Eight rhinos die after move to a new park in Kenya Posted: 13 Jul 2018 07:12 AM PDT Eight critically endangered black rhinos died after being moved to a new reserve in southern Kenya, the government said Friday, doubling the number of deaths from similar operations in the previous dozen years. Kenya's Tourism and Wildlife Minister Najib Balala ordered the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to "immediately suspend the ongoing translocation of black rhinos following the death of eight of them," according to a ministry statement. KWS, the government body responsible for the country's wildlife, has not commented on the deaths. |

Posted: 13 Jul 2018 11:11 AM PDT Donald Trump's former personal attorney was more deeply involved with Novartis – a drug company for whom he attempted to "sell access" to the White House – than previously disclosed, a new Senate report has claimed. A report drafted by Democrats on two Senate committees provides new insight into the controversial attempts by Michael Cohen, the president's long-time attorney and personal "fixer", to serve as a consultant on the new administration for outside companies. The effort – which earned Mr Cohen more than $4m in the months after Mr Trump's election – raised questions over whether he had improperly peddled his White House access, and failed to adequately register as a lobbyist. |

Unfiltered: ‘If you’re an ICE agent … quit your job’ Posted: 13 Jul 2018 10:29 AM PDT On the corner of West Houston and Varick Streets in New York City is a towering beige building. The Varick Street building is home to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center, where immigrants are detained and appear before an immigration court. According to data from ICE, the total number of immigrant arrests in New York City has increased by more than 65 percent in just the last year. |
Flooding fears as huge iceberg drifts close to Greenland village Posted: 13 Jul 2018 05:41 AM PDT A massive iceberg drifting near the coast of Greenland has triggered fears of flooding if it breaks up, leading the authorities to evacuate a high-risk zone. The authorities have urged residents of the Innarsuit island settlement with houses on a promontory to move away from the shore over fears that the iceberg, which was spotted on Thursday, could swamp the area. "We fear the iceberg could calve and send a flood towards the village," Lina Davidsen, a security chief at the Greenland police, told Danish news agency Ritzau on Friday. The settlement in northwestern Greenland has 169 inhabitants, but only those living closest to the iceberg have been evacuated, Ritzau reported. "The iceberg is still near the village and the police are now discussing what do to next," Kunuk Frediksen, a police chief in the Danish autonomous territory, told AFP. The incident comes weeks after scientists at New York University shot and released a video of a massive iceberg breaking free from a glacier in eastern Greenland in June. Last year, four people died and 11 were injured after an earthquake sparked a tsunami off another island settlement called Nuugaatsiaq, sending several houses crashing into the sea. |

UK police find 'small bottle' containing Novichok nerve agent Posted: 13 Jul 2018 10:01 AM PDT British police said Friday they have found a "small bottle" containing the Soviet-made nerve agent Novichok in the home of one of two Britons who fell ill from the substance last month. "On Wednesday, 11 July, a small bottle was recovered during searches of Charlie Rowley's house in Amesbury," police said in a statement, four months after a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with the same substance. "Scientists have now confirmed to us that the substance contained within the bottle is Novichok," the statement said, adding that the test were carried out at the Porton Down defence laboratory which first identified the substance. |

The absolute best and worst ice cream truck treats Posted: 13 Jul 2018 12:19 PM PDT The shrill screams of "IT'S HERE" every time the ice cream truck arrives is a staple of an American summer. Even now, as an adult, I still get that emotional rush when the truck pulls onto my block. But as a kid, it was always the sheer number of choices that made me question my entire existence. God forbid made an awful selection, wasting A WHOLE $2.00 of my parents' cash. To avoid a crisis like this for yourself, here are the best and worst treats that your local ice cream truck has to offer. SEE ALSO: Costco food court items, ranked The following ranking is a matter not of opinion, but of fact. The Best 1. The Choco Taco A post shared by Benjamin Strong (@benjaminstrong) on Jul 3, 2018 at 2:59pm PDT Whoever created this Klondike masterpiece deserves to retire in absolute peace and luxury. The waffle cone taco shell is so innovative, perfect for holding vanilla ice cream mixed with fudge swirls. Choco Taco brought new meaning to the word "crunch" and always makes for a satisfying ice cream snack. 2. The Firecracker A post shared by Popsicle (@popsicle) on Oct 11, 2017 at 2:39pm PDT Such a summertime classic. Kids will often slurp this Popsicle product on the Fourth of July because, you know, 'Murica. The red, white, and blue ice pop features three flavors — cherry, white lemon, and blue raspberry — making it essentially a three-for-one deal. As a kid, these things felt HUGE to me. 3. The Push-Up Pop A post shared by Toni (@love_tonic) on Oct 21, 2013 at 12:06pm PDT Nestlé really tried here. I can see what they're going for: a mess-free ice cream pop that you can take your time eating. It never works out that way, but who cares? These things are so good, it doesn't matter if you need three paper towels after eating. 4. The Drumstick A post shared by Jeremiah White (@jeremiah_irl) on Jun 29, 2018 at 12:45pm PDT This Nestlé creation takes the the classic ice cream scoop on a cone and turns it into something incredible. A scoop of vanilla ice cream encased in a chocolate shell and topped with nuts is completely revolutionary. Your fave could never. 5. Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Bar A post shared by Leah (@whatleahloves) on Jul 4, 2018 at 12:44pm PDT This bar by Good Humor is the pinnacle of ice cream-pop perfection. You get the sweet taste of strawberry ice cream with a crunchy exterior that makes it feel like you're eating an actual strawberry shortcake. 10/10. 6. The Ice Cream Sandwich A post shared by Hungry Muncher (@the_hungrymuncher) on Jun 27, 2018 at 6:24am PDT Another classic that will always be a solid choice, this treat most definitely paved the way for other variations of smooshed ice cream. Having sticky, chocolate crumb-covered fingers is an under-appreciated highlight of enjoying this incredible treat. 7. The Powerpuff Girls pop A post shared by Sunnyoboe (@sunnyoboe) on Jun 21, 2017 at 3:42pm PDT There are a ton of different cartoon-inspired ice cream pops, from SpongeBob SquarePants to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Anyone who's had one these will tell you that the bubblegum eyes are the absolute best part of this tangy treat. Even Paris Hilton couldn't resist the appeal of what she once perfectly referred to as "these little blonde bitches" on an episode of The Simple Life. "Can I have 5 more of these little blonde bitches?" By Paris Hilton is one of the most iconic quotes of all time https://t.co/YE0yNg6zdL — Cody (@codyspearz) August 10, 2015 8. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich A post shared by Good Humor (@goodhumor_icecream) on Aug 31, 2017 at 10:18am PDT All frozen sandwich treats should strive to be this amazing. Made by Good Humor, this sandwich takes the traditional ice cream sandwich and turns it up to 1,000. Eating vanilla ice cream smothered in chocolate chips, smashed beautifully between two chocolate chip cookies is an experience like no other. If pure gold was edible, this would be it. The Worst 1. Snow Cone A post shared by Popsicle (@popsicle) on Jun 12, 2018 at 8:00am PDT It's been almost two decades since my childhood, and I'm still wondering why this is even still a thing. You can get a solid Snow Cone, or even an Italian Ice (which is honestly 1,000 percent better) from literally anywhere else and it would be better than having to eat out of those awful paper cones. Any time you order this item, you've pretty much resigned yourself to a race against a melting pile of blandly flavored ice. And if it's an especially hot day? Forget about it. Have fun with your soggy piece of paper, kiddo. 2. The Fudgsicle A post shared by Andrea Wilkovich (@awilkovich) on May 9, 2018 at 10:59am PDT These are just so basic. Chocolate is supposed to have a rich and distinct flavor, and this thing is the equivalent of frozen cardboard. Not to mention, everyone looks ridiculous with melted chocolate popsicle smeared all over their hands and mouths. 3. The Orange Creamsicle A post shared by Melissa Librandi (@missmelissbakes) on Jul 1, 2018 at 6:54pm PDT These aren't too popular with the kids. I know plenty of adults, including my parents, who LIVE for these orange-encased ice cream pops. But a kid? I don't think so. The child in me is still repulsed by these things and would much rather stick to chocolates and vanillas. It isn't exactly a HORRIBLE flavor, but it doesn't quite contend with the other amazing flavors hiding in your local ice cream truck's freezer. 4. Just...Ice Cream A post shared by Creator : Marissa.G (@thelifestylenthusiast) on Jul 8, 2018 at 4:51pm PDT With the creative popsicles and frozen sandwiches on the menu, why would you go for just plain ice cream? I guess the appeal of this treat is that, more often than not, it'll be soft-serve, which can be hard to track down elsewhere. But other than that, this classic tends to melt too quickly and is limited to the vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry trifecta. Not very fun. 5. The Lemon Ice A post shared by Karen (@kmspin) on May 26, 2014 at 5:37am PDT Again, just another really basic thing to get at an ice cream truck. If you're looking for something citrusy and frozen-ish, then I guess this is for you? But why Lemon Ice? Just have some lemonade with a bunch of ice and you're good to go. 6. The Malt Cup A post shared by Toni Lannert (@todela76) on Aug 23, 2017 at 11:21am PDT No one, and I mean no one from my childhood or adulthood, has ever ordered these. Even the name of this thing puts me off. It sounds like someone took a bunch of malt balls and blended them together to create this awful mess. Gross. Now get out there and track down the nearest ice cream truck. You deserve it. WATCH: Turn frozen fruit into delicious soft serve with this DIY dessert maker |
Danish man charged with starting destructive Colorado wildfire Posted: 12 Jul 2018 08:54 PM PDT By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - A Danish national accused of starting the second-largest wildfire on record in Colorado was charged on Thursday with 141 counts of first-degree arson for each building destroyed in the massive blaze, court documents showed. Jesper Joergensen, 52, was advised of the felony charges in Costilla County Court via a telephone hook-up from the county jail where he is being held on a $50,000 bond for igniting the Spring Creek Fire in southern Colorado on June 27. The blaze has scorched nearly 108,000 acres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, although wetter weather and mild temperatures this week have allowed crews to carve containment lines around 83 percent of the fire by Thursday afternoon, according to the InciWeb federal tracking website. |

Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $4.7bn to 22 women over talc products linked to ovarian cancer Posted: 13 Jul 2018 02:06 AM PDT US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay out $4.69 billion (£3.57 billion) in damages in a lawsuit representing 22 women and their families who alleged a talc sold by the company contained asbestos and caused them to suffer cancer. It is the latest twist in a matter that has seen several thousand lawsuits filed against J&J. According to the victims' lawyer, Mark Lanier, a jury composed of six men and six women in St Louis, Missouri, ruled in favour of the women after a six-week trial and eight hours of deliberation. The damages include $550 million in compensation and over $4.1 billion in punitive damages. The plaintiffs said using the talc for personal hygiene had caused ovarian cancer. "For over 40 years, Johnson & Johnson has covered up the evidence of asbestos in their products," Lanier said in a statement. In a separate ruling in 2017 a court ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a record $417 million to Echevarria, a woman who claimed that the talc in the company's iconic baby powder causes ovarian cancer "We hope this verdict will get the attention of the J&J board and that it will lead them to better inform the medical community and the public about the connection between asbestos, talc, and ovarian cancer," he said, calling for talc to be pulled from the market. J&J said it was "deeply disappointed in the verdict." In a statement, it described the trial as "a fundamentally unfair process that allowed plaintiffs to present a group of 22 women, most of whom had no connection to Missouri, in a single case all alleging that they developed ovarian cancer." "The result of the verdict, which awarded the exact same amounts to all plaintiffs irrespective of their individual facts, and differences in applicable law, reflects that the evidence in the case was simply overwhelmed by the prejudice of this type of proceeding." The company said its talc does not contain asbestos or cause ovarian cancer, and vowed it would "pursue all available appellate remedies." Several similar trials have already taken place, with a Los Angeles appeals court last October dismissing a $417 million verdict against J&J, saying the complainant's arguments were insufficient and vague. |

Israel pummels Gaza with biggest daytime bombardment against Hamas since 2014 war Posted: 13 Jul 2018 09:52 PM PDT Israel's air force carried out the largest daytime airstrike campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the 2014 war on Saturday, killing two teenagers in an escalation of violence in the region after months of deadly protests. The Israeli air strikes came as Hamas intensified its attacks, firing dozens of mortar rounds at Israel on Friday night and throughout Saturday, some of which were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defence system. Witnesses said the Israeli air strike hit an empty building in Gaza City and the two casualties were passers-by. A further 15 Palestinians were also reported to have been injured, as well as three Israelis. An Israeli government official said it had decided "to take strong action against Gaza aggression". The escalation follows violent protests on the Gaza border on Friday in which two Palestinians were also killed - a 15-year-old and a 20-year old - and more than 220 injured, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel said one of its soldiers was injured. About | The two-state solution The Israeli army said it conducted strikes against Hamas "in response to the terror acts instigated during the violent riots that took place along the security fence" on Friday, as well as what it described as daily arson attacks from the Gaza strip into Israeli territory. Israeli fighter jets hit 40 Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip in four military compounds, according to the IDF, in strikes that began in the early hours of Saturday morning and continued through the day. In a relatively rare admission, Hamas said it fired the rockets and mortars - 60 as of Saturday night - to deter Israel from further action, as an "immediate response". Palestinian rockets being fired from Gaza City towards Israel Credit: STRINGER/AFP/Getty Images The military attacks eclipsed similar clashes in May, and come after weeks of warnings from Israel that it does not want to pursue a new conflict to add to three wars over the past decade, but it would not tolerate Hamas militants' continued efforts to breach the border and target Israeli border communities. Palestinians in Gaza have been demonstrating for months against Israel's decade-long blockade and for their right to return to lands they lost in the 1948 establishment of Israel. Since protests began, at least 141 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. No Israelis have been killed. |

Migrant boat crisis exposes splits within Italy's populist coalition Posted: 13 Jul 2018 08:55 AM PDT Italy's treatment of a group of asylum seekers rescued in the Mediterranean exposed simmering tensions within the country's populist government on Friday. The 67 migrants were plucked from the sea earlier this week by an Italian-flagged merchant ship, then transferred to a coast guard patrol vessel and disembarked in the port of Trapani, Sicily, late on Thursday. Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and head of the hard-Right League party, had delayed their disembarkation for hours, calling for police and prosecutors to question two African migrants alleged to have made death threats against the crew of the merchant ship, the Vos Thalassa, because they feared being sent back to Libya. But in a rare intervention, Sergio Mattarella, Italy's president, demanded that the migrants be allowed off the ship for humanitarian reasons. The request was acted on by the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, a former law professor who was picked as a neutral intermediary between The League and their coalition partners the Five Star Movement. A migrant disembarks, escorted by police, from Italy's Diciotti coast guard vessel in the port of Trapani on July 12, 2018 Credit: AFP Mr Salvini expressed "regret and amazement" at the intervention by the president. But Luigi Di Maio, the head of Five Star and also a deputy prime minister, said the head of state's decision should be respected. Mr Salvini's strident anti-migrant rhetoric and his decision to ban NGO rescue ships from Italian ports has led to a dramatic rise in support for The League. But it has been criticised by some MPs from the Five Star Movement, which has a strong centre-Left element, straining the cohesion of the coalition. Roberto Fico, a high-profile Five Star figure and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, has spoken out against Mr Salvini's decision to force NGO rescue ships to head to other countries such as Malta and Spain. Immigrant relations map migrant immigration Europe Italy "I would not close the ports," he said two weeks ago during a visit to a migrant reception centre in Pozzallo, Sicily. Libya was dangerous for migrants, who routinely say they are beaten, tortured and raped by smugglers, and humanitarian groups had done "extraordinary work" in the Mediterranean, he said. Mr Salvini has been so vocal and visible since the coalition was sworn in last month that it sometimes seems as if he is interior minister, foreign minister and prime minister all rolled into one. His high profile has eclipsed that of Mr Di Maio and The League is now more popular than Five Star, according to some polls. Mediterranean migration A recent survey found that support for The League had increased from 17 per cent in March's general election to 31.2 per cent, outstripping Five Star's 29.8 per cent. Publicly the two parties insist there are no differences between them but the extraordinary rise of Mr Salvini and The League is a direct threat to Five Star, which was supposed to be the senior partner in the coalition, having won far more votes at the general election. The migrants who disembarked in Sicily denied that they had made threats to the crew of the Italian merchant ship. "We didn't attack anyone, there were five or 10 minutes of great confusion and fear, but we didn't want to hurt anyone," they said through a cultural mediation official. "We were terrified, we didn't want to go back to Libya. We were ready to dive into the sea and risk our lives rather than being sent back." Meanwhile, a fresh crisis loomed on Friday, with the arrival in the Mediterranean of a boat carrying 450 asylum seekers. Mr Salvini insisted the boat was in Maltese waters and was the responsibility of the government in Valletta. "Malta, the smugglers and the do-gooders of Italy should know that this boat CANNOT and MUST NOT arrive in an Italian port," he wrote on Twitter. "We've already done our bit, understood?" |

Russian-backed government forces raised the flag in Daraa city on Thursday, but the regime still has two regions outside its control -- and influential neighbours -- to contend with.
