Castile's death drew national attention, coming amid a wave of high-profile police killings of black men, which sparked street protests in cities across the United States. |

Dog in forlorn search for owner after China landslide: state media Posted: 25 Jun 2017 02:57 AM PDT A droopy-eyed white dog apparently looking for its owner has been found in the rubble of a landslide that buried a village in southwest China, a state broadcaster said Sunday. A rescuer was seen on English-language channel CGTN trying to coax the downcast canine away from the mound of rocks and earth that has left more than 100 people missing in Xinmo, Sichuan province, but the animal refused to leave. Little doggie, where is your owner?" a rescuer could be heard saying off camera as the dog sits with its ears dropped down. |

'Anonymous' says NASA has found alien life, but let's all slow the hell down Posted: 26 Jun 2017 08:30 AM PDT The shadowy hacker collective Anonymous believes that NASA is about to announce that it has discovered alien life of some kind. We've looked into these claims and concluded they are, at best, a bone-headed misunderstanding of mundane statements from a NASA official in April, or, at worst, a bold-faced lie playing all of us for clicks. Either way, it's not worth our time to fully debunk or yours to deeply consider. Simply put, there's no evidence that NASA is about to reveal that it's found aliens. SEE ALSO: It's not aliens. It's never aliens. Stop saying it's aliens. Anonymous cites out-of-context testimony from Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, given during an April 26 hearing before the House Science, Space and Technology. Consider what Zurbuchen actually said in his written testimony [emphasis added]: "... We haven't found definitive signs of life elsewhere just yet, our search is making remarkable progress and astrobiology is a focus of a growing number of NASA missions." That's a far cry from saying something like, "Oh boy, oh wow, we've definitely found little green men, but I can't tell you about it yet because we're a very secretive government agency," which seems to be what Anonymous heard. Oh, and also, Zurbuchen flatly denies the Anonymous report. Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question. — Thomas Zurbuchen (@Dr_ThomasZ) June 26, 2017 Here are some other stories to catch you up on what NASA has actually been up to on its hunt for life in the solar system: NASA's newest treasure trove of alien planets will help us find our place in the galaxy These seven planets could be where we find alien life NASA confirms discovery of nearest rocky exoplanet to Earth so far Potentially habitable planet found orbiting our neighboring star If we keep using 'Earth-like' to describe alien planets, it will become meaningless If you'll excuse me, I'm going to write about something else now. UPDATE: June 26, 2017, 12:23 p.m. EDT This story was updated to include tweets from Zurbuchen related to the Anonymous report. Nigeria's Buhari sends first message since taking sick leave on May 7: presidency sources Posted: 26 Jun 2017 05:54 AM PDT By Felix Onuah ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has delivered an audio message to mark the Islamic Eid al-Fitr holiday, two senior presidency sources said, his first public statement since he left for Britain on medical leave on May 7. Buhari, a Muslim from the north, made the address, calling for peace and unity, in the Hausa language spoken widely in that part of the country. The presidency did not release video footage or photographs of Buhari making the recording heard by Reuters in which the president's voice sounds weak. |

Global sea level rise accelerates since 1990, study shows Posted: 26 Jun 2017 08:07 AM PDT By Alister Doyle OSLO (Reuters) - The rise in global sea levels has accelerated since the 1990s amid rising temperatures, with a thaw of Greenland's ice sheet pouring ever more water into the oceans, scientists said on Monday. Sea levels have risen by about 20 cms in the past century and many scientific studies project a steady acceleration this century as man-made global warming melts more ice on land. The study found that early satellite data had exaggerated the rate of sea level rise in the 1990s, masking the recent acceleration. |

Theme park nightmare takes a happy turn after one attendee falls 25 feet Posted: 25 Jun 2017 11:45 AM PDT Is there any theme park horror story scarier than the one where someone falls out of a high-flying ride? That's exactly what happened at Six Flags Great Escape in Lake George, NY on Saturday — though the incident thankfully had a happy ending. As an unidentified teenage parkgoer dangled 25 feet above the ground, a crowd gathered below to catch her — which they did — once she fell. SEE ALSO: The "Stranger Things" kids keep forgetting to invite us to their fun hangouts A tense video captured and shared on Facebook by Loren Lent, who witnessed the fall, shows us what happened. In his Facebook post, Mr. Lent thanks the Good Samaritan attendees who acted quickly to save the day. He also expresses his surprise that Six Flags seemingly has no rapid response plan for dealing with situations like this. "Girl falling from ride at 6 Flags Great Escape and they have NO means to rescue them," Lent wrote. "Thanks to the guys who banded together to catch her and the guy who climbed the tree to move the branches out of the way." While parkgoers did manage to bring the situation to a safe conclusion before anything truly terrible could happen, Six Flags contends that it does have an action plan for responding to ride malfunctions. "As part of our annual practice an evacuation drill is conducted in partnership with local emergency personnel on this particular ride each spring," a spokesperson told The Washington Post. "Every situation is unique and requires the appropriate time and tools for the evacuation. We are reviewing our internal procedures to ensure the safety and security of our guests and team members." The incident occurred on "Sky Ride," a "mellow-paced" cruise over the park in two-person gondolas. It's not clear how the victim, a 14-year-old visitor from Delaware, slipped free, but local police confirmed that she's now at the nearby Albany Medical Center, in stable condition and with no serious injuries. Posted: 26 Jun 2017 11:17 AM PDT Donald Trump is expected to authorise the sale of $2bn (£1.6bn) worth of surveillance drones to India. The US President met India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time this week – an encounter watched closely by analysts for clues of the depth of ties the new US administration seeks. Both trade and defence ties were heavily bolstered under US President Barack Obama, but policy differences between Mr Trump's administration and New Delhi have thrown the future of the relationship into question. |

AT&T promises massive broadband investment if Trump gives it tax breaks Posted: 25 Jun 2017 09:01 AM PDT There's a tired old trick for internet service providers that want a tax break to continue gouging customers. The ISP will make some vague promise of future broadband investment, in return for immediate tax breaks or approval of an industry deal. On the surface, it sounds good: delivering broadband to rural areas is often uneconomic, so government often wants to cut a deal with private industry to deliver it. But the problem is that internet providers seem to have a really tricky time keeping to their promises, and unexpected roadblocks just happen to always spring up right around the time the investment is meant to happen. That's why AT&T's promise to President Trump that it ill invest $22 billion in new infrastructure -- in return for immediate tax cuts -- is so terribly worrying.
The promise came during a meeting yesterday at the White House. Executives from the telecoms industry made the pilgrimage to kiss the ring, and just like Trump's cabinet, they all had good things to say. Verizon president john Stratton lauded Trump's "focus on U.S. job creation and U.S. leadership in these industries," while AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said that "It's been dizzying the pace that the regulatory playing field has been cleared and been made more clear for companies that invest like ours." In a CNBC interview after the meeting, Stephenson laid out the terms under which his for-profit company would consider investing money in private infrastructure:
It's a kind offer, but it's exactly the kind of vague, details-lacking announcement that AT&T may well never follow through on. DSLReports noted back in 2014 that AT&T has been making the same promise to bring broadband to 100% of people in its regions for the last decade, and has used it as the carrot in a number of mergers and acquisitions. Coincidentally, Charter has just been fined $13 million for failing to meet the terms laid out by New York State to approve a merger. Those terms -- surprise surprise! -- included deploying broadband to 35,000 new homes and upgrading internet speeds to 100Mbps. Neither of those things have been completed. Unfortunately, vague promises of future investment is exactly the kind of thing that President Trump falls for. Two of his most high-profile deals -- keeping Ford and Carrier manufacturing plants in the US -- have quietly fallen apart in the last couple months. It's easy to tout AT&T's promised investment now as the reason to decrease taxes, but unless something changes dramatically, expect to hear these same promises as the reason for further tax cuts four years from now. |

Looking at the Obama family rafting together in Bali makes it seem easier to breathe Posted: 26 Jun 2017 10:47 AM PDT An Obama sighting is a thing to behold these days—and everyone seems to go nuts when they do appear, even if it's just Michelle or Barack introducing rappers at award ceremonies. It's safe to say, the former first family is busy and might not be missing us as much as we miss them. The crew was spotted rafting in Bali, Indonesia, Sunday where they are currently on vacation. It is the first of its kind since Republican Donald Trump became president in January, promising to crack down on illegal immigration. |

Hong Kong activists stage China protest ahead of Xi visit Posted: 25 Jun 2017 04:49 PM PDT Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters on Monday draped a black flag over a statue symbolising the city's return to China by Britain, days before a visit by President Xi Jinping to mark 20 years since the handover. High-profile student campaigner Joshua Wong and a dozen demonstrators attached the black cloth to the giant golden bauhinia flower on Hong Kong's harbourfront in an early morning protest as security tried to stop them climbing on the famous tourist attraction. The sculpture of the bauhinia, which became the emblem of Hong Kong after the handover, was a present to the city from China in 1997 and stands outside the convention centre where Xi will attend anniversary events during a three-day visit starting Thursday. |
