Posted: 18 Mar 2019 11:23 AM PDT Dutch police have arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of shooting three people dead and wounding five others in a possible terror attack on a tram. The Turkish-born suspect, Gökmen Tanis, was on the run since Monday morning, forcing vast parts of Utrecht city – including mosques, schools and businesses – into lockdown. Although the local terror threat level was set to a maximum of five, as the day progressed increasing evidence on social and international media suggested the attack could have been personally motivated. During the eight-hour manhunt, residents were advised to stay indoors and police were sent to secure mosques across the Netherlands. In an unusual move, police had named and released photographs of Mr Tanis, a local resident born in Turkey, who is thought to have unleashed a volley of shots on a tram in a quiet, residential area before fleeing in a stolen, red Renault Clio. Police named Tanis as someone they wanted to speak to following the shooting Local chief public prosecutor Rutger Jeuken said that early indications suggested a terror attack. "The first interpretation of what happened according to witness statements and the evidence we have found suggest a terrorist motive, although we cannot rule out other motives," he said in a press conference in the evening. But the police acknowledged in a Twitter feed of press releases that other reports in Dutch and Turkish media suggested that there might have been personal motives, possibly targeting a woman who could have been a step-sister or ex-partner. Mr Tanis had reportedly been sentenced for an attempted killing in 2013 after he fired shots towards an apartment building. Armed police were scrambled to a manhunt in Utrecht after three people were killed in the attack Credit: BPC/WENN He was in court two weeks ago accused of a rape in 2017, and had previously been arrested for attempted vehicle theft, driving under the influence of intoxicants and spitting at police. Mark Rutte, the prime minister, said in a press conference that all flags on government buildings would hang at half-mast tomorrow: "It is still unclear what the motive behind the attack was: terrorist or otherwise, we don't know and we can't exclude anything. "[Whatever the] motive, three people have died and three are fighting for their lives. The whole world is feeling this, and we should not think of this as less than it is." The shooting took place at the 24 Oktoberplein area, and eye-witnesses said that after shouts of "shooter", people fled from the tram. The area was quickly shut off by police, three trauma helicopters were called, and armed police and anti-terror forces flooded the streets. Greet Oldenlam, 65, said that she saw paramedics carry a body covered with a bloodstained sheet from the tram. "I can't believe this happened in my city," she said. "[It] seems like nowhere is safe now. Those poor people attacked in the tram on a quiet Monday." Utrecht tram shooting - locator map A witness on the tram, Daan Molenaar, told Dutch broadcaster NOS: "I saw someone lying behind the tram and thought she had been ridden over. "People came out of cars running towards her. Then a shooter came running with a pistol up, and heard people shouting 'shooter!' I ran." As schools and businesses closed their doors, inhabitants stood outside their homes, looking up dumbfounded as helicopters and drones flew over the area. In a press conference on Monday evening, police announced that a second suspect had also been arrested during the day. "Today is a black day for our city," said mayor Van Zanen. |

U.S.-backed force says it has taken positions in Islamic State Syria camp Posted: 18 Mar 2019 03:54 PM PDT U.S.-backed fighters said they had taken positions in Islamic State's last enclave in eastern Syria and air strikes pounded the tiny patch of land beside the Euphrates River early on Monday, a Reuters journalist said. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia said in an update on Monday that tens of militants had been killed during what it called fierce clashes, and one SDF fighter had been injured. It said Islamic State had sent four suicide bombers to points close to SDF fighters. |

Saudi crown prince approved 'intervention' against dissidents: report Posted: 17 Mar 2019 07:28 PM PDT More than a year before the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved a secret campaign to silence dissenters, The New York Times reported on Sunday. American officials referred to it as the Saudi Rapid Intervention Group, the Times said. At least some of the clandestine missions were carried out by members of the team that killed and dismembered Khashoggi in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, suggesting his murder was part of a wider campaign against dissidents, the report said, citing the US officials and associates of some Saudi victims. |

Beto O'Rourke raises $6 million in first 24 hours of campaign as Republicans crank up attacks Posted: 18 Mar 2019 04:25 AM PDT Word travels fast through the corn fields of Iowa - and the word among Democrats is that Beto O'Rourke could be the real thing. After launching his White House bid last week the Texan, light on policy but long on charm, has beguiled and dazzled voters at cafes, bars, and other small venues across the state, which is the first to vote in the 2020 primaries. "He's Obamaish," said Jenny Turner, 38, a Republican voter who stopped in at an O'Rourke event to see what all the fuss was about. "I saw every Republican candidate in 2016 and this guy's better than all of them," she said. "He's something else, more likeable. He looked me straight in the eye and he really connected. Yes, he can win." On Monday it was revealed that the O'Rourke campaign raised $6.1 million in the first 24 hours after his announcement, outstripping all other Democrat candidates. Reactions like that are why Republican operatives in Iowa have Mr O'Rourke at the top of their list to be torpedoed early. Anti-O'Rourke TV adverts, the first against a 2020 Democrat contender, have already launched. The Republican answer to the "Beto problem" is an unexpected one. Rather than painting the skateboarding former punk rock guitarist, as a dangerous radical, the adverts instead describe him as a man "dripping in white male privilege". The 2020 presidential candidate gesticulates enthusiastically as he speaks to a crowd in Iowa Credit: Reuters He is from a "blue blood pedigree," educated at a private boarding school, and his father-in-law, a billionaire property developer, "bought" him a seat in Congress, it is claimed. When he fled the scene of a drunk-driving crash, he got away with it because he was white and rich. The allegations, which will dog Mr O'Rourke, 46, for the next year, are aimed at driving a wedge between the candidate and the liberal primary voters he will need to win the Democrat nomination. For Republicans there is a sense of urgency because if Mr O'Rourke becomes the Democrat nominee, then his native Texas, the biggest Republican state, could turn blue for the first time in decades. Without Texas, Donald Trump almost certainly cannot win re-election. There is substance to this Republican depiction of Mr O'Rourke. He is far from the left-wing firebrand some might have expected. During six years in Congress his voting record put him in the most moderate 25 per cent of Democrats. With socialism all the rage in progressive circles he proudly declares himself a capitalist, and he has been evasive on committing to a government-run healthcare system. Those are positions that went down well in the tiny Iowa town of Washington, where a "Make America Great Again" banner welcomes visitors in the main square. Voters in the area went for Mr Trump by 20 points over Hillary Clinton in 2016. Speaking in a tiny art gallery, surrounded by paintings of corn fields, Mr O'Rourke delcared himself a "unifier" who could work with both parties. In a hyperbolic, and sometimes contradictory, speech he vowed to save the world from climate change, while also empathising with business owners. O'Rourke stands on a pick-up truck to speak to an audience of 200 on his plans for healthcare and education Credit: Xinhua/Barcroft Images He hailed US victory in the Second World War, and called for it to "reassert global leadership," but also admitted to having voted against more funding for the military when he was a congressman. Then he misquoted Sir Winston Churchill. It didn't matter, his audience applauded anyway. All the while Mr O'Rourke bobbed up and down on his toes, accepting questions by saying "Right on, right on" and flashing what some have described as his "Kennedy smile". Mr O'Rourke is one of the most gesticulative politicians ever to take to the stump. When he talks his hands flail around wildly. On occasion he resembles a human windmill. If he gets particularly enthused - which is often - he raises an arm and appears to dunk an imaginary basketball. Whatever he says, he is difficult not to watch. While he was talking, and gesticulating, in Washington the first real scandal of his candidacy emerged. The Reuters news agency reported that he had once been part of a notorious computer hacking group called the "Cult of the Dead Cow". Speaking outside the art gallery, in the deserted, windswept town square, Mr O'Rourke admitted it was true. He told The Telegraph: "Yeah, stuff I was part of as a teenager is not anything that I'm proud of today, that's the long and short of it. It was something I was a part of in El Paso a long, long time ago." O'Rourke told the Telegraph he was 'not proud' of his days in a hackers collective as a young man Credit: AFP Could it hurt him with centrist voters? "It could," he admitted, nodding. "I can't control anything that I've done in the past, only what I do going forward. What I plan to do is give this my best. I will work with everything I've got. It's going to be largest grassroots campaign this country has ever seen." Given his position towards the right of the party Mr O'Rourke may end up competing for the same moderate Democrat primary voters as Joe Biden. The Texan said he thought "very highly" of Mr Biden, but believes he would do a better job in the White House. "I do absolutely, yeah," he said. "I've got a history of running a (internet software) business, meeting a payroll week in week out, working in Congress across the aisle." Asked if he thought Mr Trump should be impeached, he was more forthright than other Democrats. He said: "You're asking me has the president committed impeachable offences? Yes. Period." Mr O'Rourke's foreign policy agenda has yet to be fleshed out. When asked about Brexit the candidate said he had "no position" but appeared to oppose it. He told the Telegraph: "I think it's in the world's interest to strengthen our alliances and our partnerships. "I think the more breakups we see the more isolations we face and the harder it's going to be for us to face our common challenges." He dismissed suggestions that his policies lack detail, saying part of the purpose of the campaign was to listen to citizens and hear their ideas. "If you have all the answers already then why show up," he said, then flashed a particularly Kennedyesque smile. |

Black boxes show 'clear similarities' with Indonesia crash, Ethiopia says Posted: 17 Mar 2019 08:19 PM PDT Black box data recovered from an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed last week show "clear similarities" with a recent crash in Indonesia of the same type of aircraft, Ethiopia's transport minister said on Sunday. The announcement came a week after Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 plummeted into a field southeast of Addis Ababa minutes into its flight to Nairobi, killing all 157 people onboard. The disaster caused the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft involved after aviation regulators noticed similarities with the October crash of an Indonesian Lion Air 737 MAX 8 that killed all 189 passengers and crew. |

Mesut Ozil sparks new political row over wedding invite for Turkish president Posted: 18 Mar 2019 07:44 AM PDT The footballer Mesut Özil has become embroiled in a new political row in Germany over reports he asked Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey's president, to be guest of honour at his wedding. The Arsenal star resigned from the German national team last year claiming he was a victim of racism after coming under fire over his public support for Mr Erdoğan . German politicians spoke out after he was pictured with his fiancee, Amine Gulse, meeting Mr Erdoğan at Istanbul airport last week. "The fact this is still going on will disappoint a lot of football fans, including me," Angela Merkel's chief of staff, Helge Braun, told reporters. Bild, Germany's highest-selling newspaper, carried reports of the wedding invitation on its front page. Last year's extraordinary political row which culminated in one of Germany's biggest football stars quitting the national team began when Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan, another player of Turkish descent, posed for photographs with Mr Erdoğan in London. Özil's decision to pose alongside Mr Erdoğan last year set off a political row that culminated in his retirement from the German national team Credit: KAYHAN OZER/AFP Several Germans were being held in Turkey at the time as part of the regime's crackdown on opposition and press freedom, and the footballer's decision to pose alongside the Turkish president caused widespread public anger in Germany. Many blamed the controversy for Germany's poor performance in the World Cup, and Özil subsequently announced his retirement from the national team on Twitter, writing: "If we win, I'm German. If we lose, I'm an immigrant." A third-generation German whose grandparents immigrated from Turkey, Özil defended his decision to pose with Mr Erdoğan as "respecting the highest office of my family's country". He announced his engagement to Ms Gulse, a former Miss Turkey, earlier this year. "Everyone can invite whoever he likes to his wedding, and of course this also applies to Mesut Özil," said Cem Özdemir of the Green Party, Germany's highest-profile politician of Turkish heritage. "But both current and former national players are role models and must ask themselves whether they live up to that role if they indulge autocrats who enrich themselves at the expense of their country and make their opponents disappear in dungeons. I think that is inappropriate." |

New Zealand shooting: Jacinda Ardern to announce gun law reforms within 10 days Posted: 18 Mar 2019 01:11 AM PDT Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's prime minister, said on Monday gun law reforms would be announced in 10 days, after meeting her cabinet for the first time since the massacre in Christchurch. The shock of the attacks, in which 50 people were killed and dozens wounded at two mosques, has led to calls for an immediate tightening of laws to restrict access to some firearms, particularly semi-automatic weapons. Ms Ardern said on Monday that her cabinet had made in principle decisions around the reform of gun laws following the mass shooting in Christchurch "I intend to give further details of these decisions to the media and the public before cabinet meets again next Monday," she said at a press conference. "This ultimately means that within 10 days of this horrific act of terrorism we will have announced reforms which will, I believe, make our community safer." Terror in New Zealand | Read more She said an inquiry would look at the lead up to attack and what might have been done differently. The owner of a New Zealand gun store said on Monday the man charged with murder in Christchurch's mass shooting had bought firearms and ammunition online from the store, but it did not sell him the high-powered weapon used in the mosque shootings. Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with murder on Saturday. Tarrant was remanded without a plea and is due back in court on April 5 where police said he was likely to face more charges. Gun City owner David Tipple said the alleged gunman bought four weapons and ammunition between December 2017 and March 2018. "The MSSA, military-style automatic, reportedly used by the alleged gunman was not purchased from Gun City. Gun City did not sell him an MSSA, only A-category firearms," Mr Tipple told a news conference in Christchurch. Gun City owner David Tipple gestures during a press conference in Christchurch Credit: AP Under New Zealand gun laws, A-category weapons can be semi-automatic but limited to seven shots. Video of a gunman in one mosque showed a semi-automatic with a large magazine round. Mr Tipple said the online purchases followed a police-verified online mail-order process and A-category firearms were bought in three or four purchases. "We detected nothing extraordinary about the licence holder. He was a brand new purchaser, with a brand new licence," he said. Tightening New Zealand's gun laws was at the top of Ms Ardern's agenda for the Cabinet meeting on Monday. "What the public rightly are asking right now is why is it and how is it that you are currently able to buy military style semi-automatic weapons in New Zealand, and that's the right question to ask," Ms Ardern told TVNZ earlier on Monday. "There are ways we can bring in effective regulation of firearms that actually target those we need to target and that is our focus." Mr Tipple said he supported Ardern's call for gun law reforms as the Christchurch shootings had raised legitimate concerns. New Zealand, a country of only 5 million people, has an estimated 1.5 million firearms. The minimum age for a gun license is 16, and 18 to own a semi-automatic weapon. A Radio New Zealand report, based on police data secured through an Official Information Act request, said more than 99 percent of people who applied for a firearms licence in 2017 were successful. A New Zealand standard A-category firearm licence is issued after a police and background check. No licence is required to buy a large round magazine, which can be illegally modified for use in such a weapon. Only firearm owners are licensed, not weapons, so there is no monitoring of how many weapons a person may possess. The plans for gun control measures came as Tarrant's court-appointed lawyer said the suspect intended to represent himself. Duty lawyer Richard Peters, who represented Tarrant during the preliminary court hearing, told AFP the 28-year-old "indicated he does not want a lawyer". "He wants to be self-represented in this case," said Mr Peters, who played down suggestions that Tarrant may not be fit for trial. "The way he presented was rational and someone who was not suffering any mental disability. That's how he appeared. He seemed to understand what was going on," Mr Peters said. New Zealand mosque massacre - In pictures Ms Ardern was the first signatory of a national condolence book for the country's worst mass killing that she opened in the capital Wellington on Monday. "On behalf of all New Zealanders, we grieve together. We are one. They are us," she wrote in the book. Frustration was building among the families of victims as under Islam it is custom to conduct burials within 24 hours, but bodies will not be released until post mortems are carried out. Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha said the first body was approved for release on Sunday night, but the family was yet to take the body because another relative was also killed and they wanted to collect them together. He said there would be no burials on Monday. "We've been working fairly hard through the night to ensure the process of returning the deceased to their loved ones is taking place expediently," he said. The burial process, which usually involves washing with three kinds of water, salving wounds and scrubbing skin, would be complicated, volunteers in Christchurch said. Muslims embrace after overseeing the excavating of graves at a Muslim cemetery in Christchurch, New Zealand Credit: AP Mo, a volunteer who had flown in from Brisbane to wash the bodies, said the people who died in the mosques were classified as martyrs. That meant there were different views as to whether they would be washed or not because he said Islamic jurisprudence said martyrs are not to be washed as their blood was witness to their martyrdom. "But some people have said because it was not a battlefield it is okay to wash the body. But it is at the discretion of the family," said Mo. He asked to be identified by just one name. The two mosques involved in the shootings have been closed since the massacre, but are expected to reopen by Friday prayers after cleansing blessings were carried out, said Haumaha. "This morning we conducted two important blessings at the Deans Avenue mosques and the Linwood mosque," he said. "This blessing this morning gave them (the Muslim community) huge confidence...We hope to have those premises in place by the end of the week to allow our Muslim community to go back and undertake prayer." Paris police chief sacked after Champs-Elysees rioting Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:00 PM PDT The French government sacked the top police official in Paris on Monday following another weekend of rioting in the capital during "yellow vest" protests which have put President Emmanuel Macron on the defensive. The police's failure to keep the Paris protests from spiralling out of control over the weekend again cast a harsh spotlight on their tactics. About 5,000 police were deployed in the capital on Saturday, far outnumbering the several hundred black-clad rioters who caused havoc in front of groups of often passive policemen for more than seven hours on the famed Champs-Elysees. |
Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL look stunning in these new renders Posted: 18 Mar 2019 05:17 AM PDT This is already shaping up to be a very exciting year for smartphone fans. Well, it would be more accurate to say that 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Android smartphone fans. Apple's upcoming new iPhone 11 handsets are pretty much expected to be another round of "S" upgrades at this point. According to reports from the most accurate Apple insider on the planet, Apple's is sticking to the same notch design it introduced back in 2017 for this year's new iPhone models. They'll sport new cameras and some other new features along with performance upgrades, but the look will supposedly be about the same. Meanwhile, Android phone makers have finally decided to stop copying Apple -- for now, at least -- and come up with some exciting new designs of their own.Smartphone makers are trying all sorts of new ways to inch closer to all-screen smartphone designs. They're all stopgap solutions to tide us over while we wait for nifty new tech that allows cameras and other sensors to be hidden out of sight underneath a phone's display. In the meantime, companies are launching phones with pop-up cameras, slide-out cameras, and hole-punch cameras like the new Galaxy S10 line. It's that last design Google reportedly ended up choosing for its Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, and now the company's supposed leaked designs for its Pixel 4 lineup have been mocked up in fantastic new renders.Last week, a leaked sketch was said to have revealed the design of Google's upcoming Pixel 4 XL flagship phone. The sketch seemed a bit, well, sketchy... but subsequent reports suggested that it might be accurate. Now, a graphic designer who goes by @PhoneDesigner on Twitter took the ball and ran with it, using that leak and other rumors to mock up Google's new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones. In a word, the look stunning.https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106640786848911361https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106641399846498304https://twitter.com/PhoneDesigner/status/1106646117674958848Here's a closer look at a few of those images:As you can see, there are two slightly different designs Google is rumored to be using this year. The smaller Pixel 4 is said to have a single-lens rear camera along with a single-lens selfie camera. Meanwhile, the larger Pixel 4 XL is shown with a dual-lens selfie camera, and it's believed to be Google's first Pixel phone with a dual-lens rear camera. Both new handsets will reportedly make use of the new "hole-punch" camera design, where round or oblong holes are cut out of the screen to make room for front-facing camera lenses. It takes up less screen real estate than the traditional notch design Apple popularized with the iPhone X, so the results have higher screen-to-body ratios.Google's new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL designs have yet to be confirmed, but Android fans are in for a real treat if these concept renders end up being accurate. Google has historically been way behind the times with its Pixel phone designs, but a Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL that looks like these phones would fit perfectly among other phones that will be released this year. Google isn't expected to launch its new Pixel 4 lineup until sometime in October, however, so we have quite a while to wait before the phones' designs are confirmed. |

The nature of the backing and how it was delivered is unclear, but in a statement Anil Ambani thanked his billionaire brother "for standing by me during these trying times, and demonstrating the importance of staying true to our strong family values by extending this timely support". |

Why an unbuilt Moscow Trump tower caught Mueller's attention Posted: 18 Mar 2019 04:18 AM PDT Further information has come from Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal lawyer who was instrumental in the negotiations, in congressional testimony and in his guilty plea to a charge of lying to Congress about the project. Mueller's team said in a December 2018 court filing that "the Moscow Project was a lucrative business opportunity that sought, and likely required, the assistance of the Russian government. If the project was completed, the Company (the Trump Organization) could have received hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources in licensing fees and other revenues." The project is significant because it shows Trump was chasing a lucrative business deal in Russia at the same time that President Vladimir Putin's government, according to U.S. intelligence agencies, was conducting a hacking and propaganda campaign to boost his candidacy. |
