Mexico earthquake: Magnitude 6.9 seismic tremor hits Pacific coast at Guatemala border Posted: 14 Jun 2017 01:54 AM PDT At least one person has died after a very powerful but deep earthquake struck the border between Mexico and Guatemala, sending shockwaves that could be felt by around 12 million people across neighbouring countries. The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.9, and there were reports of landslides, power cuts, damage to homes and injuries across Guatemala and Mexico. One man was killed when a Catholic church collapsed in San Sebastian, in Guatemala's Retalhuleu province, emergency services officials said. |

Correction: Shipwreck Discovery story Posted: 14 Jun 2017 12:52 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a story and photo captions June 13 about the discovery of a shipwreck, The Associated Press reported erroneously the rank of Todd Sokalzuk. He is a Rear Admiral, not a Commander. Also, the story should have made it clear that the Coast Guard could not assign blame to the crash that caused the ship to sink. |

James Hodgkinson dead: Virginia shooter dies after opening fire on Republicans Posted: 14 Jun 2017 08:11 AM PDT The suspect in the Virginia shooting case has been identified by multiple US media sources as a 66-year-old from Illinois. The Post quoted Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St Louis, who said that he became friendly with Mr Hodgkinson during their work in Iowa on Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign. Mr Orear said Mr Hodgkinson was "a passionate progressive" and showed no signs of violence or malice toward others, the newspaper said. |

Iran urges Gulf peace mechanism, says Saudi backing militants Posted: 13 Jun 2017 07:06 AM PDT Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday called for a permanent mechanism in the Gulf to resolve crises like the blockade against Qatar by Saudi Arabia and its allies. Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of an annual peace mediation in Oslo, Zarif also said Saudi Arabia supported militants inside Iran. "It is absolutely imperative for our region not to only to resolve this particular conflict or dispute between our southern neighbours in the Persian Gulf through dialogue but in fact establish a permanent mechanism for consultation, conversation and conflict resolution in our region," Zarif said. |
True hero sneaks grandma's dog into hospital by disguising it as a baby Posted: 13 Jun 2017 08:43 AM PDT A good granddaughter has to do what she has to do, even if that means breaking a hospital's 'no pets' rule. SEE ALSO: Carry your kitty in this adorable kangaroo pouch hoodie A 21-year-old veterinarian technician's grandma was laid up in a hospital and really wanted to see her dog, despite the facility's reluctance to let puppers roam the halls. And so, the diligent granddaughter, Twitter's HennickShelby, determined that the best way to sneak a cute doggo into her grandmother's hospital room is to disguise it as a baby. And so that's just what she did. She wrapped the canine up like a sleeping babe, put it on her shoulder, and snuck it right into her grateful grandma. That was the first super smart thing she did. The second super smart thing she did was share the feat on Twitter so that we could all see. My grandma is in the hospital right now and wanted to see her dog. So I made it look like I was carrying a baby and we made it ❤ pic.twitter.com/oKxNBlJEEL — Shelbae (@HennickShelby) June 11, 2017 Kudos to this dog, who clearly kept its cool on the elevator ride up. What if the Google Pixel 2 looked like this? Posted: 14 Jun 2017 06:18 AM PDT The first revealing Google Pixel 2 rumor arrived a few days ago, with the news that HTC might not be making the Google Pixel 2 XL, as was initially expected. Instead, that job went to LG, and there's evidence that Google's Taimen is indeed an LG device — though nobody is calling it Pixel 2 XL at the moment. We'll remind you that Taimen is the codename of one of the three devices Google was working on, one that described a device even bigger than the original Pixel XL. On top of that, a benchmark listing revealed the Google Pixel 2 XL will have the same 18:9 ratio seen in 2017 handsets that feature all-screen designs, such as the Galaxy S8 and the LG G6.
So what if the Google Pixel 2 looks like this: This isn't a leak but a render posted by a designer on Google+ all the way back in February. Yes, Google+ still exist and people still use it. Deepal Pallav Suthar imagined a Google Pixel 2 that's somewhat similar to its predecessor. However, the phone does sport a full-screen design and a dual lens camera on the back. A fingerprint sensor is also present on the back, and the ugliest thing about the Google Pixel is still there — that strange mix of metal and glass on the rear. The renders show various color options for the handset and suggest that Google would retain the 3.5mm headphone jack for at least one more year. Google confirmed earlier this year that it'll launch the new Pixel phones at some point in the fall, roughly a year after the first-gen Pixels hit stores. Google also said that the Pixel 2 will still be just as expensive as the first generation. |

Joe Scarborough blasts ‘un-American’ fawning Trump Cabinet Posted: 13 Jun 2017 08:18 AM PDT Joe Scarborough ripped into President Trump and his Cabinet on Tuesday, one day after a video of Trump prompting officials to speak up and praise him during a meeting caught fire. "'Sick' is the word," the co-host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" said of the meeting. Scarborough wasn't the only one who questioned the event — the Trump administration's first full Cabinet meeting. |

A staunch figure of the ruling party, Attorney General Luisa Ortega, 59, is the highest public official to break ranks with Maduro over the country's deadly political crisis. |

Indian tycoon Mallya denies charges at London extradition hearing Posted: 13 Jun 2017 06:19 AM PDT Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya on Tuesday insisted he was innocent as he appeared at a court in London over an extradition request from India, where he is accused of fraud. "I deny all allegations that have been made and I will continue to deny them," the flamboyant financier, who co-owns Formula One team Force India, said outside the court. Ben Watson, Mallya's representative, told the preliminary hearing that his client could face a second extradition request, including a "separate set of charges". |

Cox’s new ‘Panoramic Wi-Fi Router’ is everything wrong with cable companies Posted: 13 Jun 2017 04:04 PM PDT In a breathless press release this morning, Cox announced nationwide availability of its new Panoramic Wi-Fi Router. In theory, this should be a good thing: Cox's new magic internet box is the fastest and best Wi-Fi router the company has ever offered, which means more customers should now be getting faster and more consistent internet. But for some reason, Cox is still feeling the need to push the router on customers with a bunch of fake buzzwords and half-truths, ultimately trying to persuade customers who probably don't know better that they need to rent a substandard device for an obscene monthly price, or face the consequences.
First, let's talk about the router itself. There aren't a ton of details available on Cox's website, but it's some kind of combo modem/router that combines the DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with a 3x3 MIMO, 802.11ac Wi-Fi access point. Those specs are respectable, and probably enough for most people, but they were also standard on good Wi-Fi routers available in 2012. Right now, an equivalent (or better -- Cox's website doesn't have a full list of specs) router will run you about $90. But you wouldn't know it from reading Cox's marketing material. Apparently, the Panoramic Router is "Wi-Fi reimagined to blanket your home. Person to person. Device to device. Room to room. It's a next generation WiFi experience, optimized specifically for each residence." The parts of that which aren't meaningless are not really true. There is "next-gen Wi-Fi" available right now: it's technology like Wave 2 4x4 MU-MIMO, which allows simultaneous connections to multiple clients with speeds up to 2.5Gbps, rather than the 1.3Mbps that Cox's access point is probably capable of. It's not just the over-hyped hardware that's bad here, either. The Panoramic Router costs $10 a month to rent, and there's no option to buy. That means you're spending $120 a year for the privilege of having Wi-Fi at home, and over the course of a couple years, you're going to be paying far, far more than you should for a slowly-ageing router. But don't worry! Cox has an answer for why you need to rent, rather than buy, your modem: "The Panoramic WiFi Modem is only available for a monthly rental fee to our customers. This ensures that we have the capability to upgrade the software and firmware on these devices to add functionality and protect and manage devices connected to our network." You know who else has the capability to upgrade the software and firmware on devices on a regular basis? Every single other consumer electronics company out there. Apple has no problem upgrading two-year-old iPhones with the latest version of iOS, even though they're owned and not rented. Ubiquiti, the company that makes my home Wi-Fi system, pushes out firmware upgrades twice a week. To be clear: this isn't a problem that's unique to Cox, but rather a much bigger pattern of deceptive behaviour that cable companies across the nation engage in. The cable companies know that most people are lazy and unmotivated when it comes to home networks, so they've worked out that they can take any $100 piece of hardware, dress it up with the cutting-edge features of 2012, and rent it to you for $120 (plus taxes!) every year. This isn't news. It's just depressing that it happens with such brazen consistency. |
Sessions repeatedly says ‘I do not recall’ during line of questioning Posted: 13 Jun 2017 03:22 PM PDT |
Posted: 14 Jun 2017 05:59 AM PDT The FBI is probing the motives of a man who opened fire on a group of Republican congressmen as they were practising for a charity baseball game against a team of Democrats – an apparently deliberate attack on some of the most powerful politicians in the country. The suspected gunman – identified as James Hodgkinson – was wounded after a firefight with police, before dying in hospital from his injuries. Congressman Steve Scalise, an ally of President Trump and the Republican Whip in the House, was shot in the hip. |
