Portland stabbings: Police admit attacker could be ‘domestic terrorist’ Posted: 28 May 2017 01:21 AM PDT Portland police have said the man accused of stabbing three men who tried to protect Muslim women from his racist slurs on a train could be a "domestic terrorist". Jeremy Christian, 35, will appear in court this week for slitting the throats of two men and stabbing a third after he verbally attacked two women, one of whom was wearing a hijab. "It's too early to say whether last night's violence was an act of domestic terrorism or a federal hate crime," Renn Cannon, the special agent in charge of the FBI office in Portland, said. |

Australia's 'Ganja Queen' set to leave Bali Posted: 27 May 2017 06:07 AM PDT By Heru Asprihanto DENPASAR, Indonesia (Reuters) - Australian drug convict Schapelle Corby is set to be deported from the Indonesian island of Bali on Saturday night after completing a twelve-and-a-half-year sentence for smuggling marijuana, a case that strained ties between the neighboring countries. Corby has always maintained her innocence, saying she was unaware she was carrying more than 4 kg (8.8 lb) of marijuana in a boogie board bag when she arrived on the resort island in late 2004. The case received huge media attention, with many Australians feeling the former beauty therapist had been harshly treated under Indonesia's strict drug laws, even though Corby could have faced the death penalty for trafficking. |
Civilian deaths a 'fact of life' in war on IS, Pentagon head says Posted: 28 May 2017 10:00 AM PDT Civilian casualties are inevitable in the war against the Islamic State group but the United states is doing "everything humanly possible" to avoid them, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in an interview aired Sunday. A US-led international coalition has been carrying out air strikes against the IS group in Iraq and Syria since 2014, and nongovernmental organizations say the attacks are claiming ever more civilian lives. Some NGOs have blamed the rising civilian death toll on a push by President Donald Trump's administration to accelerate the pace of combat in an effort to "annihilate" the jihadists. |

Two men killed in Oregon train stabbings after anti-Muslim rant Posted: 27 May 2017 03:01 PM PDT A man fatally stabbed two passengers aboard a Portland, Oregon, commuter train after they tried to stop him from harassing two young women who appeared to be Muslim, police said on Saturday. Police identified the assailant, who was arrested soon after the Friday afternoon attack, as Jeremy Joseph Christian of Portland, a 35-year-old convicted felon. A senior researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center, in a blog post, said Christian's Facebook page showed he held "some racist and other extremist beliefs." The attack unfolded hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe a daily religious fast. |

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ‘refuses to hold Ramadan event’ in break with tradition Posted: 27 May 2017 05:41 AM PDT Donald Trump's Secretary of State has refused to host an event to mark Islam's holy month of Ramadan, seemingly breaking with a long bipartisan tradition. Since 1999, Republican and Democratic secretaries of state have nearly always hosted either the reception or an iftar dinner to break the day's fast during Ramadan. Mr Tillerson turned down a request from the State Department's Office of Religion and Global Affairs to host the Eid reception, two unnamed US officials said. |
Car bomber kills 18 in east Afghanistan on first day of Ramadan Posted: 27 May 2017 12:37 AM PDT A suicide car bomber killed 18 people in the eastern Afghan city of Khost on Saturday, the first day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, the interior ministry said. Ministry spokesman Najib Danish told AFP a public bus station was hit by the bombing, but local police said the target were Afghan security forces working with American troops in the province. "A suicide car bomb in Khost province has killed 18 people and wounded six others, including two children," Danish said. |

Thousands protest against Moscow housing resettlement, but numbers fall Posted: 28 May 2017 08:17 AM PDT Thousands of Muscovites protested in the south-west of the Russian capital on Sunday against government plans to resettle millions of citizens from shoddy Soviet-era apartment blocks, but numbers had fallen compared to earlier rallies. A Reuters witness said around 5,000 people attended the latest rally, compared to organizers' estimates of 60,000 at a protest on May 14. Moscow residents are also concerned about the location and quality of the planned new accommodation, a lack of services and infrastructure and about threats the redevelopment may pose to the historic face of the Russian capital. |

Bodies of civilians dumped near Philippines city besieged by Islamists Posted: 28 May 2017 02:38 AM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Bodies of what appeared to be executed civilians were found in a ravine outside a besieged Philippine city on Sunday as a six-day occupation by Islamist rebels fending off a military onslaught took a more sinister turn. The eight dead, most of them shot in the head and some with hands tied behind their backs, were laborers who were stopped by Islamic State-linked militants on the outskirts of Marawi City while trying to flee clashes, according to police. The discovery confirms days of speculation that Maute rebels had killed civilians during a takeover of Marawi, that the military believes is aimed at winning the Maute recognition from the Islamic State as a Southeast Asian affiliate. |

Iran leader slams Saudis as America's 'milking cow' Posted: 27 May 2017 11:22 PM PDT Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched a fierce attack against regional rival Saudi Arabia, saying it was being pumped "like a milking cow" by "infidel" Americans. "These people (the Saudis) appear to believe in the Koran... but in practice they act against its teachings," Khamenei said at a meeting on Saturday to mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan. "But in reality there is no closeness and, as the Americans have said, they are just there to pump them for money like a milking cow, and later slaughter them," he added. |

G7 leaders divided on climate change, closer on trade issues Posted: 27 May 2017 11:36 AM PDT By John Irish and Crispian Balmer TAORMINA, Italy (Reuters) - Under pressure from Group of Seven allies, U.S. President Donald Trump backed a pledge to fight protectionism on Saturday, but refused to endorse a global climate change accord, saying he needed more time to decide. The summit of G7 wealthy nations pitted Trump against the leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan on several issues, with European diplomats frustrated at having to revisit questions they had hoped were long settled. "We are satisfied by how things went," said Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, while acknowledging splits with Washington in some areas. |

The vessel's South Korean captain confirmed the safety of the three South Koreans, the foreign ministry said in the statement. |

Cable companies need to be scared, because cord cutting is here to stay Posted: 27 May 2017 09:00 AM PDT For a few years, cable companies saw cordcutting as another millenial fad that would go the way of the hoverboard. But Netflix's dramatic growth was just the start. Changes in viewing habits are driving a seismic change in the attitude towards cable bundles, and more people than ever are ditching cable boxes altogether.
A new set of results from the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) paints a bleak picture for pay TV providers. Consumer satisfaction with cable and satellite fell this year. It was the only niche in the telecoms industry to see its customers get less happy this year, and satisfaction with wireless providers actually improved. Worse, a vastly increased number of survey respondents said that they're thinking about switching to streaming services. 9% of people polled said they were highly likely to switch this year, versus just 1.9% answering the same question in 2011. "Customer service remains abysmal, and viewers are continuing to switch over to streaming services with much higher customer satisfaction, ACSI chairman Claes Fornell said. "More than half a million subscribers defected from cable and satellite providers during the first quarter – the largest loss in history." What's even more painful for pay TV providers is that customers aren't watching less TV -- they're just watching less cable. A separate study from Nielsen came out today, showing that 90% of viewing time is still spent watching the big screen. In this particular breakup, it's definitely you, not me. |

Chipotle says hackers hit most restaurants in data breach Posted: 26 May 2017 07:49 PM PDT Hackers used malware to steal customer payment data from most of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc's restaurants over a span of three weeks, the company said on Friday, adding to woes at the chain whose sales had just started recovering from a string of food safety lapses in 2015. Chipotle said it did not know how many payment cards or customers were affected by the breach that struck most of its roughly 2,250 restaurants for varying amounts of time between March 24 and April 18, spokesman Chris Arnold said via email. A handful of Canadian restaurants were also hit in the breach, which the company first disclosed on April 25. |
