Alabama man walks free after 30 years on death row Posted: 03 Apr 2015 03:46 PM PDT An Alabama man who spent 30 years on death row for crimes he didn't commit walked free from court on Friday after his conviction for a 1985 double murder was overturned because of insufficient evidence. Anthony Ray Hinton, 58, emerged from Jefferson County Courthouse to cheers from well-wishers before being embraced by tearful friends and relatives, a day after a judge had dismissed all charges against him. "Sun do shine," an emotional Hinton said moments after his release. Hinton was released after a key piece of ballistics evidence used against him in his December 1986 trial for two separate murders during robberies in Birmingham was discredited. |

Rough road ahead for jurors in Boston Marathon trial Posted: 03 Apr 2015 04:03 AM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Two decades have passed since Timothy McVeigh set off a truck bomb outside a federal office building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, but the memory remains vivid for Tonya McCabe, who sat on the jury that sentenced him to die. They saw autopsy photos of the mangled bodies of restaurant manager Krystle Campbell, 29, and Chinese graduate student Lingzi Lu, 23. |
Police created 'dangerous crossfire' in pursuing Boston bombers: report Posted: 03 Apr 2015 12:03 PM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Law enforcement created "dangerous crossfire situations" while trying to apprehend the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, according to a state report on the emergency response that was released on Friday. Police officers lacked "weapons discipline" during a gun battle with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed a short time later, in the early hours of April 19, 2013, the report found. The weapons problem also plagued officers arresting the younger brother, according to the 130-page report made public by the Massachusetts' emergency management agency. Tsarnaev, 21, is currently on trial in federal court for detonating two pressure cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, killing three people and injuring 264, as well as for murdering a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer while trying to flee three days later. |
Seven officers suspended from San Francisco force over racist texts Posted: 03 Apr 2015 02:13 PM PDT (Reuters) - Seven San Francisco police officers linked to a scandal over racist and homophobic text messages were suspended with the recommendation they be fired, Chief Greg Suhr said on Friday. "There is also no place in the SFPD for any officer capable of the thinking expressed in these hateful text messages," Suhr said in a statement. "The officers responsible for the reprehensible texts should be separated from the SFPD as soon as practical. The fine, right-minded men and women of the SFPD that are of the impeccable character required of a Guardian (police officer) expect no less," he said. |
Netanyahu says Iran must accept Israel's existence Posted: 03 Apr 2015 08:22 AM PDT Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded that Iranian recognition of Israel's right to exist be written into an emerging nuclear deal, as he convened top officials for talks on Friday. After meeting his security cabinet, which comprises key ministers, National Security Adviser Yossi Cohen and other officials, he said they were unanimous in their opposition to the framework agreement which emerged Thursday from marathon talks in Switzerland between the Islamic republic and world powers. "Israel demands that any final agreement with Iran will include a clear and unambiguous Iranian recognition of Israel's right to exist,' he said. |
