Malaysia arrests North Korean over Kim Jong-Nam killing Posted: 18 Feb 2017 03:16 AM PST Malaysian police said Saturday they had arrested a North Korean man over the assassination of Kim Jong-Un's brother, as relations between Pyongyang and Kuala Lumpur nosedived in a battle for his body. A 46-year-old was arrested on Friday evening with documents that identified him as North Korean citizen Ri Jong Chol, a police statement said, making him the first person from the North to be detained over the case. Kim Jong-Nam died after an unidentified liquid was sprayed in his face at Kuala Lumpur international airport on Monday, in an attack Seoul says was carried out by female agents on the orders of Pyongyang. |
Powerful storm pounds Southern and Central California Posted: 18 Feb 2017 04:41 AM PST A powerful Pacific storm blew into Southern and Central California on Friday with wind-driven heavy rains that downed power lines and electrocuted a man, killed a motorist in a submerged car and disrupted hundreds of flights at airports. With the storm feeding on an atmospheric river of moisture stretching far out into the Pacific, precautionary evacuations of homes in some neighborhoods were requested due to the potential for mudslides and debris flows. More than 300 arriving and departing flights were delayed or canceled at Los Angeles International Airport. (AP) See more news-related photo galleries and follow us on Yahoo News Photo Tumblr |

Members of one of the nation's oldest and most powerful institutions chanted prayers and sang hymns as they marched to condemn a "spreading culture of violence". |

Justice John Dixon of the Supreme Court of Victoria convicted Yahoo7 -- co-owned by US internet giant Yahoo and Australia's Seven West Media -- of contempt of court and fined the news organisation Aus$300,000 (US$230,000). |

Why Exercise Is Not Enough to Prevent Weight Gain Posted: 16 Feb 2017 10:54 PM PST Exercise on its own — without also following a healthy diet — isn't enough to help people lose or even just maintain their weight, a recent study suggests. The new results run counter to the idea that the obesity epidemic in the U.S. is caused by a lack of physical activity, said lead study author Lara Dugas, an assistant professor of public health sciences at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. When it comes to figuring out the causes of obesity, "what we really need to look at is what people are eating," Dugas told Live Science. |

We have actively supported this decision and obviously expressed a conviction that this time, failure should not be allowed to take place," Lavrov told reporters. Lavrov's comments came minutes after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin told reporters he was "not at all" happy with the results of Saturday's meeting. |

As a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer seized their passports and questioned a man in the front passenger seat of a taxi that had pulled up to the border in Champlain, New York, four adults and four young children fled the cab and ran to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the other side. RCMP officers watching from the other side helped them up, lifting the younger children and asking a woman, who leaned on her fellow passenger as she walked, if she needed medical care. |
AP Exclusive: If California dam failed, people likely stuck Posted: 17 Feb 2017 01:05 PM PST Communities immediately downstream of California's Lake Oroville dam would not receive adequate warning or time for evacuations if the 770-foot-tall dam itself — rather than its spillways — were to abruptly fail, the state water agency that operates the nation's tallest dam repeatedly advised federal regulators a half-decade ago. |

U.S. shuts high-security labs over concerns about air hose safety Posted: 17 Feb 2017 03:07 PM PST "We have no evidence that anybody has suffered ill health effects from breathing air that came through these hoses," Stephan Monroe, associate director for laboratory science and safety at the CDC, told Reuters. Monroe said he was confident scientists were not exposed to pathogens because the air they breathed passed through HEPA filters. The suits they wear also use positive air pressure to prevent pathogens from entering the suit. |

How to install the genius media app that Apple banned from the App Store Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:00 PM PST What is Kodi and why should one want to install on the iPhone or any other iOS device? It's a versatile media player that's already quite popular with the crowds. You may have used it on other devices back when it was called XBMC. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of application that Apple allows in the App Store, so you can't really enjoy it on iOS devices unless you're willing to jailbreak the phone, or pull off other tricks that would let you sideload the app. If you're looking to install Kodi on the iPhone 7 or any other kind of iOS device without jailbreaking, then you're in luck. It looks like such a method is already available. The method does work, and it's as shady as you can expect. But if you can't go without Kodi in your life, and you don't want to jailbreak the iPhone 7, or can't find a method that jailbreaks the phone, then you could always go for this option. Discovered by Kodi Tips the trick involves navigating to a shady site — just because it's in a language you don't understand — and downloading an app to your iPhone. Once that's done, an error message will appear when you'll try to run Kodi. However, you can fix it by simply choosing to trust the application from the phone's Settings menu. Check out Kodi Tips full instructions if you really want to go through with the procedure. Finally, if all else fails, there's one other type of Kodi install for the iPhone that you can try, which doesn't require a jailbreak either. You have to pretend you're an app developer and use Apple's Xcode to get the app running on your iOS device — Macworld has all the instructions, assuming the method is still available. |

China’s ‘Left Behind’ Children Posted: 17 Feb 2017 11:16 AM PST Millions of Chinese children are being raised by their grandparents in rural China as their parents left to find work in urban areas. While there are no official figures, a recent government report puts the number of "left behind" children at nearly 10 million, though child welfare experts estimate the number to be closer to 60 million. In the case of the Luo family grandparents, who are elderly and poor, they do what they can to meet the basic needs of four children between the ages of 5 and 11. |
Tragic Suicide Case Highlights Mental Health Needs of Refugees Posted: 17 Feb 2017 08:15 AM PST The couple left no real explanation for their suicides, but a recent report on their case in the journal BMJ Case Reports highlights the risks for refugees: Cut off from their homelands and from many of the usual sources of social support, most refugees also lack access to mental health care. It's a problem that persists not only along the Thai-Myanmar border, where decades of conflict have created semi-permanent camp settlements, but also in the Middle East and Europe among Syrians displaced by the civil war in their country. "I often think, 'Could we have said something more or been more proactive somehow and helped her?'" said Gracia Fellmeth, a public health researcher at Oxford University in the U.K. and lead author of the case report published in September 2016. |

Turkey 'no' voters demonised as tight referendum looms Posted: 17 Feb 2017 07:26 AM PST Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his supporters are increasingly demonising voters thinking of rejecting a plan to grant him greater powers in an April referendum, raising fears of a further polarisation of society. Turkey will on April 16 vote in a referendum on constitutional changes to create a presidential system which Erdogan argues is needed for better governance but critics fear will lead to one man rule. Polls are indicating a tight race with approval for the plan by no means a foregone conclusion, opening the way for the kind of no-holds-barred campaign in which Erdogan revels. |
