Apple asks judge to vacate order on locked iPhone Posted: 25 Feb 2016 12:32 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — Apple Inc. on Thursday asked a federal magistrate to reverse her order that the company help the FBI hack into a locked iPhone, accusing the federal government of seeking "dangerous power" through the courts and of promoting a "boundless" interpretation of the law.

Asked if the White House was disappointed by Sandoval's decision, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a briefing, "He's obviously entitled to make decisions about his own career." Sandoval's name surfaced as a possible nominee on Wednesday but Senate Republicans quickly said they still would not act on any Obama nominee to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the Feb. 13 death of long-serving conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

"I wouldn't advise that for a number of reasons," Kerry told the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee at a hearing on the State Department's budget. Many lawmakers have been pushing to renew the ISA quickly, to send a message to Tehran that Congress is still taking a hard line over its nuclear program, missile development and human rights record.

Apple unlocking case not 'trailblazer' for legal precedent: FBI chief Posted: 25 Feb 2016 07:36 AM PST By Dustin Volz WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The case involving a court order demanding Apple help the FBI unlock the iPhone linked to one of the San Bernardino shooters is "unlikely to be a trailblazer" for setting a legal precedent in future cases, FBI Director James Comey told a congressional panel Thursday. While the case "will be instructive for other courts," broader policy questions about reasonable law enforcement access to encrypted data will likely need to be resolved by Congress and others, Comey said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking Apple's help in accessing a county-owned iPhone 5C used by Syed Rizwan Farook, who along with his wife went on a shooting rampage in December that killed 14 and wounded 22.
