92-year-old woman 'kills son' to avoid being sent to assisted living community Posted: 04 Jul 2018 08:43 AM PDT A 92-year-old woman has been charged with killing her own son because she did not want to go to an assisted living facility, according to police. Arizona woman Anna Mae Blessing has been charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping after police found her 72-year-old son, named by local media as Thomas Blessing, dead on Monday. Authorities say that Ms Blessing had been concerned by her son's plan to move her to the assisted living facility, and that she allegedly confronted him in his bedroom with two pistols in her robe pockets. |

Video shot from a nearby highway showed a massive plume of smoke rising up from the area of the explosions in the town of Tultepec. |

Cherry picking: China looks to replace US farm goods in trade war Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:06 AM PDT Simmering trade tensions between the world's top two economies are set to erupt into a full-blown trade war Friday, with Washington poised to impose new tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods. Beijing has pledged to hit back dollar for dollar, placing a new tax on American goods like cherries, soybeans, autos, pork and whiskey, putting them at a disadvantage to their global rivals. Washington's list is heavy on tech goods, aiming in part to shift supply chains away from China, while Beijing has put politically sensitive US farm goods in the firing line. |
Polar bear kills Canadian man protecting his daughters in rare attack Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:19 AM PDT A young Inuit father has died while protecting his children from a rare polar bear attack in Canada's eastern Arctic territory. Aaron Gibbons, a 31-year-old resident of the Inuit hamlet of Arviat on the southern tip of Nunavut, reportedly encountered the bear on Sentry Island, a popular hunting and fishing spot situated about 10 kilometres away from the hamlet, on the west coast of Hudson Bay. "My qangiaq [nephew] died a hero today," Gibbons' uncle, Gordy Kidlapik, said. "The bear surprised him and his children, so he put himself between them and the bear to let them escape. The bear had no fear." "To hear…his young daughter having to call on CB radio and crying to her grandmother, my aik, immediately after the mauling...we were very helpless. To hear my aik calling out to my qangiaq, asking if he's okay...very heart breaking. His body was brought in at 11:15." Gibbons, who apparently was armed with a rifle that was out of reach at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ecologists warn that polar bear attacks on humans are becoming increasingly common due to climate change driving bears onto the land. Polar bears are increasingly being driven onto the land as Arctic ice melts Credit: AFP Mr Kidlapik also hit out at tour companies who he said were lowering polar bears' fears of humans by offering access to the animals. He warned that tourism was leaving Inuit residents of communities involved "to defend against approaching bears that lost their fear of humans. " However Canadian zoologist Susan Crockford, who studies polar bear activity, said that up close and personal exposure to the animals might not be the reason for the fatal attack. "Nobody can draw any conclusions until we get more information about the age and condition of the bear," said Ms Crockford, an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia. "Very young bears between three and five years old are not only inexperienced hunters, but they also have to compete with older, bigger males who take the seals away from the younger bears and they lose out in the competition game." Nunavut's Department of Environment said it was "working closely" with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and wildlife officers in their investigation. |

Ex-Malaysian PM Najib charged with corruption Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:44 AM PDT Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was formally charged Wednesday with corruption linked to a multi-billion dollar financial scandal that contributed to his shock election defeat less than two months ago. Allegations of massive corruption were a major factor behind the electoral earthquake in May that toppled Najib's long-ruling coalition and ushered in a reformist alliance headed by his 92-year-old former mentor Mahathir Mohamad. Wednesday's court hearing was the latest step in a fast-moving investigation into alleged wrongdoing by Najib, his family and many of his close political and business allies. |

Protests erupt at Bedouin village Israel plans to demolish Posted: 04 Jul 2018 06:46 AM PDT By Ali Sawafta KHAN AL-AHMAR, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian protests broke out on Wednesday at a Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank facing Israeli demolition in what rights groups have condemned as a bid to expand Jewish settlement. Israel moved three bulldozers to the village, Khan al-Ahmar, earlier in the day though demolition had yet to begin, after the military left a land confiscation notice there on Tuesday. |
Bird's nest collectors scour for ways into Thai cave Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:28 AM PDT A team of bird's nest collectors from southern Thailand put their generations-old rock climbing know-how to use on Thursday by scouring a mountainside for openings that could lead to 12 young footballers and their coach trapped inside a flooded cave. The eight men, whose ages range from the 20s to the 50s, are Thai Muslims from Libong island in Trang province where they climb sheer limestone cliffs and explore crevices and caves to collect the edible nests, a delicacy made from solidified bird spit that can go for hundreds of dollars per kilo. "One member in our team was watching (the rescue mission) on television and thought 'how can we help them?'," Abdulrawheep Khunraksa, leader of the team, told AFP. |

Merkel, Orban clash over EU values with anti-migrant wind blowing Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday accused Hungary's right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban of failing to respect "humanity" with his immigration policy, days after she made key border protection concessions to hardliners who have embraced Budapest's anti-migrant stance. In a remarkable clash on European values at a time when feuds over migration threaten the cohesion of the EU, Merkel and Orban each presented themselves as staunch defenders of the bloc's very purpose. "It is about human beings who come to us, and about Europe's basic message. |

Egypt unearths ancient artefacts 'hidden' in WWII Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:55 AM PDT Hundreds of ancient pottery items have been discovered in an Alexandria museum in a hiding place "most probably" created during World War II, Egypt's antiquities ministry said Wednesday. Pots and other receptacles dating back to Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras were discovered "during restoration work" in a garden inside the Greco-Roman museum of Alexandria in northern Egypt, the ministry said in a statement. "These pots were most probably hidden by (British) archaeologist Alan Rowe and... employees in the museum's garden during World War II", Ayman Ashmawy, head of Egyptian antiquities at the ministry, said in the statement. |
Nicaragua human chain calls for Ortega ouster Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:58 PM PDT Thousands of Nicaraguans formed a human chain Wednesday to demand the departure of President Daniel Ortega and an end to months of violence that has left at least 220 people dead. Waving blue and white Nicaraguan flags, the demonstrators lined one of the main roads leading from the capital Managua in the latest high-profile protest against the 72-year-old president. "The people have risen up and we are telling Comandante Ortega to leave, to resign, the people are not afraid of him," said a 27-year old protester with a flag in his hand. |

Malaysia investigates China-backed project links with 1MDB: official Posted: 05 Jul 2018 01:15 AM PDT By Philip Wen KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia is investigating whether part of a loan from a Chinese state-owned bank for projects worth $2.3 billion was used to help repay dues of a scandal-ridden state fund, a finance ministry official told Reuters. The projects to build two pipelines were signed in 2016 by the administration of former Malaysian premier Najib Razak, who courted Chinese investment but was ousted in an election in May amid allegations of corruption at the fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad. Najib, who was charged in connection with the investigation, has denied wrongdoing. |
