Voters weigh pot legalization, minimum wage hikes Posted: 04 Nov 2014 02:07 PM PST While many pollsters are predicting Tuesday will be a big night for Republicans, many of the most high-profile ballot initiatives voters will consider are decidedly liberal. Among the 146 ballot proposals and initiatives voters in 41 states will consider Tuesday are a handful that would legalize marijuana and raise the minimum wage. |

Republicans strike early blow in midterm election results Posted: 04 Nov 2014 04:34 PM PST By Steve Holland and Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans struck a powerful first blow in Kentucky in U.S. congressional elections on Tuesday in their drive to control the U.S. Senate and dramatically tip the balance of power away from President Barack Obama and his Democrats. Obama's low job approval rating, partisan gridlock in Washington and a U.S. economy that is not growing broadly enough to help many in the middle class were major issues confronting voters in elections for 36 senators, 36 state governors and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. ... |
Kansas ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional: judge Posted: 04 Nov 2014 03:31 PM PST KANSAS CITY Kan. (Reuters) - Same-sex couples may soon be able to marry in Kansas following a federal judge's ruling on Tuesday that the state's ban on same-sex marriage violates the U.S. Constitution. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Crabtree granted a preliminary injunction stopping Kansas from enforcing its ban on gay marriage and put the ruling on hold until Nov. 11 to give Kansas an opportunity to appeal. The decision, if upheld, would add to more than a dozen states where same-sex marriage has become legal since the U.S. Supreme Court said on Oct. 6 that it would not review recent U.S. ... |

6 most aggressive GOP attempts to tie Obama to Dem candidates Posted: 04 Nov 2014 01:26 AM PST Republicans trying to take back the Senate and expand their advantage in the House have rallied over the past year around a common strategy: tie Democrats to President Barack Obama — at any cost and for any reason. Candidates, parties and independent groups spent hundreds of millions to try to convince voters that Democrats on ballots all over the country not only think like Obama but are basically him, in miniature. The reason for this effort is obvious: nationally, the president has a 42 percent approval rating, and in many of the more conservative states where embattled Democrats are fighting to keep their jobs, his favorability is even lower. |
