Iran leader denounces 'unworthy' election rhetoric in veiled swipe at Rouhani Posted: 17 May 2017 12:37 PM PDT DUBAI/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the heated rhetoric of Iran's presidential election campaign on Wednesday as "unworthy", a thinly-veiled rebuke of pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani's attacks on his main conservative challenger. The withdrawal of other conservative candidates has turned Friday's election into an unexpectedly tight two-horse race between Rouhani, 68, and hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, a 56-year-old protege of the supreme leader. Khamenei's intervention could help sway the vote by signaling dissatisfaction with Rouhani's conduct. |

Posted: 17 May 2017 12:42 PM PDT President Donald Trump welcomed his "honored" guest, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House recently, but forgot one important thing: how to pronounce his visitor's name. In a joint press conference with the Turkish president, Mr Trump repeatedly mispronounced Mr Erdogan's name, saying it with a hard "g" instead of the soft "w" sound used in many Turkish words. Reporters covering the press conference quickly took note. |

This math question meant for 7-year-olds has everyone stumped Posted: 17 May 2017 03:44 AM PDT A math question apparently meant for seven-year-olds has left adults befuddled. The bonus math question — which allegedly appeared on a first-grade level exam paper in Singapore — has been making the rounds on social media. SEE ALSO: A math problem for 14-year-olds is stumping the world The question shows a circular puzzle with five numbers in it. There are four corresponding blanks that are meant to be filled in, but no further information is given on how to solve it. Image: almondshell/hardwarezoneAdults have been unable to solve it. "Now that I can't solve this, I feel super uncomfortable," said user Kenny Eng on Facebook. "Maybe Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory could have done this when he was seven," said Facebook user Mingli Lin. "I just finished my course on advanced applied math and I can't solve this. Whoever set this is sick," said user Jacky Wu. Where did the math question originally come from? The question first surfaced on an online forum, posted by a user who claims that it was a bonus question taken from a Primary One, or first grade, examination paper. But Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) couldn't confirm this. "From the image, we are unable to ascertain if the question was from a school's Primary 1 examination paper," an MOE spokesperson told Mashable in a statement. However, the question bears a striking resemblance to one that has previously appeared on a math blog by Gordon Burgin, who calls himself an author of Maths Puzzles. ( Mashable has reached out to Burgin for comment). The two questions are almost identical, with only one difference. The bottom-left number in Mr Burgin's puzzle is 20 instead of 2. Image: gordon burginAccording to Burgin, the way to solve his puzzle is this: Image: gordon burginIt's not the first time an exam question has left people stumped In 2015, people in Singapore were similarly unable to solve a math question nicknamed "Cheryl's birthday." The question was first reported to be a fifth-grade level question, but was late revealed to be a ninth-grade Maths Olympiad question. So what is the answer to the original math question you ask? Your guess is as good as mine. WATCH: Someone drilled a hole in an iPhone to make a fidget spinner because... the internet |

Military graft undermines Nigeria's fight against Boko Haram: Transparency Int'l Posted: 18 May 2017 12:34 AM PDT Military corruption is weakening Nigeria's efforts to battle the Islamist insurgency of Boko Haram, the watchdog Transparency International said on Thursday. Its report underlines the difficulty of achieving two key promises of President Muhammadu Buhari's 2015 election campaign: tackling endemic corruption and defeating an insurgency that has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced millions. "Corrupt military officials have been able to benefit from the conflict through the creation of fake defence contracts, the proceeds of which are often laundered abroad in the UK, U.S. and elsewhere," the watchdog said in a statement. |
Philippines' Duterte warns of thousands more drug killings Posted: 18 May 2017 04:11 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he wanted to behead opponents of his drug war and warned 50,000 people could die in the crackdown, after rejecting European Union aid in response to its criticism of the killings. Duterte insisted he would not be intimidated by criticism of the drug war, which rights groups have said could be a crime against humanity. "Don't trust those human rights (critics), if you do I will cut off both your heads," Duterte said in a speech to inaugurate a bridge in the southern Philippines. |

‘Find My Device’ is Google’s new app to find your lost phone Posted: 17 May 2017 10:17 AM PDT Moments before the start of the Google I/O developer conference, Google put its new device-finding app up on the Google Play Store. It's named "Find My Device," which is going to draw a few comparisons to Apple's famous "Find My iPhone" feature. The new app is more than just a name, though. It has received a serious visual overhaul, with a new 3-D map that looks much more 2017. Devices are listed like tabs across the top of the app, which makes it easier to find your smartwatch in case it just slipped off your wrist.
The core functions of the app remain the same: you can see a device on the map, provided it's online, or see the last known location. Provided the device is connected to the internet, you can make it play a sound, lock it, or put it into a "lost device" mode to make it easier to retrieve. The app is obviously designed for use on a friend's Android device, or for using on your own phone to find a lost tablet or watch. If you're trying to find a device from a PC web browser, you're still much better off typing "find my phone" into Google, and using the built-in interface to ping it. The app is available to download right now in the Google Play Store, although we're expecting to here a little more about the redesign at Google's event today. |
Comey, Russia and a 'smoking gun': a roundup of Trump's current woes Posted: 16 May 2017 05:48 PM PDT Devastating news for Donald Trump continued to accumulate on Tuesday night. Devastating news for Donald Trump continued to accumulate on Tuesday night, as reports emerged of a memorandum indicating that Trump had pressured the former FBI director, James Comey, to give up part of a multi-pronged investigation into alleged ties between Russian operatives and the Trump campaign. Democrats called the memo a "smoking gun" and said "history is watching" what Congress does, while even Republicans expressed concern and called on the White House to explain the memo beyond its original broad denial. |

Roger Ailes, former Fox News boss, is dead Posted: 18 May 2017 07:39 AM PDT Roger Ailes, the founding CEO of Fox News Channel, is dead at the age of 77. His wife, Elizabeth, broke the news to Drudge Report. Ailes was ousted from Fox News last summer after allegations surfaced that he had sexually harassed more than 20 women, including anchors Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly. The cable network rose to No. 1 and became a voice for the right wing on his watch. He advised Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Donald Trump in an informal capacity. |
Illinois' unpaid bills reach record $14.3 billion Posted: 17 May 2017 03:27 PM PDT Illinois' unpaid bill backlog has hit a record high of $14.3 billion as the legislature nears a May 31 budget deadline, the state comptroller's office said on Wednesday. The bill pile jumped from $13.3 billion after the governor's budget office this week reported more than $1 billion in liabilities held at state agencies, the comptroller said. Illinois is limping toward the June 30 end of its second straight fiscal year without a complete budget due to an impasse between Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the legislature. |

Working in the Tesla factory sounds like hell Posted: 18 May 2017 12:51 PM PDT Tesla is doing everything different to a regular car company, and making a lot of friends along the way. Not negotiating on price and selling direct to consumers has given Tesla a reputation for being fair and friendly, and made traditional car companies look increasingly out of date. But there's one other big difference: Tesla's workers aren't unionized, and from time to time, rumors surface about bad working conditions in the company's factories. A new report in the Guardian cites 15 former and current workers to paint a picture of a factory where everyone is stressed out, overworked, and potentially in real danger.
According to the report, Tesla has a "culture of long hours under intense pressure, sometimes through pain and injury, in order to fulfill the CEO's ambitious production goals." Fatigue seems to be the number-one problem, as workers described colleagues working for so long that they simply passed out. "I've seen people pass out, hit the floor like a pancake and smash their face open," a production technician said. It seems to be more than just anecdotal. Since 2014, over 100 ambulances have been called to Tesla's factory for a range of issues, including dizziness and exhaustion. Obviously, some of those ambulance calls would be for unrelated injuries or incidents that would happen at any workplace, but exhaustion and overwork just keep on popping up. Speaking of which: back in February, Tesla worker Jose Moran wrote a blog post arguing why Tesla employees should unionize. In the post, Moran said:
Sound familiar? The Guardian did speak to Elon Musk about the allegations. He acknowledged the long hours, but argues that Tesla is losing money so "This is not some situation where, for example, we are just greedy capitalists who decided to skimp on safety in order to have more profits and dividends and that kind of thing. It's just a question of how much money we lose. And how do we survive? How do we not die and have everyone lose their jobs." |
Donald Trump to announce $350bn arms deal with Saudi Arabia – one of the largest in history Posted: 17 May 2017 01:53 PM PDT Donald Trump will use his upcoming Saudi Arabia trip to announce one of the largest arms sales deals in US history - somewhere in the neighbouhood of $98bn to $128bn worth of arms. The White House said the president will propose it as a template for an alliance that will fight terrorism and keep Iran in check. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman began negotiations on this deal shortly after the 2016 US election when he sent a delegation to Trump Tower to meet with the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is serving as a senior advisor of sorts to Mr Trump. |

Rescue shelter posted an adoption listing for an 'utter bastard of a cat' Posted: 18 May 2017 08:49 AM PDT Be warned, this cat is not for the inexperienced or faint hearted. The Cat People of Melbourne are hoping someone will adopt an adorably evil looking cat named Lord Bigglesworth or Mr. Biggles, for short. SEE ALSO: Now you can lick your cat clean with this tongue-like accessory because of course In a hilarious post on petrescue.com, Mr. Biggles' "human slave" explained some of the cat's best features including "how to play with a dog and not kill it" and "rip shred tear - being firm with boundaries." The group warns not to be fooled by his "slinky shiny black fur and big yellow eyes" as he has a tendency to nip at unwanted advances and is prone to throw a "catty tantrum if he can't go outside when he wants to be let out." The introduction really says it all. "Mr Biggles (also known as Lord Bigglesworth) is an utter, utter, utter bastard." "You serve me, human."Image: pet rescue However, Mr. Biggles does have a softer side as he enjoys playing with kittens, snores a bit while sleeping, and cuddles with humans, but only on his terms. The group explains that Mr. Biggles needs an owner who doesn't take nipping personally but also won't let him get away by being a bad kitty. Look at those friendly eyes.Image: Pet rescueWe hope Mr. Biggles finds his human soulmate soon. WATCH: Watch dogs try cat toys for the first time |

Man freed from prison faces possible deportation to Cuba Posted: 18 May 2017 05:19 PM PDT DENVER (AP) — The detention of a Cuban immigrant set to rejoin his family after he was mistakenly released from prison, then put back, has raised questions about whether more people from the island nation will be deported from the United States now that relations between the two countries have thawed. |
The OnePlus 5 will be all about the camera Posted: 18 May 2017 04:12 PM PDT The OnePlus 5 will have a dual lens rear camera, most reports claim, which seems to indicate the young Chinese smartphone maker is looking to offer its fans a significant camera upgrade this year. The company on Thursday announced that it's indeed working on improving the photography performance of its phones starting with the OnePlus 5, without actually disclosing any specs for the unannounced phone.
The company wrote on its forum that it has partnered with DxO, the company behind the DxOMark photography benchmark, to improve its phones. "We're happy to announce that we have teamed up with DxO to enhance your photography experience with our upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 5," OnePlus said. "DxO is perhaps most well-known for creating the defining photography benchmark, the DxOMark. They've got years of imaging experience and expertise, both for professional cameras and for smartphones." "Working alongside DxO, we're confident the OnePlus 5 will be capable of capturing some of the clearest photos around," OnePlus also said. That's right: OnePlus used the OnePlus 5 a couple of times in its announcement. That might be a sign that a launch is imminent. The company did recently confirm that it plans to launch the phone this summer. Earlier this week, DxOMark updated its rankings with scores for the HTC U11 and the Galaxy S8, with the new HTC phone taking the top spot away from the Google Pixel. We'll just have to wait and see how well the OnePlus 5 will score in those tests — and I can't but wonder whether there will be any objectivity in them given that DxO will work on that camera experience. |
Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle claims to be in talks to replace Sean Spicer Posted: 17 May 2017 08:59 AM PDT A Fox News host is reportedly in discussions with the Trump administration about replacing Sean Spicer as White House Press Secretary. Kimberly Guilfoyle said she had been approached by a number of people in the Trump administration about replacing Mr Spicer who did not run his daily press briefings last week. Ms Guilfoyle, a TV personality who co-hosts The Five, said she thought it would be both a "fascinating" and "challenging" job which would require the input of someone who was both committed and concentrated. |
