Xi arrives in Portugal to boost trade ties Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:04 AM PST Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Portugal on Tuesday for a two-day visit to boost economic ties, despite concern in some EU capitals over China's growing influence across the continent. The initiative offers loans to build railways, roads and ports across Asia, Europe and Africa. "Portugal is an important hub in the land and maritime silk routes," Xi said. |

UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile test Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:28 PM PST The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday at the request of France and Britain after they accused Iran of test-firing a medium-range missile at the weekend, diplomats said. The United States said the missile launch on Saturday was a violation of a UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, from which Washington has withdrawn. |
Shell to set sector-leading emissions targets after investor pressure Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:16 AM PST Rivals BP and Total have already set short-term targets on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but these are limited to their own operations. Shell's targets, which will be introduced in 2020, will be more extensive with inclusion of the so-called Scope 3 emissions from the burning of fuels sold to millions of customers around the world, the company said. Monday's move marks a change of tack for Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden, who had previously resisted setting hard goals, saying it would be "foolhardy" to expose Shell to legal challenges. |

Iran missile tests may breach UN resolution, France and UK warn Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:01 AM PST France and the UK have echoed warnings by Donald Trump's administration that Iran may be in breach of United Nations obligations by testing medium-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying multiple warheads. The remarks from Paris and London will be seen by the US government as the first sign that its key European partners may yet be persuaded to view Iran's broader behaviour as so dangerous that their support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal can no longer be justified. The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, criticised Iran's missile programme at the weekend and will be at a Nato foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels over the next two days to underline his message about the threat to Middle East stability posed by Iran. |
France's Macron hunts for way out of 'yellow vest' crisis Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:47 PM PST The "yellow vest" revolt caught Macron unawares when it erupted on Nov. 17 and poses a formidable challenge to the 40-year-old as he tries to counter a plunge in popularity over his economic reforms, which are seen as favoring the wealthy. Riot police were overrun on Saturday as protesters wrought havoc in Paris's fanciest neighborhoods, torching dozens of cars, looting boutiques and smashing up luxury private homes and cafes in the worst disturbances the capital has seen since 1968. Emerging from Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's office, opposition leader Laurent Wauquiez of the centre-right Les Republicains said the government failed to understand the depth of public anger. |
New president AMLO sets out Mexico's 'transformation' Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:37 PM PST Newly installed President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched his "transformation" of Mexico Monday with a return to presidential press conferences and a new commission to investigate the internationally condemned disappearance of 43 students in 2014. The anti-establishment leftist known as AMLO, who assumed the presidency Saturday, got down to business with a 6:00 am meeting with his public-security team, followed by a 7:00 am press conference -- something his predecessor, Enrique Pena Nieto, habitually avoided. "I promise you there will be no impunity, not in this terribly sad and painful case, and not in any other," Lopez Obrador said at a ceremony where the students' parents were present. |

CIA chief Haspel to brief Senate leaders on Khashoggi's death Posted: 04 Dec 2018 06:42 AM PST CIA Director Gina Haspel will give a closed briefing to leaders of several U.S. Senate committees on Tuesday on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to two sources familiar with the planned meeting. Some lawmakers were angry Haspel did not participate in a Senate briefing by Trump administration officials last week on Khashoggi's death at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The CIA has assessed that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the killing of Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government. |
Top US, Mexico diplomats meet in Washington amid migrant crisis Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:26 PM PST Mexico's new Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday for what he called a "friendly" meeting amid tensions over the migrant crisis at the border. The talks came one day after Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office as Mexico's new president. "Friendly conversation as a first approach towards a long standing understanding between Mexico and the USA," Ebrard said on Twitter. |
