Police trials in Freddie Gray death to stay in Baltimore: judge

Activist C.D. Witherspoon speaks to protestors during pretrial motions for six police officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray in BaltimoreA Baltimore judge on Thursday denied a request for a change of venue for the trials of six police officers charged in the death of a black man who died from an injury in police custody. The death of Freddie Gray Jr. in April triggered protests, including a day of rioting, and fueled a U.S. debate on police treatment of minorities. Defense lawyers for the officers had argued before Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams that intense publicity made it impossible to hold a fair trial in Baltimore.

Police focus on seizing guns to combat Chicago gang murders

Cook County Sheriff police officer points gun at man who walked up to him while officers were conducting unrelated street stop in Austin neighborhood in Chicago, IllinoisThe focus on rounding up illegal guns, rather than low-level drug offenders, is an increasing priority for law enforcement in Chicago as murders - almost all of them with firearms and mostly related to gangs - have risen to 304 so far this year, compared with 258 in the same period last year. Of the 10 biggest U.S. cities, only Philadelphia's murder rate outstrips Chicago's. According to 2013 data, there were 15.2 murders per 100,000 people in Chicago, compared with an average of 7.5 per 100,000 people in all cities with populations higher than 1 million. Police say fragmented drug-dealing gangs, a high bar for charging felons, and insufficiently tough sentences for illegal gun possession have made it difficult to combat homicides in Chicago.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gives a thumbs on the stage at an event to discuss the minimum wage at the Javitz Convention Center in New YorkBy Katie Reilly NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday he wants the state to raise its minimum wage over the next six years to $15 an hour, the highest of any U.S. state. The proposal calls for the minimum wage in New York City to rise to $15 an hour at the end of 2018 and take effect statewide in July 2021, mirroring a state order signed on Thursday that applies only to the fast-food industry. It would mark a significant hike from New York state's current hourly minimum wage of $8.75, which will increase to $9 an hour on Dec. 31, and faced immediate opposition from business groups that called the hike unrealistic.

Al Qaeda Leader Al-Zawahiri Declares War on ISIS 'Caliph' Al-BaghdadiJust ahead of the fourteenth anniversary of al Qaeda's 9/11 attacks on the U.S., the leader of the terrorist group took aim in an angry speech at a mortal enemy -- but not American "crusaders" this time. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian doctor who replaced Osama bin Laden as the head of al Qaeda four years ago, in a new audio message accused ISIS top leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of "sedition" and insisted the Iraqi terrorist recluse was not the leader of all Muslims and militant jihad as "caliph" of the Islamic State, as al-Baghdadi had claimed 14 months ago in a Mosul mosque. "It's pretty interesting," said former National Counterterrorism Center Director Matthew Olsen.
