Gab.com goes offline after Pittsburgh synagogue shooting Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:06 AM PDT (This story corrects paragraph four to show non-profit group helps all refugees, not only Jewish refugees) By Trevor Hunnicutt and Paresh Dave (Reuters) - Gab.com, the website where the suspected Pittsburgh synagogue gunman posted anti-Semitic views, said on Sunday it was offline for a period of time after being asked by its domain provider to move to another registrar. The move comes after GoDaddy Inc asked Gab to change the domain, while PayPal Holdings Inc , Stripe Inc and Joynet Inc blocked the website. "We have informed Gab.com that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another registrar," a spokesman for GoDaddy said, adding the site violated its terms of service and hosted content that "promotes and encourages violence against people." The 46-year-old suspect Robert Bowers in the shooting incident has been charged with murdering 11 people on Saturday in the deadliest attack ever on the Jewish community in the United States. |
Merkel to give up party leadership after poll setback Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:46 AM PDT Germany's Angela Merkel will not run for re-election as leader of her centre-right CDU, sources said Monday, in the clearest sign yet that the veteran chancellor is preparing her eventual exit after voters again punished her fragile coalition in a regional poll. Merkel, who has headed the CDU for 18 years, had until now always indicated that she believed the posts of party leader and chancellor should be held by the same person. "She will not stand again for the chairmanship of her party," a source within the Christian Democratic Union told AFP. |

US Military to send more than 5,000 troops to border ahead of migrant caravan arrival Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:28 AM PDT The US military is preparing to send as many as 5,200 troops to the nation's southern border ahead of a migrant caravan travelling towards the region. The latest reports arrived as an estimated 800 troops were sent to the US-Mexico border Monday, the US Department of Defence said Monday afternoon. Earlier this year around 2,000 National Guard troops to the region, where about 15,000 US customs officials oversee the processing of trade, migrants and pedestrian travel daily. |

In talks with Saudi minister, Mattis calls for transparent investigation in Khashoggi killing Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:50 AM PDT Washington Post columnist Khashoggi's murder has escalated into a crisis for the world's top oil exporter as Saudi Arabia's allies have reacted with outrage. Mattis said he met Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir during a conference in Bahrain on Saturday and discussed the killing. You know the same thing we talked about, the need for transparency, full and complete investigation," Mattis told a small group of reporters traveling to Prague with him. |
Catholic church split over abuse scandal gravity Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:43 AM PDT Pope Francis has vowed to end clerical sexual abuse, but bishops from Asia and Africa have shown a mixed response to a scandal some have termed a "Western problem". As the talks began, Francis warned again that abuse and cover ups would not be tolerated. Eamon Martin, the President of the Irish Episcopal Conference, said some churches were "in denial" and had not given the anti-paedophilia campaign "its proper place". |

Bolsonaro Gets Brazilian Oil Windfall With Output Poised to Soar Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:09 AM PDT After a decade of stagnant production, Brazil's offshore mega-projects are about to deliver a double whammy with exports set to surge and Brent prices comfortably above $70 a barrel. This means more revenue for a country beset with fiscal deficits, and more activity in a key industry, said Decio Oddone, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency. The oil turnaround gives the government more than just cash -- it promises to revive the fortunes of Petrobras, the much-maligned state-controlled state oil company that's a source of pride for many Brazilians but which has spent the past few years mired in scandal. |
Indonesian plane crashes into sea, all 189 on board feared dead Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:24 AM PDT An Indonesian airliner crashed into the sea on Monday, with the likely loss of all 189 people on board, as it tried to return to Jakarta minutes after take-off. Lion Air flight JT610, an almost new Boeing 737 MAX 8, was en route from the capital to Pangkal Pinang, centre of the Bangka-Belitung tin mining region. Indonesia is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, but its safety record is patchy. |

Chinese privately developed rocket fails to reach orbit Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:50 AM PDT A privately developed Chinese carrier rocket failed to reach orbit after lifting off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Saturday, in a blow to the country's nascent attempts by private companies to rival Elon Musk's SpaceX. "Before Zhuque carrier rocket was launched, its mission was already completed," the company said in the post on Saturday, without giving further details. Landspace was founded in 2015 and soon aimed to be the first Chinese private company to deliver a satellite into orbit. |

"If Mr. Assange wants to stay and he follows the rules ... he can stay at the embassy as long as he wants," said Attorney General Inigo Salvador, adding that Assange's stay had cost the country $6 million. Foreign Minister Jose Valencia declined to comment on Assange's assertion that Ecuador sought to hand him over to the United States. |

Elon Musk says tweet which cost him $20m was 'worth it' Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:12 AM PDT Elon Musk has said the tweet that cost him $20m (£15.5m) in fines by US Securities and Exchange Commissions was "worth it". Tesla's chief executive landed himself in hot water when he used the social media site to announce that he was thinking about taking the company private at $420 (£327) a share, adding that the "funding secured". The tweets, which were found to have no basis according to regulators, caused market fluctuation and as a result, the SEC charged Musk for "misleading investors". |

Inside a marquee set up on the grass, Meghan smiled as elder Barney Thomas addressed the couple in the Te Reo Maori language, wishing them "kia kaha", or strength, for the baby she is expecting next year. |
Brazil's Next President Will Get Investors' Verdict in Japan Posted: 28 Oct 2018 01:00 PM PDT An exchange-traded fund from Japan that follows Brazil's Ibovespa stock index will be the first security to watch when official results from the runoff ballot emerge, followed by a fund in Singapore that tracks a separate index of Brazilian equities. Brazil's top currency forecasters say there could be a short-lived rally if the outcome is confirmed, while some stock pickers see a massive rally ahead for the country. When European markets open, euro- and pound-denominated bonds issued by the government and big Brazilian companies could be an option for investors. |
Aussie cops to the roo-scue as kangaroo caught in surf Posted: 27 Oct 2018 11:00 PM PDT A kangaroo that hopped into the sea for a dip at a Melbourne beach had to be rescued by Australian police and brought back to life with CPR, officers said Sunday. Officers said they were called to Safety Beach in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon amid reports the native animal was struggling in the water. Medicare Reform Has No Constituency Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT If the polls and the experts are to be believed, House Republicans are set to lose their majority in next Tuesday's midterms. Despite having held the House of Representatives for six straight years, and 20 of the last 24, the GOP has mainly failed in its longstanding promise to reform our entitlement system, especially Medicare, whose long-term trajectory threatens the fiscal solvency of the federal government. Republicans could have, should have tried harder. |
Guy tries to shoo cat off his car, breaks windshield instead Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:18 PM PDT Viral Hog shared a video on Monday of a man attempting to shoo a cat off his car by kicking his windshield. Of course! Always the right way to go about something like this. Naturally, things did not go as planned. One kick wasn't quite enough to get the cat to move, so he gave the windshield another forceful kick, resulting in a sizable crack. "I was resting in the car when a cat approached the front windshield," the man — whose identity is concealed — told Viral Hog. "I wanted to scare him with my foot but apparently, I hit the glass way too hard and the glass broke." Probably best to just get out of the vehicle and shoo the cat in the future. Or better yet, just let the little fuzzball hang out if you're not in a rush to go anywhere. |
