US Supreme Court considers bank's liability for attacks Posted: 11 Oct 2017 03:54 PM PDT The US Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday in a case pitting the Arab Bank against victims of militant attacks that were allegedly enabled by the financial institution. At issue is whether the Alien Tort Statute (ATS), a law that gives American courts jurisdiction in civil lawsuits filed by foreign nationals over acts violating international law or US treaties, can be applied to the bank, and corporations in general. Some 6,000 plaintiffs who were victims of attacks in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza claim the bank violated international law and by allowing the transfer of money used to fund the violence to accounts held by leaders of Hamas, which the US considers a terrorist group. |

California wildfires kill 21 and create boiling river of wine as they burn through vineyards Posted: 11 Oct 2017 03:46 PM PDT Authorities fear the death toll from California's wild fires could rise rapidly from 21, as thousands of firefighters battle blazes engulfing the state's wine country. Hundreds of people have been reported missing in fires that have destroyed more than 3500 homes and businesses. In places the damage to the region's wineries has been so devastating that a boiling river of wine was spotted at the Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa flowing beneath the smouldering ground where barrels have been incinerated. Three days after the first fires were reported, the blazes continue to multiply in number. On Wednesday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said 22 wildfires were burning, up from 17 a day earlier. Ken Pimlott, department chief, said the fires had burned through 265 square miles of ground parched from years of drought. The main building at Paras Vinyards burns in Napa Credit: AFP "We are literally looking at explosive vegetation," he said. "It is very dynamic. These fires are changing by the minute in many areas." Entire residential neighbourhoods have been reduced to blackened rubble in parts of northern California as smoke cloaks the land and turns the sky orange. The dead include a married couple of 75 years, who were found in the charred remains of their home. Mike Rippey said his brother discovered the bodies of his 100-year-old father Charles, who appeared to be heading to the room of his 98-year-old mother Sara, when he was overcome by smoke and flames. The couple met in primary school in Wisconin and had been together ever since. Mr Rippey, 71, said he and his four siblings could not imagine either parent living alone. "We knew there's no way they would ever be happy, whoever was the last one. So they went together, and that's the way it worked," he said. Drone captures the aftermath of wildfires in Santa Rosa 01:16 Authorities ordered more evacuations for parts of Sonoma Valley on Wednesday after a blaze grew to 44 miles across. The vast scale of the fires, problematic communications and chaotic evacuations meant the death toll would likely rise, according to Robert Giordano, Sonoma County sheriff. "The devastation is enormous," he said. "We can't even get into most areas. I would expect the number to go up." Burned wine barrels are seen at a destroyed Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa in California Credit: AFP Jerry Brown, the governor, said 8000 firefighters had been deployed with more resources arriving form neighbouring states. "We have had big fires in the past. This is one of the biggest, most serious, and it's not over," he said, adding that climate change would make such disasters more common in the future. Dry, windy weather is forecast for the next 24 hours, offering little in the way of respite. Gusts of up to 50 miles per hour and 10 percent humidity are expected throughout the rest of Wednesday and Thursday. |

Equifax says systems not compromised in latest cyber scare Posted: 12 Oct 2017 02:59 PM PDT By John McCrank NEW YORK (Reuters) - Equifax Inc said on Thursday that one of its third-party vendors had been running malicious code on one its web pages, but that the credit reporting agency was not the subject of another cyber attack and its systems were not compromised. Equifax had said earlier it took the affected web page offline "out of an abundance of caution" following a report by the technology news website Ars Technica that the company's website may have been hacked. Atlanta-based Equifax disclosed a little over a month ago that cyber criminals had breached its systems between mid-May and late July and stolen the sensitive information of 145.5 million people. |

Hamas, Fatah sign deal on Palestinian reconciliation Posted: 12 Oct 2017 11:50 AM PDT Rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed an agreement Thursday on ending a decade-long split following talks mediated by Egypt in Cairo, with president Mahmud Abbas calling it a "final" accord. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the deal, saying it would make peace with his country "much harder to achieve". Under the agreement, the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) is to resume full control of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip by December 1, according to a statement from Egypt's government. |

Donald Trump signs executive order to side-step Obamacare rules Posted: 12 Oct 2017 09:47 AM PDT Donald Trump has signed an executive order to make it easier for Americans to buy bare-bones health insurance plans and circumvent Obamacare rules — but the action faces possible legal challenges. Frustrated by the failure of a Republican-controlled Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare, Mr Trump issued the order as part of an effort to unravel the 2010 law without action by legislators. "We've been hearing about the disaster of Obamacare for so long", as well as the need to repeal it, Mr Trump said at the White House alongside Republican Senator Rand Paul, Vice President Mike Pence and a couple other members of Congress. |

The actress, who had been named in the New York Times' initial Oct. 5 exposé as having reached a settlement with Weinstein in 1997, slammed Amazon chief Jeff Bezos in a string of explosive tweets for allegedly ignoring her claims, despite her telling Bezos' Amazon Studios head "over and over" that the rape had indeed occurred. |

Hong Kong leader says Asian financial hub faces 'grave' challenges Posted: 11 Oct 2017 02:41 AM PDT By Donny Kwok and James Pomfret HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam warned in her maiden policy speech on Wednesday that the city faced "grave" challenges and must develop a more diversified economy, unveiling a mix of housing and tax relief policies to raise competitiveness. Hong Kong, one of the world's costliest cities, has battled rising income inequality, the slow implementation of marquee public projects, political tensions with its mainland China and a slide in its competitiveness. "In the face of competition from other economies as well as the rise of protectionism in recent years, Hong Kong is facing increasingly grave challenges. |

Locals warned to stay away as Japanese volcano erupts Posted: 10 Oct 2017 11:27 PM PDT Mount Shinmoedake in southern Japan erupted for the first time in six years Wednesday, shooting a plume of ash several hundred metres into the air and sparking warnings to local residents. People were ordered to stay away from the volcano after it rumbled to life at 5:34 am (2034 GMT Tuesday) as Japan's Meteorological Agency said air blasts caused by the eruption could shatter windows. "The ash plume reached a height of 300 metres (1,000 feet) when the volcano erupted," an agency official told AFP, adding that the eruption would continue and "become more active". |
Somehow this guy accidentally kept his neighbour's cat hostage for five days Posted: 11 Oct 2017 10:48 PM PDT Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish your pet from others that look like it. It's something that happened to one New Zealander, although it took them five days to realise they had accidentally kept their neighbour's cat hostage. Oops. SEE ALSO: Get your fluffy cat snuggles without the cat The debacle was chronicled by Clarke Gayford on Twitter, posting two different pictures of cats on Tuesday. One cat belonged to his friend, and had just walked in. The other, was the kidnapped cat. a mate spent $130 at vet on his cat then had to lock it in his bedroom for 5 days recovery, and JUST NOW HIS ACTUAL CAT WALKED IN pic.twitter.com/TyeiFfARJK — Clarke Gayford (@NZClarke) October 10, 2017 To add to the problem, the neighbour had been looking for her missing cat. He just told me a neighbour had come looking for her missing black cat and he said 'Na, sorry just my cat in here!'I actually snort laughed — Clarke Gayford (@NZClarke) October 10, 2017 And to make matters worse, Gayford's friend had fed the kidnapped cat anti-anxiety medication, on the prescription of a vet. OMG so he told vet it did seem to be acting strange so vet prescribed it anti-anxiety meds. MY MATE HAS KIDNAPPED AND BEEN DRUGING A KITTEH! pic.twitter.com/CkbVqWYgiA — Clarke Gayford (@NZClarke) October 10, 2017 Eventually, the mistake had been atoned, and fortunately the neighbour was cool about the whole catnapping thing. "Just thought I'd let you know, pussy doesn't seem to have been traumatized by his confinement at your house," a text message reads. And now this from neighbour...... and um well of course your cat is chilled out MY MATE HAS BEEN FEEDING YOUR CAT DRUGS!! pic.twitter.com/vIoJbTLajV — Clarke Gayford (@NZClarke) October 10, 2017 Of course, this case of mistaken kitty is no isolated incident, with other people sharing stories of pet mix-ups. It's too damn easy to mess it up. One time our dog was in the street covered in mud. Dragged him inside, washed him, dried him, then discovered our actual dog in his kennel. — Kate McDermott (@MsKateMcD) October 10, 2017 Neighbour brought in our cat & said sorry she had just run over him. Hours later, my daughter screamed. OUR cat was at the top of the stairs — TheSaltySeaCat (@TheSaltySeaCat) October 11, 2017 I rescued MY dog from the pound. Three days later I had two dogs with identical markings. — Lady Sandy Beach (@atsandybeach) October 11, 2017 WATCH: Ever wonder what it'd sound like if animals could talk? |

Exclusive: U.S. warship sails near islands Beijing claims in South China Sea - U.S. officials Posted: 11 Oct 2017 03:06 AM PDT By Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy destroyer sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on Tuesday, three U.S. officials told Reuters, prompting anger in Beijing, even as President Donald Trump's administration seeks Chinese cooperation in reining in North Korea's missile and nuclear programs. The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters. |
