Russia, digesting U.S. diplomatic retaliation, pledges 'harsh' response Posted: 01 Sep 2017 07:56 AM PDT By Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Friday it would respond harshly to any U.S. measures designed to hurt it, a day after the United States told Moscow to close its San Francisco consulate and buildings in Washington and New York. The warning, from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, came as Russia said it was weighing a response to the U.S. move that will force it to shutter two trade missions in the United States as well as the San Francisco consulate by Sept. 2. |

Shock as Kenya court cancels vote result, demands re-run Posted: 01 Sep 2017 08:32 AM PDT Kenya's Supreme Court on Friday ordered a new presidential election within 60 days, in a shock ruling cancelling the results of last month's poll over widespread irregularities. Chief Justice David Maraga said a majority decision by the panel of six judges, with two dissenting, found that President Uhuru Kenyatta "was not validly elected", rendering the result "invalid, null and void". Supporters of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga's wept and cheered, utterly stunned at what they saw as a historic ruling, after losses in successive polls they believe were rigged, from a judiciary long seen as compromised in favour of the ruling elite. |
China makes disrespect of national anthem a crime Posted: 01 Sep 2017 03:23 AM PDT By Christian Shepherd and Venus Wu BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Anyone who mocks China's national anthem faces up to 15 days in police detention after parliament criminalized such acts in a new law on Friday that covers Hong Kong and Macau. Since taking over as president, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has ushered in new legislation aimed at securing the country from threats both within and outside its borders, besides presiding over a sweeping crackdown on dissent and free speech. Protecting "the dignity of the national anthem" will help "promote patriotism and nurture socialist core values", says the new law passed by the National People's Congress (NPC). The new law brings treatment of the anthem into line with desecration of China's national flag, or its emblem, which has been a criminal offense punishable by up to 15 days' detention since the 1990s. |

Jeff Sessions' Justice Department to put woman who laughed at him on trial again Posted: 01 Sep 2017 10:58 AM PDT Jeff Sessions' Justice Department reportedly intends take a woman who laughed at the now-attorney general back to trial. Code Pink activist Desiree Fairooz, 61, who was taken into custody after she laughed during Mr Sessions' confirmation hearing, will go to trial in November for a second time. In July, a judge had thrown out out a jury's conviction of Ms Fairooz, finding that the government had improperly argued during the proceedings that her laughter was enough to merit a guilty verdict. |

New Jersey Senator Menendez fails to win breaks in corruption trial Posted: 01 Sep 2017 09:09 AM PDT A federal judge has rejected Senator Robert Menendez's request to allow breaks in his corruption trial beginning next Wednesday so the New Jersey Democrat could travel to Washington to cast critical Senate votes. In a decision made public on Friday, U.S. District Judge William Walls in Newark, New Jersey, rejected Menendez's claim that he deserved special treatment because he had a "constitutional duty" to be in Washington for his constituents. Walls said he suspected the request was part of a strategy to "impress the jurors" with Menendez's importance, but that it was speculative to suggest the senator would miss key votes. |

Dog almost euthanised for being 'too energetic' is saving lives after Hurricane Harvey Posted: 01 Sep 2017 03:10 AM PDT A dog which was almost put down for being "too energetic" is now putting his life on the line for humans in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Rocket has been trained to save lives by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and is now assisting search and rescue teams with their recovery efforts. His high energy - which almost cost him his life - has become his greatest asset. The black and white border collie mix was rescued from an animal shelter where he was due to be put down because it was felt no one would want to adopt him. However, the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation felt differently and decided to test him. Credit: National Disaster Search Dog Foundation He failed his first test, so was almost consigned back to death row until the volunteer who tested him couldn't get him out of her mind. She and her husband adopted the dog and took him out with search rescue dogs. He was trained up a year later and paired with Michael Stornetta, an engineer with the Windsor Fire District in Sonoma County. The two have now traveled to Texas together to save lives after Hurricane Harvey. Meet the people of Texas who refused to leave their animals behind 01:56 Dogs like Rocket are taught to find live people buried beneath rubble or otherwise trapped in the wake of a disaster. As the water recedes, he is supposed to make sure no one is left behind. "I think it's just a testament that, just because an animal ends up in the shelter doesn't mean that they are an animal that someone doesn't want or that they don't have a lot to give to the community," the society's spokeswoman, Dawn Foster told the Sacramento Bee. |

Donald Trump's pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio may not be upheld by a US court Posted: 31 Aug 2017 10:23 AM PDT Donald Trump's controversial pardon of Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio may not go through due to a US district court judge. Judge Susan Bolton of the US District Court handling Mr Arpaio's case has cancelled a sentencing hearing for the former Maricopa County sheriff but stopped short of throwing out his conviction. Instead, Ms Bolton said that because a presidential pardon carries an implication of guilt she wants both Mr Arpaio's lawyers and the US Department of Justice to submit briefs on why she should or should not vacate Mr Arpaio's conviction. |
Kenyan court scraps presidential vote, Kenyatta calls for calm Posted: 01 Sep 2017 09:23 AM PDT By Maggie Fick and George Obulutsa NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's Supreme Court on Friday nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's election win, citing irregularities, and ordered a new poll within 60 days, an unprecedented move in Africa where governments often hold sway over judges. Kenyatta called for calm and respect for the ruling and said he would run again in a televised speech. Kenya, a U.S. ally in the fight against Islamists and a trade gateway to East Africa, has a history of disputed votes. |

Posted: 31 Aug 2017 03:09 AM PDT A new species is being discovered in the Amazon every two days from fire-tailed titi monkeys and yellow-moustached lizards to pink river dolphins and honeycomb-patterned stingrays, according to a new report. Conservation group World Wildlife Fund, who wrote the report along with Brazil's Mamiraua Institute, said the astonishing rate of new finds showed scientists had still only scratched the surface of all the "incredible species" that live there. Sarah Hutchison, WWF's head of programmes for Brazil and Amazon, said: "We are only at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unveiling the incredible species that live in the Amazon, yet instead of this precious area being safeguarded, it is under greater threat than ever before. |
