trapped in the landslides at quarries on the outskirts of Quito, the country's risk management agency said on Twitter. Authorities closed roads around the capital in case of more landslides, and also shut the Quito airport. The quake lasted more than 20 seconds and caused panic in Quito, where residents evacuated buildings after it struck at 2:58 pm (1958 GMT). |

Obama approves disaster aid for wildfire-scorched Wash. state Posted: 12 Aug 2014 03:57 PM PDT President Barack Obama on Tuesday approved federal disaster aid for wildfire-scorched Washington state, as the U.S. West Coast struggles with a near-record fire season that experts say will likely worsen in the coming weeks. The declaration allows federal aid to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in parts of Washington that were affected by wildfires between July 9 and Aug. 5. The order did not approve a request for individual assistance to affected homeowners in central Washington, a decision Governor Jay Inslee said he would appeal. The West Coast fire season, which runs from May to October, is on track to break records for both the number of blazes and acres burned, according to fire teams. |
