Northam Tells Staff He Won’t Resign over Racist Yearbook Photo Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:53 PM PST During a cabinet meeting Friday afternoon, Virginia governor Ralph Northam told his staff that he will not resign despite the overwhelming condemnation he's received from fellow Democrats this week following the emergence of a racist photo on his 1984 medical-school-yearbook page, according to the Associated Press. The yearbook photo, which depicts one man in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan uniform, was first published on Friday by the right-wing website Big League Politics. Immediately following its publication, Northam admitted to appearing in the photo and apologized for the harm it caused his constituents. Then, during a Saturday afternoon press conference, Northam backtracked, denying that he appeared in the photo but admitting to darkening his face on another occasion while he was in college. |

Seven jailed for life over Tunisian museum, hotel massacres Posted: 09 Feb 2019 12:27 PM PST A Tunisian court jailed seven people for life on Saturday for their involvement in two deadly militant attacks in 2015, one on a museum in Tunis and the other on a hotel in a Mediterranean resort. Other defendants received jail sentences ranging from 16 years to six months, state news agency TAP quoted court spokesman Soufiane Sliti as saying. The assault on the Bardo National Museum left 21 people dead, while 38 were killed in the beach resort of Sousse, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of the capital. |

Look at this colossal storm on Uranus Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:56 AM PST Uranus, a huge gaseous world some 1.8 billion miles from the sun, is quite stormy. NASA's long-lived Hubble telescope spotted a notable storm churning inside the planet's blue-green atmosphere, and the space agency posted the image online Thursday. The entirety of Uranus' north pole is engulfed by a "vast bright stormy cloud cap," wrote NASA. "Scientists believe this new feature is a result of Uranus' unique rotation," added NASA, noting that, unlike the other planets in our solar system, Uranus is tipped on its side. This leaves the sun shining non-stop onto its north pole during its long summer, likely resulting in widespread atmospheric changes. Uranus as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. Image: nasa Just beneath the massive polar storm is a smaller, compact white cloud made of the common gas methane, notes NASA. The space agency also spotted a new storm brewing on Neptune. It's the dark spot near the top of the planet and is somewhat mysterious, as these massive dark storms have been observed appearing and then vanishing relatively quickly. SEE ALSO: Trump fails to block NASA's carbon sleuth from going to space "The feature is the fourth and latest mysterious dark vortex captured by Hubble since 1993," said NASA. Neptune as seen in November 2018. Image: nasa NASA plans to continue monitoring weather on these frigid, far-off gas giants to better understand the extraterrestrial storms. "Just as meteorologists cannot predict the weather on Earth by studying a few snapshots, astronomers cannot track atmospheric trends on solar system planets without regularly repeated observations," the space agency wrote. "Astronomers hope that Hubble's long-term monitoring of the outer planets will help them unravel the mysteries that still persist about these faraway worlds." GOP Rep. Questions Dems’ Commitment to Stopping Gun Violence at Whitaker Hearing Posted: 08 Feb 2019 10:10 AM PST Representative John Ratcliffe (R., Texas) questioned his Democratic colleagues' commitment to preventing gun violence on Friday, citing their lack of questions pertaining to the issue during acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker's appearance before the House Judiciary Committee. "Earlier this week my colleagues on the other side of the aisle indicated they had a great desire to reduce gun violence in this country. In fact we had an eight-hour hearing with six witnesses that talked about the need to reduce gun violence in this country," Ratcliffe said. |
Venezuela's Guaido won't rule out authorizing US intervention Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:56 PM PST Venezuela's self-proclaimed acting president Juan Guaido refused to rule out Friday the possibility of authorizing United States intervention to help force President Nicolas Maduro from power and alleviate a humanitarian crisis. Under Maduro's stewardship, oil-rich Venezuela's economy has collapsed leaving the country wracked by hyperinflation, recession and shortages of basic necessities such as food and medicine. "We're going to do everything that has a lower social cost, that generates governability and stability to deal with the emergency," said Guaido, 35. |

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to visit to Morocco despite Duchess being seven-months pregnant Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:07 AM PST The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will make a surprise three-day trip to Morocco later this month - despite Meghan being seven months pregnant. The royal couple will travel to the North African country on February 23 at the request of the British Government "to highlight the vital role girls' education and youth empowerment is playing" following the 2010 Arab Spring. The trip is believed to have been hastily arranged after a regional visit was cancelled at the last minute. A royal aide said the couple were following official NHS guidance which advises that women can fly until they are 37 weeks pregnant, adding: "The Duchess feels well and able to fly. Most airlines permit women to fly up until approximately the last month of their pregnancy. "We announced the baby is due in the spring and this visit is in February." They will fly on a commercial airline but Kensington Palace declined to comment on whether a doctor will accompany them. The Duke and Duchess are expected meet Morocco's ruler King Mohammed VI, the country's prime minister Saad-Eddine El Othmani, and visit major tourist attractions. On Sunday, The Duke will watch England play France in the Six Nations rugby championship at Twickenham as yet more revelations are expected from Meghan's family. Her father Thomas Markle is expected to give an interview to a Sunday newspaper after five of the Duchess's friends gave interviews to People magazine in the US claiming her texts and calls to him had gone unanswered. On Friday, Meghan's half-brother Thomas Markle Jnr gave an interview to Germany's Bund magazine claiming their father "just wants to hear from his daughter and have her back in her life". It comes after their half-sister Samantha Markle launched Twitter tirade against "wealthy narcissist" Meghan describing the People article as "total bulls----" and "fake news". Royal watchers have questioned the wisdom of responding to negative headlines, fearing it could only fuel the flames of bad publicity - and open the door to more media appearances by the Markles. |
Andromeda galaxy will deliver a 'glancing blow' to our Milky Way later than expected Posted: 09 Feb 2019 07:51 AM PST Astronomers have long suspected that the colossal Andromeda galaxy would, in billions years, collide with our humble Milky Way. The collision was forecast to happen in some 3.9 billion years. But after astronomers analyzed new data captured by the European Space Agency's star-surveying satellite Gaia, they now put the imminent date at 4.5 billion years — so 600 million years later than initially expected. The event, detailed in The Astrophysical Journal, is characterized as a "swipe" rather than a direct collision. The end result would be a merger of the galaxies into one, monstrous galaxy. "This finding is crucial to our understanding of how galaxies evolve and interact," Timo Prusti, ESA Gaia Project Scientist who had no role in the study, said in a statement. The Gaia satellite measured star motion in the Andromeda galaxy. Image: ESA/Gaia (star motions); NASA/Galex (background image); R. van der Marel, M. Fardal, J. Sahlmann (STScI) While of immense importance to our corner of the universe, this event will be of little importance to Earth: By then, our aging sun will have grown brighter and likely have boiled the oceans while burning away our protective atmosphere. To arrive at their conclusions about the future galactic meeting, scientists observed how stars moved within two "nearby" galaxies that are passing each other — the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies — to forecast how Andromeda will ultimately travel through intergalactic space. SEE ALSO: Pancakes in space? No that's just the mysterious MU69 "We combed through the Gaia data to identify thousands of individual stars in both galaxies, and studied how these stars moved within their galactic homes," said study coauthor Mark Fardal in a statement. "While Gaia primarily aims to study the Milky Way, it's powerful enough to spot especially massive and bright stars within nearby star-forming regions – even in galaxies beyond our own." Galactic trajectories. Image: E. Patel, G. Besla (University of Arizona), R. van der Marel (STScI) When Andromeda does eventually meet, or "swipe," the Milky Way, it doesn't mean chaos and destruction will ensue. "That event will be less dramatic than it sounds, however," noted The New Times cosmos reporter Dennis Overbye. "Because galaxies are mostly empty space, they will pass through each other like ghosts." WATCH: Ever wonder how the universe might end? |

Democrats float 'Green New Deal' to end fossil fuel era Posted: 07 Feb 2019 06:40 PM PST The document, unveiled by rising political star Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey, marks the first formal attempt by lawmakers to define potential legislation to create big government-led investments in clean energy and infrastructure to transition the U.S. economy away from fossil fuels. The plan, which takes the form of a non-binding congressional resolution, outlines some of the most aggressive climate goals ever put forward by Democratic lawmakers and clashes dramatically with the Trump administration's efforts to advance domestic oil, gas and coal production by rolling back environmental protections. The name, Green New Deal, references the New Deal of the 1930s that President Franklin Roosevelt implemented to aid Americans suffering in the Great Depression by embarking on huge government-led infrastructure projects. |
Humbled Goldman Sachs still faces questions on 1MDB Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:15 PM PST Goldman Sachs's decision to potentially cut bonuses for top executives over the 1MDB scandal reflects an acknowledgement at shareholder and public outrage over the debacle. The prestigious investment bank announced last week that it could withhold millions of dollars in bonuses to former Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and two other retired executives depending on the outcome of ongoing probes into the Malaysian fund. Beyond the bonuses, Goldman also said it could claw back compensation from current chief executive David Solomon and two other current senior executives, president John Waldron and chief financial officer Stephen Scherr. |

Exclusive: U.S. in direct contact with Venezuelan military, urging defections - source Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:36 PM PST The Trump administration expects further military defections from Maduro's side, the official told Reuters in an interview, despite only a few senior officers having done so since opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president last month, earning the recognition of the United States and dozens of other countries. "We're still having conversations with members of the former Maduro regime, with military members, although those conversations are very, very limited." The official declined to provide details on the discussions or the level at which they are being held, and it was unclear whether such contacts could create cracks in the Venezuelan socialist leader's support from the military, which is pivotal to his grip on power. With the Venezuelan military still apparently loyal to Maduro, a source in Washington close to the opposition expressed doubts whether the Trump administration has laid enough groundwork to spur a wider mutiny in the ranks where many officers are suspected of benefiting from corruption and drug trafficking. |

Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:19 AM PST Desperate Venezuelans have reportedly been driven to sell their hair at the Colombian border as their troubled nation slips further into political crisis. Trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived in the Colombian border city of Cucuta on Thursday after the country's embattled president, Nicolas Maduro, ordered his military to barricade a bridge between the two nations with a tanker and two containers. President Maduro, who denies a humanitarian crisis exists and has said Venezuela is not a nation of "beggars", rejected the aid convoy as a "political show". |

On Thursday, as promised in the teasers that Subaru published last week, the 2020 Legacy made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show with new tech and an updated collection of powertrain options. Brazil evacuates towns near Vale, ArcelorMittal dams on fears of collapse Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:58 AM PST The collapse two weeks ago unleashed an avalanche of mud that engulfed nearby buildings and farms, killing an estimated 300 people in Brazil's deadliest mining disaster. As evidence mounted that Vale missed warnings of trouble at the dam in the town of Brumadinho, pressure has risen on the firm and other mining companies to bolster safety measures to avoid a recurrence. ArcelorMittal shares dropped nearly 5 percent at 19.26 euros. |

The Mumbai-based manufacturer has been badly hit by falling demand for luxury cars in China, as well as uncertainty over Brexit and rising debt.
