Tens of Cat Mummies and 100 Cat Statues Found Near Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Posted: 12 Nov 2018 08:26 AM PST Ancient Egyptians seem to have been "cat people," or at least cat mummy people. Researchers have dug up several mummified cats alongside about 100 wooden cat statues in a tomb complex near a pyramid built for the pharaoh Userkaf, who reigned from 2291 B.C. to 2289 B.C., the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced Nov. 10. The burials are located near the site of Saqqara in Egypt. |

Republicans Remain in a Strong Position in State Legislatures Posted: 12 Nov 2018 03:30 AM PST Most of the commentary on the 2018 midterms has focused on the federal level, where Democrats won a majority in the House and Republicans extended their lead in the Senate. When combined with the governor results we can see that Democrats made important gains across the states, but the Republicans remain in a strong position. Going into the 2018 midterm, Republicans had complete control of 26 state governments — meaning that their party held both chambers of the state legislature as well as the governorship. |
Posted: 12 Nov 2018 05:34 PM PST The death toll from wildfires in California has risen to 31, after six more people were found dead in what is expected to be the deadliest fire in state history. The so-called Camp Fire in northern California burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in the town of Paradise - more structures than any other wildfire recorded in California. Its death toll of 29 now equals that of the Griffith Park Fire in 1933, the deadliest wildfire on record in California. |

Summit bears fruit as South Korea flies tangerines to North Posted: 10 Nov 2018 11:42 PM PST The present comes after the North Koreans gave South Korean President Moon Jae-in two tonnes of pricey pine mushrooms after a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang in September. North Korea has pursued nuclear and missile program in defiance of U.N. sanctions and South Korean officials said last week they had tested the mushrooms for radiation after an opposition lawmaker complained. The Jeju tangerines were packed in 20,000 boxes and will be flown to Pyongyang by four C-130 aircraft during multiple flights on Sunday and Monday, the Blue House said in a statement. |

California wildfires: Satellite images reveal devastating scale of disaster across US state Posted: 12 Nov 2018 03:40 AM PST The sheer scale of destruction caused by wildfires in California has been revealed in satellite images released by Nasa. More than 200 people were still missing on Monday in California's deadliest and most destructive blaze on record, which is one of two fires raging in the state. A photo of the blaze, named Camp Fire by officials, was captured by the space agency's Landsat 8 on Thursday 8 November, showing a huge plume of smoke rising from the fire hours after it first broke out. |
Republican dubbed 'Russia's favorite congressman' loses seat after 30 years Posted: 11 Nov 2018 02:26 AM PST Dana Rohrabacher has denied climate change, and is a figure in Robert Mueller's Russia inquiry. The Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher would tell you he's just a regular guy who loves his country and wishes he had more time to go surfing. A guy who, in the early 1990s, got into a drunken arm-wrestling match with a young Vladimir Putin. |
Iraq urges U.S. to consider its position in talks on Iran sanctions Posted: 11 Nov 2018 08:31 AM PST Iraq's president on Sunday urged the United States to consider Baghdad's political and economic position as the countries negotiate on relief for Iraq from Washington's reimposed sanctions against Iran. The United States said on Friday Iraq can continue to import natural gas and energy supplies from Iran for a period of 45 days, so long as Iraq does not pay Iran for imports in U.S. dollars. |
Posted: 12 Nov 2018 05:05 PM PST KUTUPALONG, Bangladesh (AP) — Abul Kalam sits cross-legged on the floor of his tiny mud hut and whispers prayers into a small plastic bottle filled with water, creating what he says is a potion that will cure stomach cramps. "I got these powers in my dreams," he says. "People come to me because I heal them." Kalam is a boidu, or faith healer, and for decades has been treating fellow Rohingya Muslims, first in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state and now in a squalid camp in Bangladesh, where 700,000 Rohingya took refuge last year after escaping a campaign of government violence at home. |

Ukraine separatists elect leaders in defiance of West Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:46 PM PST Separatist leaders in Russian-backed areas of eastern Ukraine on Monday looked set for an expected victory according to preliminary results in polls condemned as illegal by Kiev and Western countries. Elections in the Donetsk and Lugansk "People's Republics", controlled by separatists since breaking away from Ukraine's pro-Western government in 2014, took place after the killing of the rebel Donetsk "president" in a bomb attack in August. "Today we have proved to the world that we can not only fight, not only win on the battlefield but also build a state based on real democratic principles," Denis Pushilin, the 37-year-old acting Donetsk leader who is expected to win, told a crowd during a concert at the main square. |

After receiving constant requests from Model 3 owners who have not been satisfied with opening their car via a credit card-like key or via their smartphone and the Tesla mobile app, Tesla finally released a Model 3 key fob on Friday -- those in the early access program already got their hands on the device last month. |

Edison International , the owner of Southern California Edison Company, slumped 11 percent, leaving its stock market value $5 billion lower since Thursday when the fires broke out. PG&E was deemed responsible for wildfires in 2017 that ravaged wine country north of the San Francisco Bay area and killed 46 people, and this week's fires create new uncertainties for investors in California's utilities. |

China postpones lifting rhino, tiger parts ban Posted: 12 Nov 2018 05:28 AM PST China appeared to backtrack on a controversial decision to lift a ban on trading tiger bones and rhinoceros horns, saying it has been postponed, state media reported Monday. The State Council, China's cabinet, unexpectedly announced last month that it would allow the sale of rhino and tiger products under "special circumstances", a move conservationists likened to signing a death warrant for the endangered species. Permitted uses included scientific research, sales of cultural relics, and "medical research or in healing". |
