Detractors deride Duterte for asking Filipinos to leave Kuwait Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:31 PM PDT By Neil Jerome Morales MANILA (Reuters) - A Philippine labor group and a senator accused President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday of gambling with the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Filipinos in Kuwait, after he asked them to come home amid a diplomatic dispute over reported labor abuse. The Philippines and the Gulf Arab state are embroiled in a row over what Duterte says is a pattern of mistreatment of domestic workers by Kuwaiti employers. The Philippine ambassador has been asked to leave following attempts by embassy workers to "rescue" distressed workers there, which Kuwait says is a breach of its sovereignty. |

McDonald's torched, hundreds arrested in May Day protests in Paris Posted: 01 May 2018 03:49 PM PDT Nearly 300 protesters were arrested Tuesday after May Day riots in central Paris, where hooded youths torched a McDonald's restaurant and several vehicles during a march against President Emmanuel Macron's public sector reforms. Shouting "Rise up, Paris" and "Everyone hates the police", around 1,200 people in black jackets and face masks joined the traditional May 1 union-led demonstration for workers' rights, according to a count by Paris police. After trying to hold up the march a group of protesters ran amok along the route, destroying a McDonald's restaurant near Austerlitz station, east of the city centre, and setting it ablaze. |

Shouting slogans such as "Rise up, Paris" and "Everyone hates the police", over 1,000 youths with black jackets and face masks joined the traditional union-led demonstration for worker's rights. |
Here's what happened when Trump asked Bill Gates to be his science advisor Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:59 PM PDT In a March meeting with Bill Gates, President Trump reportedly asked the billionaire philanthropist if he wanted the prestigious job of White House science advisor, a role that's been left unfilled up to this point. Apparently, without hesitation, Gates declined the proposition, according to Stat News, which recently sat down with Gates to discuss the rather unsettling possibility of another virulent global flu pandemic. (In 1918-1919, a now common strain of flu killed as many as 50 million people worldwide.) SEE ALSO: You're more likely to get the flu from a sick flight attendant than a sick passenger: study After getting Trump excited about the potential of a universal flu vaccine — which Gates hopes innovative scientists will achieve with his financial backing — Gates is said to have asked why the president still hadn't filled the important position of White House science advisor. "I mentioned: 'Hey, maybe we should have a science advisor'," said Gates. In response, Trump asked if Gates wanted the job, to which Gates replied, "That's not a good use of my time." That's a diplomatic, if not completely honest response. Gates is a lot of things: a computer programmer, philanthropist, celebrity, businessman, etc. But he's not technically a scientist. Mashable contacted the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for confirmation that the event took place, and will update this story upon hearing back. In any case, there's little doubt the intelligent Gates understands much about the realms of sciences that he's actively engaged in — notably vaccines and public health — but the science advisor vacancy is surely better filled by a practicing scientist. The last scientific advisor to grace the White House, John Holdren, served President Obama for eight years. Following Obama's departure, Holdren returned to his post at Harvard University, where he is a professor of environmental science and policy in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Trump is the first president in more than half a century, since President John F. Kennedy, who hasn't nominated a science advisor in the first year of his term. It's unknown whether Trump will ever nominate anyone, though it would likely be to his benefit. While president, Trump has failed to recognize that weather and climate are substantially different phenomena, for instance. In Ghana to discuss public health solutions, Bill Gates gives a child a rotavirus vaccine against diarrhea on March 26, 2013.Image: PIUS UTOMI EKPEI/AFP/Getty ImagesGates called the meeting "the longest conversation about universal flu vaccine that the president's ever had." So, perhaps the president — who still has no science advisor — came to better recognize the benefits of the sciences, particularly those in the public health realm, to greater society. Perhaps. A flu pandemic, according to the CDC, is what happens when a new flu strain leads to a global outbreak, which is what humanity experienced in 1918-1919. Since our bodies have never encountered the bug before, we have little to no immune defense. A universal vaccine — still just a medical hope for scientists around the world — could dramatically limit a new pathogen's ability to overtake our hapless bodies. "One thing's for sure: No matter what your framework is, even if it's that human benefits outside the country count for zero, stopping pandemics is a smart thing," said Gates. Posted: 01 May 2018 03:09 AM PDT The nuclear deal with Iran is "vitally important" to ensure the country's atomic programme is "exclusively peaceful", the UK has said, despite accusations from Israel and the US that the agreement has been breached. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, unveiled what he claimed were documents which reveal Tehran covertly pursued nuclear weapons before signing a deal with world powers in 2015. The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said the information showed Iran's leaders lied about a nuclear weapons programme known as "Project Amad". |
Tiger cub found in duffel bag at US-Mexico border Posted: 01 May 2018 02:10 PM PDT A live tiger cub was found curled up in a duffel bag at the US-Mexico border on Monday after smugglers abandoned an attempt to cross into the US. Smugglers left behind the bag containing the animal and fled back to Mexico after attempting to cross the Rio Grande into Texas. Border Patrol agents spotted three people trying to enter the US illegally along the river near Brownsville. An agency statement says the trio abandoned a bag and returned to Mexico. Officers discovered the cub stuffed in the bag. Armenia protest leader calls for general strike Posted: 01 May 2018 11:24 AM PDT By Hasmik Mkrtchyan and Margarita Antidze YEREVAN (Reuters) - The leader of an Armenian protest movement that forced the country's veteran leader to step down announced on Tuesday a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience after the ruling party thwarted his bid to take over as prime minister. Addressing tens of thousands of people gathered in a square in the Armenian capital, Nikol Pashinyan said that starting from 8:15 (12.15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday morning, his supporters would block roads, railways and airports. The planned day of protest in the small ex-Soviet state sets up a standoff between Pashinyan's movement, which has mobilised thousands of people to take to the streets, and a ruling elite which is determined to hold on to power and still controls the security apparatus. |

Tehran dismisses Pompeo's 'unfounded' accusations Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:18 AM PDT Iran on Monday dismissed "unfounded" accusations by new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over its "ambition to dominate the Middle East". Pompeo lashed out at Tehran on Sunday during a rapid tour of Middle East allies ahead of a crucial White House decision on whether to quit a landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Speaking during a visit to Iran's arch-rival and key US ally Saudi Arabia just days after he took office, Pompeo accused Tehran of destabilising the Middle East through its support for Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and for rebels in Yemen. |

Mindfulness could help to stave off dementia, research suggests Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:30 PM PDT Mindfulness and meditation could stave off dementia, research suggests. Analysis of research involving 30,000 people found that those who suffered moderate to severe anxiety in mid-life were more likely to develop dementia years later. Researchers said responses to stress may speed up brain cell ageing and degenerative changes in the central nervous system, increasing vulnerability to conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. And they said therapies such as mindfulness and meditation, which have been found to reduce anxiety, might reduce the risk of later dementia. Researchers from University College London examined studies looking at the association between mid-life anxiety, depression, and the development of dementia. The findings, published in BMJ Open, found an association between moderate to severe anxiety and future dementia, with a gap of at least 10 years in between diagnoses. Dementia | Read more The findings back up recent evidence pointing to a link between anxiety and risk of mild cognitive impairment, and lend weight to the known association between depression and dementia, they say. Researchers said more research was needed to establish whether reduced anxiety in middle age could reduce the risk of dementia. But they said approaches other than anti-anxiety drugs were worth exploring/ "Non-pharmacological therapies, including talking therapies and mindfulness-based interventions and meditation practices, that are known to reduce anxiety in midlife, could have a risk reducing effect, although this is yet to be thoroughly researched," they said. Study author Dr Natalie Marchant, from UCL's division of psychiatry, said: "Clinically significant anxiety in midlife was associated with an increased risk of dementia over an interval of at least 10 years. "These findings indicate that anxiety may be a risk factor for late-life dementia". GPs should monitor patients suffering from anxiety in case of heightened risks, she suggested. Mindfulness: a cheat's guide "Given the high prevalence of anxiety seen in primary care, we suggest that general practitioners could consider anxiety alongside depression as an indicator of risk for dementia. "To improve the rate of earlier diagnosis of dementia, close monitoring of subtle cognitive decline in older adults with a history of anxiety, depression and cerebrovascular disease would be encouraged," she said. Last year a trial suggested mindfulness - a meditative practice of paying more attention to the present moment, is more than twice as better at reducing stress than gardening The practice - which can involve deep breathing, has been growing in popularity in recent years, with the NHS recommending it as a way to reduce stress and anxiety. The eight week trial by the BBC and the University of Westminster showed it was better than gardening and yoga at helping people to relax. US scientists recently found that an eight week course of mindfulness, involving daily classes, can help lower inflammatory molecules and stress hormones by around 15 per cent. |
