Saudi, allies say committed to de-escalating Yemen conflict Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:39 PM PST Saudi Arabia and its allies said Monday they are committed to de-escalating hostilities in Yemen, only days after launching a renewed offensive on a port crucial for humanitarian aid. "The coalition is committed to de-escalating hostilities in Yemen and is strongly supportive of the UN envoy's political process," a source in the Saudi-led coalition told AFP on condition of anonymity. Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the conflict in 2015, aiming to bolster the standing of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi as he fought an insurgency by the Shiite Huthis from northern Yemen. |

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:30 AM PST Amid the gold and brown tree-lined streets of Tennessee, red dots begin to appear. Donald Trump is appearing at one of his last "Maga" rallies before the midterm elections in an attempt to cement what many polls have been calling a toss-up state. A tight Senate race in a usually red state makes Tennessee a key area for the president to give a last-minute campaign push if the Republicans are to keep control of congress this week. |

Indonesia jet had damaged airspeed indicator on last four flights: official Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:04 AM PST Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said on Monday an airspeed indicator of a Boeing Co. 737 MAX plane that crashed last week killing all 189 people on board was damaged for its last four flights. The damage was revealed after data had been downloaded from the plane's flight data recorder, KNKT chief Soerjanto Tjahjono told reporters, adding that it was asking Boeing and U.S. authorities what action to take to prevent similar problems on this type of plane around the world. "We are formulating, with NTSB and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator," he said, referring to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. |

Second Amazon headquarters a tale of two cities: report Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:12 PM PST Amazon is planning to split its coveted second headquarters between two US cities rather than pack it into a single urban setting, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The Journal cited an anonymous source as saying that Amazon decided that dividing its second headquarters between two locations would spread the economic benefits as well as burdens -- such as pressure on housing and transportation. Amazon also reportedly felt that a split would expand the pool of computer engineering talent available for jobs. |

Everything you need to know to vote in the midterm elections Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:31 AM PST This is You Won't Regret It , a new weekly column featuring recommendations, tips, and unsolicited advice from the Mashable culture team. Doing anything special on Tuesday, November 6, 2018? If you live in the United States and are registered to vote, you absolutely should have plans. Why? Because it's Election Day. In case you haven't been watching the news, following the dozens of campaigns across the nation, listening to celebrities and activists call for action, or keeping up with politics these last few months — this election's a big deal. A huge deal, in fact. And if you're able to cast a ballot in the midterms and haven't voted early or absentee, Tuesday is your last day to step up. SEE ALSO: How to follow the 2018 midterms without losing your sanity While midterm elections might not sound as important or high-stakes as presidential elections do, they still matter immensely and every vote has the power to make a difference. This year especially — with 410 women, people of color, and LGBT candidates running — local and state election outcomes have the chance to make history, which is one of the many reasons you should put forth the effort to cast a ballot. President Barack Obama already attempted to shut down seven popular excuses people make for not voting, but if you're still hesitant, we're here to help make the voting process as simple as possible. Not sure if you're registered? We've got you. First things first — if you want to vote, you have to make sure you're registered. A simple way to check is by visiting Vote.org's "Are You Registered to Vote?" page. You can also check your registration status using Rock The Vote's website. If you're not registered to vote by Election Day, there's still hope. While you may have missed your state's deadline to take part in the midterms, 15 states (outlined in the ACLU tweet below) and the District of Columbia allow voters to register on Election Day. So be sure to research your state's individual registration policies for more information. FYI to:California,Colorado,Connecticut,Hawaii,D.C.Idaho,Illinois,Iowa,Maine,Minnesota,Montana,New Hampshire,Utah,Vermont, and Wisconsin,You can register to vote on Election Day. https://t.co/Xnf50bOAe3 pic.twitter.com/Sh9JHfIkic — ACLU (@ACLU) November 3, 2018 You can find a full list of voter registration deadlines here, and you can register online in some cases by selecting your individual state. Need to find your polling place? No problem. If you really want to vote but aren't sure where to go to cast your ballot, Vote.org also offers a nifty polling place locator. Simply enter your address and the site will reveal your designated polling place, the hours during which you can vote, and even offer you directions. A breeze! How can I get to the polls? Okay. Registration? Check! Polling place? Check! We're looking good, but are you set with a ride? A major reason people opt out of voting on Election Day is a lack of transportation to the polls. Don't let that stop you on Tuesday. If you find yourself in need of transportation on Nov. 6, BuzzFeed will team up with Lyft to offer 50 percent off all rides to the polls. Uber will offer a "Get to the Polls" button on its app. There are also Election Day scooter and bike deals. You can also visit CarpoolVote.com — a site that connects those in need of rides to the polls or voter registration offices with volunteer drivers. Voting on Election Day can also prove to be a challenge for people with disabilities. As we noted in an earlier piece, any voter can contact their local election offices and officials to inquire about accessibility at polling places. Additionally, those who experience problems voting are encouraged to call 866-OUR-VOTE for assistance or visit 866ourvote.org — the website for a nonpartisan Election Protection coalition working to ensure every person's vote counts. Get informed on candidates Perhaps you're hesitant to vote because you feel uninformed about the candidates running for office in your area. If that's the case, RockTheVote.org and Vote.org have comprehensive candidate guides to read through, and the ACLU has a tool to help you determine which candidates running for office best align with your beliefs. Inputting your address the ACLU's voter site will also show you key issues and races on your ballot. How Close Is the Battle for the House? This Close. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:30 AM PST If you do that, you find the balance of power in the House of Representatives is really close — probably within a handful of seats. Better to begin by looking at too many districts than too few — and they selected 80 seats. Why do the Republicans have so few districts where they could win a Democrat-held seat? |

Prince Charles acknowledges UK role in horror of slave trade Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:21 AM PST "At Osu Castle on Saturday, it was especially important to me – as indeed it was on my first visit there forty-one years ago – that I should acknowledge the most painful chapter of Ghana's relations with the nations of Europe, including the United Kingdom," Charles said. "The appalling atrocity of the slave trade, and the unimaginable suffering it caused, left an indelible stain on the history of our world." Britain abolished the trans-Atlantic slave trade in 1807 although the full abolition of slavery did not follow for another generation. Two days ago the prince visited Christiansborg Castle in Osu which originally operated as a Danish slave trade fort and from where it is estimated more than 1.5 million Africans were traded. |
California teacher caught on camera in brawl with student Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:37 PM PST A California high school teacher is facing charges for punching a pupil who had hurled racial slurs at him, in an incident that many students and staff say was justified. Music teacher Marston Riley, 64, is seen in video footage confronting a 14-year-old student for not wearing the proper uniform. Students told the local KTLA news station that the teen refused to leave the classroom as instructed and began shouting profanity and the N-word at Riley, who is black. |
