A single genetic glitch may explain how Zika became so dangerous Posted: 28 Sep 2017 11:44 AM PDT By Julie Steenhuysen CHICAGO (Reuters) - A single genetic change that occurred in 2013 may explain how Zika acquired the ability to attack fetal nerve cells, causing a severe birth defect in babies whose mothers were infected while pregnant, Chinese and U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. Scientists have posited many theories about why Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that had been linked with only mild symptoms since its discovery in 1947, could suddenly be associated with thousands of cases of the birth defect known as microcephaly, as it was in Brazil in 2015. |

The last thing comet probe Rosetta saw Posted: 28 Sep 2017 10:34 AM PDT Robotic comet explorer Rosetta sent home a last-gasp photo of her target's rocky facade before crashing into its surface to end a 12-year deep-space odyssey, ground controllers said Thursday. Almost a year to the day since Rosetta's demise on September 30 last year, the European Space Agency (ESA) issued the fuzzy image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, pieced together from the final bursts of data relayed by the orbiter. The image of a one-square-metre (3.3 foot by 3.3 foot) section of comet presumed to be Rosetta's boulder-strewn, dusty resting place, was taken from a distance of about 20 metres. |

China says will protect sovereignty from any conflict on Korean peninsula Posted: 28 Sep 2017 01:30 AM PDT BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Chinese military will make all necessary preparations to protect national sovereignty and regional peace and stability, when asked about the risk of conflict on the Korean peninsula. Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian made the comments at a monthly briefing in Beijing when asked what preparations China was making in case a war breaks out. Iran may drop nuclear deal if U.S. withdraws, foreign minister tells al Jazeera Posted: 28 Sep 2017 11:25 AM PDT Iran may abandon the nuclear deal it reached with six major powers if the United States decides to withdraw from it, Iranian foreign minister told Qatar's al Jazeera TV in New York. U.S. President Donald Trump has called the 2015 deal an "embarrassment". The deal is supported by the other major powers that negotiated it with Iran and its collapse could trigger a regional arms race and worsen tensions in the Middle East. |

School says it will ban student athletes from playing if they take a knee during national anthem Posted: 28 Sep 2017 12:34 PM PDT A Louisiana high school is ordering student athletes to stand during the national anthem, echoing Donald Trump's calls to prohibit athletes from standing or kneeling in protest. In a letter to students and parents, Parkway High School Principal Waylon Bates said that the school "requires student athletes to stand in a respectful manner" and warned students who don't bend to the rule would be punished with a loss of playing time or "removal from the team". By mandating athletes rise for the anthem, Mr Bates thrust his high school into a national furor provoked by Mr Trump's comments. |
