Trump Is On The Verge Of Politicizing The Census, Advocates Say Posted: 22 Nov 2017 09:05 AM PST President Donald Trump is reportedly leaning toward tapping an academic for the No. 2 position at the U.S. Census Bureau, a decision that has alarmed advocates who say the pick lacks adequate management experience for a massive operational role and has political views that would undermine the credibility of the agency. |

Elite Royal Navy rescue team sent as possible calls detected from missing Argentine submarine Posted: 22 Nov 2017 03:33 AM PST The Royal Navy has deployed its elite submarine rescue team to join the search for a missing Argentine submarine, after failed satellite calls thought to be from the vessel raised hopes the crew were still alive. HMS Protector also began scouring the South Atlantic as part of the international hunt for the missing vessel, and HMS Clyde was being diverted from South Georgia. Argentine officials said naval bases had detected seven incomplete satellite calls over the weekend attributed to the sub and were now trying to use them to pinpoint its location. The communication attempts "indicate that the crew is trying to re-establish contact, so we are working to locate the source of the emissions," the Argentine Navy said on its Twitter account, adding that the calls lasted between four and 36 seconds. An international team of ships and aircraft were braving heavy seas and high winds to search for the German-built ARA San Juan which has been lost since last week. Argentine navy loses contact with submarine carrying 44 01:08 The Royal Navy said it was flying the Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG) to the region to join the hunt. The highly trained team of medics, engineers and escape specialists is continuously on six hours notice to go anywhere in the world. Team members are parachute trained so that they can leap into the water at the scene if needed, but in this case will embark on HMS Protector. They carry inflatable boats and life rafts, medical equipment and communications gear which allows them to talk to trapped crews. Arrived on task in the search area in the early hours of this morning and have commenced sonar and visual search for #ARASanJuan as part of the ongoing multinational operation. Conditions remain challenging given current weather. pic.twitter.com/Sxgi9MZGo5— HMS_Protector (@protector_hms) November 19, 2017 The San Juan and its 44 crew last made contact on Wednesday when she was 267 miles off the coast in the Gulf of San Jorge. The latest possible calls were a sign for "cautious enthusiasm", naval experts said, showing the crew may be alive, afloat and at a shallow enough depth to attempt to communicate. HMS Protector has begun sonar scans to hunt for the submarine Credit: MOD Claudio Rodriguez, whose brother Hernan is aboard the submarine, told a local television channel: "They've got to be afloat. Thank God. That gives us hope, because we knew that if they were down below, they would be screwed." HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's 5,000 ton ice patrol and survey ship, was diverted to join the search from a routine mission in the area and can bring its high definition sonar to bear on the search. Search and rescue mission for Argentinian submarine The hunt also includes help from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and the United States. America on Sunday said it was sending a second P-8 Poseidon submarine hunting navy patrol plane to join the search. The US Navy has also dispatched two submarine rescue chambers that can dock onto stricken boats and ferry crew to the surface from hundreds of feet underwater. Yemen port, airport to reopen to aid: Saudi-led coalition Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:51 PM PST The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said Wednesday it would reopen a key Red Sea port and Sanaa airport to aid, after a more than two-week blockade following a missile attack on Riyadh. The coalition said it would reopen Hodeida port to receive "urgent humanitarian and relief materials" and Sanaa airport to UN aircraft from midday on Thursday (0900 GMT). Hodeida, which is controlled by Huthi rebels backed by Saudi Arabia's arch-rival Iran, is a key conduit for much-needed food and medicine imports to Yemen. |

This real-time Black Friday tracker shows just how much we shop online Posted: 23 Nov 2017 04:10 AM PST Shopping season is upon us — even if Thanksgiving is just getting started. To really see how much everyone's dropping on deals, online shopping platform Shopify has a real-time dashboard showing how much and what (and from where) people are buying online. SEE ALSO: Black Friday 2017 deals from all over the internet, compiled just for you in one handy spreadsheet With over 500,000 online merchants, Shopify's dashboard this year will track shopping habits as the purchases happen. Based on feedback from last year's visualizer, the company is including more data about shopping trends. They'll show what categories are most popular, like fashion and apparel, health and beauty products, and toys and electronics. You'll also be able to see the size and scale of Black Friday-Cyber Monday shopping with reports on numbers of orders and dollars spent — down to the minute. Black Friday is of course a big retail "holiday" in brick-and-mortar stores. Then after a weekend of shopping, Cyber Monday has blown up as its own "holiday" for all the online deals and tech purchases. Now the lines have blurred and it's turned into a massive post-Thanksgiving consumer extravaganza. "It is all one event," Shopify VP of product Satish Kanwar said in an interview. "It's not as black and white. It's kind of a singular marathon that's happening." The shopping marathon brought in $555,716 in a single minute to Shopify merchants last year. Overall, consumer spending hit $3.45 billion on Cyber Monday last year, according to Shopify. This year is set to be even bigger — which seems nuts. "We're expecting the [shopping] season to be larger," Kanwar said. He said sales are starting earlier and countries outside of the U.S. are getting in on the discounts. More people are shopping from their phones, as well, he said. Shopify's Kanwar called all the shopping excitement this weekend the "Super Bowl of commerce." He's hoping to get a new winter wardrobe and a Nintendo Switch.A holiday shopping survey from WalletHub found that the most wanted gifts this year were gift cards, clothes and electronics. Better remember to stretch before whipping out that credit card. WATCH: KFC made a $10,000 pod to help you escape the holiday internet chaos |

Zimbabwe president-in-waiting Emmerson Mnangagwa returns from exile Posted: 22 Nov 2017 10:08 AM PST The former Zimbabwean vice president who rode to power on the back of the soft military coup that ousted Robert Mugabe pledged to rebuild the country's economy as he mounted a triumphant return to the country. Emmerson Mnangagwa, who fled Zimbabwe two weeks ago amid a bitter power struggle inside the country's ruling party, landed at Harare's Manyame airbase on Wednesday afternoon 24 hours after Mr Mugabe was forced to step down. "I appeal to all genuine people of Zimbabwe to come together," Mr Mnangagwa told supporters gathered outside the Harare headquarters of Zanu-PF. "We are all Zimbabweans ... we need peace in our country and jobs, jobs, jobs." "He is now the former president of Zimbabwe," he said of Mr Mugabe, to loud cheers. Mr Mnangagwa praised the military, the speaker of parliament, and other party leaders for their support and revealed he had been in "constant contact" with the generals throughout the coup that resulted in Mr Mugabe resigning on Tuesday night. Emmerson Mnangagwa greets supporters gathered outside the Zanu-PF party headquarters in Harare on Wednesday Credit: Ben Curtis/AP The 75-year-old Zanu-PF grandee, who is nicknamed "The Crocodile," fled to Mozambique and then South Africa after Mr Mugabe fired him as vice president and kicked him out of the party on November 6. The move prompted Mr Mnangagwa's allies in the Zimbabwean army to mount a military coup to force Mr Mugabe to step down and arrest allies of his wife, Grace Mugabe, who was making her own bid for power. Mr Mugabe resigned on Tuesday afternoon after Zimbabwe's parliament prepared to launch impeachment proceedings against him. Mr Mnangagwa was elected head of Zanu-PF on Saturday and will be sworn in as the party's choice to complete Mr Mugabe's term as president on Friday. Lovemore Matuke, the party's chief whip, said the inauguration would take place in Harare's 60,000 seat National Sports Stadium on Friday morning. Zimbabweans celebrate in the morning sun after President Mugabe resigned in Harare Credit: MIKE HUTCHINGS/ REUTERS But he will face intense pressure from the public and the international community to fix Zimbabwe's dysfunctional economy and to do away with the excesses that came to mark Mr Mugabe's rule. "I want Ngwenya [the crocodile] to help change the constitution so that no one above 75 years will stand for public office again and all ministers must have a retirement age, just like all the civil servants" said Isaac Chamboko, a shoe vendor in the southern part of the city. The Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe's main opposition party, has called for assurances that the next year's presidential elections will be free and fair amid fears that Mr Mnangagwa will retain the mechanism of authoritarian control he helped Mr Mugabe build. Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the MDC, warned ahead of Mr Mugabe's resignation on Tuesday that a "democratic Zimbabwe cannot be built by another un-democratic process". Timeline Robert Mugabe as leader of Zimbabwe Regional powers endorsed the change of guard in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, with Jacob Zuma, the president of South Africa, holding a meeting with Mr Mnangagwa before he boarded his plane to Harare. The African Union said it recognized the "Zimbabwean people have expressed their will," but praised Mr Mugabe for a "lifetime of service to the Zimbabwean nation" rather than criticize him for misrule. "President Mugabe will be remembered as a fearless pan-Africanist liberation fighter, and the father of the independent Zimbabwean nation. Today's decision will go down in history as an act of statesmanship that can only bolster President Mugabe's political legacy," Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairman of the Commission of the African Union, said in a statement. Celebrations as Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe resigns 01:27 China, which emerged as a major investor in Zimbabwe during Mr Mugabe's authoritarian rule, said it respected Mr Mugabe's decision to step down and would continue "friendly" relations with the country. "China respects Mr. Mugabe's decision to resign, and he is still a good friend of the Chinese people," Lu Kang, a foreign ministry spokesman, said. Beijing avoided taking sides during the past week's political crisis in Zimbabwe. General Constantino Chiwenga, the head of the Zimbabwean armed forces and the architect of the coup that brought down Mr Mugabe, visited China shortly before the coup. |

Hariri says resignation on hold, pledges to stay in Lebanon Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:02 AM PST Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri said Wednesday he was suspending his surprise resignation, pending talks, providing a potential way out of a political crisis that has rocked the country. Lebanon has been thrown into turmoil by Hariri's shock November 4 announcement from Saudi Arabia that he was stepping down, as well as his prolonged absence afterwards. The resignation was seen as a ratcheting up of tensions in the long-running rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and raised fears that Lebanon would be paralysed by regional tensions. |

The future looks bright: light pollution rises on a global scale Posted: 22 Nov 2017 12:40 PM PST Researchers said on Wednesday satellite data showed that Earth's artificially lit outdoor surface at night grew by about 2 percent annually in brightness and area from 2012 to 2016, underscoring concerns about the ecological effects of light pollution on people and animals. The rate of growth observed in developing countries was much faster than in already brightly lit rich countries. The researchers said the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather satellite data may understate the situation because its sensor cannot detect some of the LED lighting that is becoming more widespread, specifically blue light. |

Putin urges 'compromise' ahead of new Syria peace talks Posted: 22 Nov 2017 01:40 PM PST Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that efforts to end Syria's six-year war were entering "a new stage" ahead of a planned meeting of Syrian government officials and opposition leaders, warning both sides that compromise would be necessary. The new talks should happen soon, Putin said after a summit with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, insisting that they would reinvigorate a hobbled peace process. "It is obvious that the reform process will not be simple, it will require compromise and concessions from all parties, including obviously the Syrian government," Putin said after two hours of talks with Rouhani and Erdogan in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. |

Thanksgiving getaway nightmare as cars left stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic Posted: 22 Nov 2017 03:32 AM PST America's great Thanksgiving getaway is already under way and it began for some unlucky motorists with an enormous traffic jam. ABC News shared incredible aerial footage of "bumper-to-bumper traffic" in Los Angeles on the 405 motorway, one of the busiest and most congested routes in the United States. More than 50 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the Thanksgiving holiday, which kicked off with Donald Trump pardoning a turkey. "A strong economy and labour market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fuelling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season." Thousands have shared ABC's clip of the red and white traffic crawling slowly along the 405, two days before families sit down to celebrate the national holiday. Traffic comes to a near standstill on the 405 in southern California each year in the days before Thanksgiving, prompting a strong reaction on social media. "My worst day ever was on the 405 the night before Thanksgiving. Took me over three hours to get from Marina Del Rey to Sherman Oaks; 17 total miles," commented one. One local, who is familiar with the nightmarish traffic, posted: "Seriously. This is my life everyday here in LA." Another previously compared the footage to "red and white blood cells flowing through the major arteries of the city", adding: "Pretty, wouldn't want to be in it." Mnangagwa: Zimbabwe's 'Crocodile' to snap up the top job Posted: 23 Nov 2017 01:26 AM PST Nicknamed "the Crocodile" for his ruthlessness, Emmerson Mnangagwa who will take over as Zimbabwe's next president, is a hardliner with ties to the military who could prove as authoritarian as his mentor Robert Mugabe. It was his political ambition to take over which set off a bitter succession battle between him and Grace, the president's 52-year-old wife, triggering the crisis that toppled the autocrat, who resigned on Tuesday. When Mnangagwa was dismissed as vice president by Mugabe on November 6, it initially looked like he'd been outfoxed by the first lady, forcing him to flee the country. |
