Thousands march in Paris after Chinese man's death by police Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:46 PM PDT About 6,000 people took part in angry protests in Paris on Sunday against the death of a Chinese man shot and killed when police responded to a call at his apartment last month, police said. The rally was organised by several Chinese associations in France, and as with previous rallies held over the past week, there were sporadic skirmishes between protesters and security forces. Some of the demonstrators threw bottles, eggs and fruit, prompting the police to respond with tear gas during clashes that lasted more than an hour, according to an AFP photographer. |
Trump insists GOP talks on replacing Obamacare are ongoing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 08:12 AM PDT A little more than a week after telling reporters he was moving on after failing to rally enough Republican support to repeal and replace Obamacare — and vowing to let former President Barack Obama's health care law "explode" — President Trump lashed out at the "fake news media" for casting the negotiations as dead. "Anybody (especially Fake News media) who thinks that Repeal & Replace of ObamaCare is dead does not know the love and strength in R Party!" Trump tweeted on Sunday. |

The "Al Kausar" is the third vessel to be hijacked in less than a month off the coast of Somalia as experts warn that ships have lowered their guard in the five years since the height of the piracy crisis. The Indian cargo ship was carrying items such as wheat and sugar from Dubai via Yemen to Somalia's Bossaso port when it came under attack, owner Isaak Them told AFP. |

China to create new economic zone outside Beijing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 04:07 AM PDT China will create a new special economic zone outside Beijing similar to those established in Shenzhen and Shanghai, the government said, in a bid to boost flagging growth and reduce the strain on the capital. The Xiongan New Area, located some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of downtown Beijing in Hebei province, will rival south China's Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, established in the 1980s, and Shanghai's Pudong New Area, set up in the 1990s. The move was a "major historic and strategic choice made by the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core" and would be "crucial for millennium to come", the official Xinhua news agency reported late Saturday. |

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. Assange taunts Ecuador opponent after election Posted: 02 Apr 2017 09:17 PM PDT WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange waded into Ecuador's contested presidential election, tweeting his congratulations to the ruling socialist party's candidate and telling his rival he should leave the country. Assange, who has been holed up in Ecuador's London embassy since 2012, had a personal stake in the race: opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso had threatened to kick him out of the embassy within 30 days if he won the election. The 45-year-old Australian buoyantly turned that threat around on Lasso as official results showed the conservative ex-banker on track to lose. |

Russia looms over French election Posted: 02 Apr 2017 09:19 AM PDT Russia looms large over France's presidential election, with candidates on the hard left, right and far right all promising to improve ties with the Kremlin, accused by some of meddling in the vote. As US authorities press their investigation into alleged Russian interference in favour of Donald Trump in America's election, officials on both sides of the Atlantic are warning of possible attempts by Russia to also sway the French vote. This week, the chairman of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence outright accused Russia of an "overt effort" to disrupt France's April 23-May 7 vote. |

Tina Fey has a message for all the college-educated white women that voted Posted: 02 Apr 2017 11:20 AM PDT Tina Fey isn't one to mince words—and she had some very important things to say on Friday night. The comedian took part in the American Civil Liberties (ACLU) Facebook Live telethon, fundraising alongside Amy Poehler, Tom Hanks, and more for the organization. During the nearly four-hour-long broadcast, Fey took the opportunity to speak to Donald Trump supporters—and specifically, to the college-educated white women voters among them. SEE ALSO: Like Tina Fey? And the ACLU? Do we have the livestream for you. "A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV," the actress said during an interview with Donna Lieberman and Louise Melling of the ACLU. "I would want to urge them to, like — you can't look away because it doesn't affect you this minute, but it's going to affect you eventually." Fey is referring to exit poll numbers from November's election that show Donald Trump's voters were predominantly white female voters in the country— 53 percent to be exact. "I personally would like to make my own pledge to college-educated white women to not look away, not pretend that things that are happening now won't eventually affect me if we don't put a stop to it," she explained. Tulsa cop facing trial for killing black man says race not a factor Posted: 02 Apr 2017 10:19 PM PDT In an unusual appearance on CBS News' "60 Minutes" on Sunday, officer Betty Shelby insisted her actions, captured on videotape, were driven entirely by the behavior of the man she shot, Terence Crutcher. Although the footage showed Crutcher, 40, had his hands in the air as he stood beside his car in a roadway just before Shelby shot him, she said the video fails to show clearly that he suddenly reached into the vehicle in what she believed was an attempt to grab a weapon. It was that move, and his repeated failure to heed her commands, that led Shelby, 42, to use lethal force. |

Fox News, Ailes face another sexual harassment lawsuit Posted: 03 Apr 2017 03:57 PM PDT A Democratic political consultant and Fox News contributor on Monday sued the network and its former chairman, Roger Ailes, accusing them of denying her a permanent hosting job after she rebuffed Ailes' sexual advances. Julie Roginsky also said in her lawsuit filed in New York state court that a misogynistic culture at Fox News, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc , had not changed since Ailes resigned last year after a separate sexual harassment lawsuit by former anchor Gretchen Carlson. Susan Estrich, a lawyer for Ailes, said in a statement that Roginsky's claims were "total hogwash." "This is about someone who wants to pile-on in a massive character assassination in order to achieve what she did not accomplish on the merits," Estrich said. |
