Wife convinced Cook to stay on as England skipper Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:54 PM PDT Alastair Cook said support from his wife, Alice, had persuaded him to stay on as England captain after leading the side to a come-from-behind Test series win over India. After last month's 95-run defeat by India in the second Test at Lord's, a result that meant England had gone 10 Tests without a win, Cook faced calls from several former England captains to stand down as skipper. It was a decision vindicated by England ultimately defeating India 3-1 in a five-Test series, a win completed with a crushing innings and 244-run victory at The Oval on Sunday. "It was the support I had from my wife," said Cook, when asked what had persuaded him against resigning as England captain. |

Dzeko close to new five-year City deal Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:38 PM PDT Edin Dzeko, a key figure in Manchester City's 2-0 victory at Newcastle United, is on the verge of signing a new contract that will keep him at the club for the next five years. The Bosnian international's current deal has only 10 months to run and manager Manuel Pellegrini's determination to keep the striker was fully justified by his performance as City beat Newcastle for the 11th time in succession. "He finished last season playing very well and was one of the best players in this game," said Pellegrini. Dzeko created the opening goal at St James' Park for David Silva and the second came in stoppage time from one of his rivals for a place in the City forward line, substitute Sergio Aguero. |
Federer captures 80th career ATP title Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:37 PM PDT Roger Federer won his 80th career title and sixth at the Cincinnati Masters, beating David Ferrer 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to cast himself as a title favourite for the US Open. Federer owns three titles this season (Dubai and Halle) and he ran his career title total to 80 from 121 finals. He increased his match-win lead this season on the ATP to 49 victories, with Rafael Nadal trailing second on 44. Federer, who has played Cincinnati for a decade and a half, was glad to finally win his biggest title since Cincinnati in 2012 and Wimbledon that same summer. |

Power wins in Milwaukee to strengthen IndyCar lead Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:16 PM PDT Australian Will Power closed in on his first IndyCar series title on Sunday with a victory in the 250-mile race at the Milwaukee Mile. He held off late race challenges from Brazilian Tony Kanaan and Colombia's Juan Pablo Montoya -- his Penske team-mate -- beating Montoya across the line by 2.794 seconds. With just two races remaining, Power holds a 39-point lead in the championship standings over team-mate Helio Castroneves of Brazil, who finished 11th. It's the first time Power has won at Milwaukee, a flat one-mile racetrack, and just his third victory on an oval in IndyCar competition. |

The Verge Playlist: Punk Rock Hack Week Posted: 17 Aug 2014 04:05 PM PDT Verge Hack Week starts tomorrow, and we're letting everyone in the company go crazy building and experimenting with new tools on the site. It's going to be fast and messy and a little bit insane — so basically, punk rock. I can get down with that: the internet has always been about restlessness and attitude and DIY spirit, values that are rooted firmly in the punk rock I grew up listening to. |

Obama tells lawmakers Iraq strikes in US interest Posted: 17 Aug 2014 03:34 PM PDT US President Barack Obama told Congress on Sunday that the "limited" airstrikes he has authorized on Iraq to retake its largest dam from militants protected US interests. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the airstrikes supporting security forces were consistent with the War Powers Resolution, which requires congressional approval before the president can launch the country into war. The strikes have been conducted since Friday at the request of the Iraqi government, according to Hayden. It marked the biggest prize yet clawed back from Islamic State militants since they launched a major offensive in northern Iraq in early June. |

Texas Gov. Perry calls indictment politically motivated Posted: 16 Aug 2014 06:08 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN Texas (Reuters) - Texas Governor Rick Perry, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016, said on Saturday an indictment against him for abuse of power was a political move that he intends to fight. Perry was indicted on Friday by a grand jury in Travis County, a Democratic stronghold in the heavily Republican state, on two counts of abuse of power and coercion over a funding veto he made last year that was seen as being intended to force a local prosecutor to resign. "This indictment amounts to nothing more than an abuse of power and I cannot and I will not allow that to happen," Perry told reporters in Austin, Texas. |
