Kurdish official calls on US to stop Turkish offensive Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:24 AM PST A senior Kurdish official on Saturday urged the United States to stop Turkey launching an offensive against Kurdish areas in northern Syria, after Washington announced the withdrawal of American troops. The US has for years supported the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State group in Syria, as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition. |

Canada to press allies on bid to free detainees in China: Ottawa Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:25 AM PST Freeland spoke a day after the United States joined Canada in calling on Beijing to release the pair, who were held after Canadian authorities arrested a senior Chinese executive on a U.S. extradition warrant. "I will continue in the coming days, along with Canada's ambassadors around the world, to be speaking with foreign counterparts about this issue," Freeland told reporters on a conference call. "Our ambassadors ... will be speaking directly in an organized effort with their counterparts." As well as the United States, Britain and the European Union have also expressed support for Canada. |

U.S. envoy in fight against Islamic State quits after Syria pullout Posted: 22 Dec 2018 01:37 PM PST Brett McGurk, U.S. special presidential envoy for the global coalition to defeat the militant group, submitted his resignation effective Dec. 31 to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday, a State Department official said. In an abrupt policy shift, Trump announced on Wednesday that Washington would withdraw the roughly 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria, upending a pillar of American policy in the Middle East and alarming U.S. allies. The decision was followed on Thursday by the surprise departure of U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, who in a resignation letter to Trump laid bare the growing divide between the two over foreign policy. |

Oil market likely to rebalance early 2019: OPEC ministers Posted: 23 Dec 2018 05:52 AM PST Oil ministers from leading OPEC nations said Sunday they expect prices will arrest their recent slide and rebalance early next year, when a deal on new production cuts takes effect. Oil prices have shed more than 36 percent since early October to trade at $54 (47 euros) per barrel, due to fears of oversupply and weak global demand. "Based on available figures, we have around 26 million barrels of surplus ... compared to 340 million barrels in early 2017," Mazrouei told a press conference in Kuwait City. |

Google now has a fun ‘Seinfeld’ themed Easter egg you should try Posted: 23 Dec 2018 11:45 AM PST Google loves a good Easter egg, and with the holiday season in full swing, the search giant resurrected a fun little surprise that you may remember from previous years. If you open up a new tab in your web browser of choice -- it doesn't have to be Chrome -- and type in 'Festivus' into Google, you'll see an aluminum pole positioned on the left-hand side of your browser. Yep, it's a Festivus pole, an homage to the famous -- and dare I say, overrated -- Seinfeld episode where we learn that Festivus is a holiday invented by Frank Costanza, George's dad. The holiday, if you need a refresher on the episode, is celebrated with a "feats of strength" competition, an "airing of grievances", and lastly, an aluminum pole which George's father claims was chosen for its "very high strength to weight ratio." Kramer, naturally, becomes quite intrigued with the concept. Here's how we first learn about the pole. > Kramer: Is there a tree? Frank Costanza: No. Instead, there's a pole. It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting. Frank Costanza later adds that the pole is made from aluminum. In any event, here's what the Google homepage looks like if you do a search for Festivus. Not surprisingly, super fans of the show can purchase an actual Festivus pole online if they really want to get into the non-holiday holiday spirit. And last but not least, here's a fun clip from the Festivus-themed Seinfeld episode "The Strike." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX55AzGku5Y |

Uranus is weird and researchers think a giant collision caused it Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:35 AM PST Uranus has always been a bit of an oddball in our solar system and a new simulation presented by a group of researchers might explain why. Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, is a peculiar ice giant that is tilted at a 98-degree angle — while every other planet spins on a vertical axis in relation to its orbit, Uranus spins on a horizontal axis. Researchers suggest that this may have been caused by a massive collision. SEE ALSO: Moody photo from Mars shows a giant crater loaded with ice Jacob Kegerreis, a PhD researcher at Durham University, presented the analysis that a huge rock, possibly the size of a small planet, collided with Uranus, causing it to tilt dramatically, affecting its spin, its magnetic field, and even its heat distribution. Kegerreis and his fellow researchers created a high-resolution simulation to show exactly what this would have looked like 3 to 4 billion years ago. The impact would have been catastrophic. Along with affecting the planet's tilt, the impact event may have also spurred on the development of Uranus's thick icy outer layer, which keeps the heat from planet's core locked inside. Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that doesn't leak heat from its core, reaching temperatures of -371 degrees Fahrenheit at some of its chilliest points. The impact likely caused Uranus's larger moons and rings, which orbit in line with its rotation, to gain their unique path as well. There is still quite a bit to learn about Uranus, considering only one probe has taken a close look at the planet, and that was the Voyager 2 in 1986. Pakistan says US troop withdrawal 'step forward' in Afghan peace effort Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:53 AM PST Pakistan on Saturday welcomed President Donald Trump's decision to slash US troop numbers in Afghanistan, calling it a step towards peace in the war-torn nation. The decision to pull around half of the 14,000 American troops in Afghanistan has stunned and dismayed diplomats and officials in Kabul, and comes amid a renewed push for talks with the Taliban to end the 17-year war. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the move was "a step forward" in the peace effort. |

The Mars InSight robot just placed its first instrument on Mars’ surface Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:03 PM PST NASA's Mars InSight mission is moving along at a rapid pace. After landing on the planet just a few weeks ago, InSight has spent its days observing its new living space and sending back photos of the ground surrounding it. NASA's InSight team has been practicing the tricky task of placing the robot's sensitive instruments on the surface. Now, with a couple of years of observation and data gathering ahead of it, the bot has successfully deployed the first of its sensor suite, and NASA is very happy with how well things are progressing. "NASA's InSight lander has deployed its first instrument onto the surface of Mars, completing a major mission milestone," NASA writes in a new blog post. "New images from the lander show the seismometer on the ground, its copper-colored covering faintly illuminated in the Martian dusk. It looks as if all is calm and all is bright for InSight, heading into the end of the year." There were many factors at work in determining the timetable between landing and instrument deployment, and NASA is the first to admit that it got mighty lucky with InSight's landing site. One major concern was that rocks or uneven ground would hamper instrument placement, requiring extensive planning before the sensors could be placed on the planet. However, NASA's chosen landing site ended up being even more perfect than the InSight team could have hoped. The ground was virtually free of anything larger than a pebble and the robot's handlers have plenty of space to work with, allowing things to move on faster than initially planned. "InSight's timetable of activities on Mars has gone better than we hoped," InSight Project Manager Tom Hoffman said in a statement. "Getting the seismometer safely on the ground is an awesome Christmas present." |
Posted: 22 Dec 2018 02:00 AM PST Christmas wreath bread SERVES about 8 INGREDIENTS For the dough 250ml milk 50g butter, cubed, plus extra for greasing the bowl 2¼ tsp (1 sachet) active dry yeast 450g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 50g light-brown sugar ½ tsp sea salt 1 egg, lightly beaten icing sugar, to serve (optional) For the filling 200g currants 50g mixed candied citrus peel, chopped 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp mixed spice zest and juice of 1 lemon zest and juice of 1 orange 100g butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp light-brown sugar METHOD First make the dough. In a saucepan, heat the milk until just below boiling, then add the butter and remove from the heat. Allow to cool for five minutes – until just below body temperature – then add the yeast to the now lukewarm milk. Let stand for another 10 minutes. Combine the flour, brown sugar and salt in a large bowl, and make a well in the centre. Pour in the milk mixture. Using a wooden spoon, combine until the dough holds together. Continue kneading with your hands on a lightly floured worktop for another 10 minutes. Shape into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 90 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in volume. For the filling, heat the currants, peel, cinnamon, mixed spice, and lemon and orange zest and juice in a saucepan. Cook over very low heat, until the currants are nicely plumped up. Let cool. Mix in the butter and brown sugar and set aside. Knead the dough briefly once more. On a lightly floured worktop, roll it out into a rectangle about 45x30cm. Spread the filling over it using a spatula. Allow a margin of about 2cm at the long sides. Roll up the dough from a long side, moisten the bare edge with water, and press to seal the seam. Place the roll with the seam facing down. Moisten the ends of the roll as well and bend them together, forming a circle. Place the wreath on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. With a sharp knife, cut into the roll every 3cm, almost all the way through, but not quite. Pull out each cut piece, exposing the sides; the spirals will form a circular fan of swirls. Cover with a clean dish towel and allow the wreath to rise again for about 45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Brush the bread with the lightly beaten egg. Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar if you like. Recipe from Home Made Christmas, by Yvette van Boven, published by Abrams (£26.99). Posted: 23 Dec 2018 12:21 PM PST As expected, "Aquaman" easily fended off fellow newcomers "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Bumblebee." Those two titles were in a close race for No. 2, though Sunday estimates show "Mary Poppins Returns" narrowly defeating "Bumblebee." Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" was the de facto choice for moviegoers with young kids, pocketing $22.2 million over the three-day frame and $31 million during its first five days of release. Musicals don't typically see sizable opening weekends, and Disney's live-action sequel looks to have a healthy life at multiplexes during the holiday stretch. Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda co-star in the follow-up, which pocketed $20 million overseas for a worldwide start of $51 million. |
