Fighting child abuse must be Church's priority: Vatican panel Posted: 09 Sep 2018 12:14 PM PDT A Vatican commission on child protection set up by Pope Francis said Sunday that the fight against abuse must be the priority of the Catholic Church and emphasised the importance of listening to victims. The Church has been deeply shaken by a series of child abuse scandals across the world, and the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors was created in 2014 and renewed earlier this year to address the issue. "We make a real effort to bring the voices of the survivors to church leadership," O'Malley told the Vatican's news website on Sunday after the end of the commission's ninth plenary assembly. |

Japan toll 44 after strong quake, no more missing Posted: 09 Sep 2018 10:15 PM PDT The death toll from a powerful earthquake that triggered massive landslides in northern Japan rose to 44 on Monday with tens of thousands of police and troops still on the ground to support survivors. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said no one was left on a missing list, which suggested the figure could be the final death toll. Around 40,000 police, fire fighters, troops and maritime safety officials were providing assistance, with more than 2,700 people still forced to stay in shelters after the killer quake struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido last week. |

Spotlight on Alibaba CEO Zhang as Jack Ma starts retirement countdown Posted: 10 Sep 2018 02:42 AM PDT BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Unlike his charismatic boss, Jack Ma, Alibaba chief executive Daniel Zhang isn't usually one to grab the limelight, let alone make kung fu movies with superstars or dance in public. "We don't know much about (Zhang) even though he's been CEO for a while, because he's by nature a very low-key person, low profile. The handover of power, the first such transition for any of China's major tech firms, will see Zhang, 46, elevated to the top of a sprawling empire that spans e-commerce, payments, fast food delivery and brick-and-mortar retail. |
Posted: 10 Sep 2018 08:47 AM PDT A missing Maltese professor who promised the Trump campaign "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the presidential election may be dead, a US court has been told. Joseph Mifsud, a former teaching fellow at Stirling University, held meetings in 2016 with George Papadopoulos, a former Trump administration foreign policy adviser who was jailed last week for lying to the FBI, including over his connections to the 57-year-old professor. Prosecutors in the Papadopoulos case allege Mr Mifsud touted his "substantial connections with Russian government officials", who could deliver "thousands of emails" featuring incriminating information against Ms Clinton. |

Moonves, who transformed the corporation into the most watched television network in the country, was one of the most respected executives in Hollywood until he was first publicly accused. Two articles published by The New Yorker -- on July 27 and on the day that his departure was announced -- detailed allegations against the 68-year-old television titan from 12 different women. |

Kim Jong-un gets his kicks but rockets absent at North Korea's 70th birthday bash Posted: 09 Sep 2018 02:37 PM PDT North Korea on Sunday marked the 70th anniversary of the country's founding with a parade of goose-stepping soldiers, tanks and military hardware, but it held back on displaying its intercontinental ballistic missiles, believed to be capable of hitting the United States. The parade was considerably more muted than the bombast seen in previous years and much of the mass public event was devoted to lauding civilian efforts to strengthen the local economy. Analysts said the switch in focus and absence of the usual visual jingoism not only underscored leader Kim Jong-un's strong emphasis on the economy but could also be interpreted as a conciliatory gesture towards Washington. Sunday morning's parade came amid stalled diplomatic talks with the US over the issue of denuclearisation. It had been feared that the appearance of advanced missiles would have been viewed as a provocation by the Trump administration and could have destabilised the uneasy détente that has existed since the two countries' leaders met at a historic June summit in Singapore. Washington and Pyongyang have reached an impasse over the starting point for disarmament. The US wants Kim to proceed with denuclearisation first, but North Korea wants its security guaranteed and a peace agreement to formally end the Korean War of 1950-53. On Friday President Trump told reporters on Air Force One that a personal letter from Kim Jong-un was going to be delivered soon. "I think it's going to be a positive letter," he predicted. Earlier the president had tweeted his thanks to Kim for his "unwavering faith" in him, adding "We will get it done together!" in reference to denuclearisation. And, indeed, the deal is on but Kim will not fully denuclearise," North Korea analyst Loretta Napoleoni told The Telegraph. Analysts have repeatedly warned that despite the current thaw on the Korean Peninsula, Kim has never committed to fully surrendering his nuclear weapons. He explained: "They don't test nuclear weapons or show them off at parades; we pretend they don't exist." According to reporters at the scene, the parade was split into two sections, civilian and military. The military segment featured soldiers wearing uniforms from different periods of national history, then switching to civilian groups, ranging from nurses to construction workers alongside colourful floats. The mass games involve tens of thousands of people performing precisely choreographed dancing in a symbol of national unity. This year's spectacle - tickets start at just over $100 and go up to more than $800 per seat - also has a strong economic theme. |

Analysts said the early withdrawal of 54-year-old Ma, the charismatic face of a company that has revolutionised how and what China's people consume, will challenge Alibaba to carry on Ma's vision amid rising competition. "Day-to-day operations-wise Alibaba will not be affected that much. |
