Boeing defends 'fundamental safety' of 737 MAX after crash report Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:30 PM PDT Embattled US aviation giant Boeing on Thursday insisted on the "fundamental safety" of its 737 MAX aircraft but pledged to take all necessary steps to ensure the jets' airworthiness. The preliminary findings released Thursday by transportation authorities in Addis Ababa put the American aircraft giant under even greater pressure to restore public trust, with nearly 350 people dead in crashes involving its formerly top-selling 737 MAX aircraft in less than five months amid mounting signs the company's onboard anti-stall systems were fault. Muilenburg also acknowledged, however, that an "erroneous activation" of Boeing's so-called Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System had occurred. |
Biden Jokes About Consensual Hugging in First Speech Since Creepy Touching Allegations Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:04 AM PDT APIn his first public remarks since more than half a dozen women accused him of inappropriately touching them, former Vice President Joe Biden warned a raucous crowd of union workers in Washington, D.C., that their warm reception "may go to my head!"A few moments later, Biden proved himself right.Less than one minute into his speech before the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Biden joked that "I just want you to know, I had permission to hug Lonnie," referring to union president Lonnie R. Stephenson, and making light of charges made by seven women that he touched, hugged, kissed and physically handled them in ways that made them uncomfortable. The audience of union workers, nearly entirely male, reacted to the joke with hoots, cheers, and whistles."I don't know, man," Biden continued over the laughter. "Anyway."The former vice president then continued with his address, making no further mention of the allegations against him until making another joke, this time after having approached the children of some union workers who had assembled on the podium and wrapping his arm around the neck of the boy closest to him."By the way, he gave me permission to touch him," Biden said, to further applause.Speaking to reporters after the speech's conclusion, Biden said that he "wouldn't be surprised" if other women came forward with allegations that he crossed a line in touching, caressing or kissing them, but suggested that the onus was on the women to make it clear before he touched them."It is important that I and every one else is aware that any woman or man who feels uncomfortable, should have the right to say 'I'm uncomfortable with that' or hopefully get to the point before and say 'I'm uncomfortable with that, no matter what.' I really do understand it."Biden also denied that he had joked about the issue of consensual touching in his speech."I wasn't joking," Biden said. "The president of the union put his arms around me. That's how it's always been. That's how people react."Asked if he felt that he owed the women an apology, Biden initially dodged the question before allowing that while he was "sorry I didn't understand, I'm not sorry for any of my intentions. I'm not sorry for anything I've done."Biden's decision to make mockery of the issue of consensual physical contact on the campaign trail—sparked by former Democratic candidate for Nevada lieutenant governor Lucy Flores, who wrote about an alleged incident in a piece for New York Magazine's "The Cut"—is a departure from a video he released hastily on Thursday, in which he offered qualified contrition for making any women feel uncomfortable."In my career I've always tried to make a human connection, that's my responsibility," Biden said in the video. "Whether they're men, women, young, old—it's the way I've always been. It's the way I try to show I care about them and I'm listening... It's just who I am."Flores, of course, was not impressed with Biden's comments Friday, tweeting: "It's clear @JoeBiden hasn't reflected at all on how his inappropriate and unsolicited touching made women feel uncomfortable. To make light of something as serious as consent degrades the conversation women everywhere are courageously trying to have." Asked by The Daily Beast if this helped solidify her rationale for coming forward, Flores said: "Yes. Until his type of inappropriate behavior, which to be clear, isn't friendly hugs, is taken seriously, women will continue to feel disempowered to speak out against inappropriate behavior."Biden, who is approaching a potential third run for the Democratic presidential nomination, acknowledged in the video that "social norms" have changed, and that he would be more "mindful" in the future. "They've shifted, and the boundaries in protecting personal space have been reset. And I get it," Biden said. "I'll be much more mindful and will respect it."Biden has styled himself as a champion for women's rights, pointing to his authorship of the Violence Against Women Act, but skeptics have pointed to the charges against him, as well as his mishandling of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings, as evidence that he does not adequately understand the post-MeToo political climate."As human beings, we all make mistakes," said Sukari Hardnett, who Biden refused to allow to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of Anita Hill, who in 1991 accused Thomas of sexual harassment. "But what's critical is that we learn from those mistakes."The former vice president's nascent presidential campaign has struggled to shake the allegations, in part because there is no official campaign organization to do so. On Thursday, The Daily Beast reported that some of Biden's advisers have become convinced that the stories of women having been made to feel physically uncomfortable around the former vice president as "all coming out of Bernie World," insinuating that Flores' allegations were made to support the candidacy of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).Sanders' campaign fervently denied that implication."Neither the Bernie Sanders campaign nor anyone involved in it, planted, planned, persuaded, cajoled or otherwise urged Lucy Flores or anyone else to tell their story. Full stop, period, end of sentence. I don't want to hear it. We didn't play a role," Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir told The Daily Beast.—With reporting by Gideon Resnick.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here |

U.S. Senate Republicans change procedures to speed up Trump confirmations Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:04 PM PDT The move to shorten debate on such nominees from 30 hours to two hours was resisted by Democrats but they could not block it because Republicans hold 53 seats in the 100-seat chamber. Senator Mitch McConnell used his powers as majority leader to make the change, which will set a precedent that will apply to district court judges, the lowest rung of the judiciary, but not vacancies in the Supreme Court and federal appeals courts. The Senate has historically provided greater protection for whichever party is in the minority than the 435-seat House of Representatives by allowing longer debating time before votes and requiring 60 yes votes for most approvals. |

Philippines' Duterte warns China to back off disputed island Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:43 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has warned Beijing to back off from a disputed island in the South China Sea, warning of possible military action if China "touches" it amid rising tensions over the key waterway. Duterte, aiming to attract trade and investment from the Asian superpower, has mostly withheld his early criticism of Beijing's expansive claims to the sea -- a point of regional contention because trillions of dollars of goods pass through it. "I will not plead or beg, but I am just telling you that lay off the Pag-asa because I have soldiers there," Duterte said in speech to prosecutors. |

Dem. Rep. Bashes Green New Deal: ‘There’s No Need to Lie to Voters’ Posted: 04 Apr 2019 09:53 AM PDT Representative Max Rose (D., N.Y.) lambasted fellow New York freshman Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday for using the threat of climate change to advance a "massive socialist economic-policy platform" via the Green New Deal plan she introduced earlier this year.Rose, during a Wednesday interview on New York's local Metro Focus program, agreed with Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow progressives that climate change is an existential threat that requires a commensurate response, but argued that the federal-jobs and housing guarantees included in the plan are not necessary to combat climate change."This is not the time for milquetoast incrementalism," Rose said. "It just isn't. But with that being said, nothing about what I just said would provide a justification for a massive socialist economic-policy platform. [It's] just not needed.""There's no need to lie to voters right now," he added. "We don't need the Democratic version of 'repeal and replace.'"Rose, who earned a Purple Heart and a bronze star for his Army service in Afghanistan, dared Ocasio-Cortez to back a primary challenger against him when asked about her threat to unseat any Democrat who refused to back her progressive vision."She's going to keep a list," Rose said, referring to reports that Ocasio-Cortez threatened to make a list of uncooperative Democrats to provide to liberal activists. "This is very simple because I'm not one to deal in subtleties. I think it's best not to be passive-aggressive. If she wants to primary me, if the Justice Democrats want to primary me, I'll lay out the red carpet. We can settle this at the polls."The Green New Deal, which calls for a comprehensive restructuring of the economy in order to transition to 100 percent renewable energy within twelve years, would cost between $51 and $93 trillion in new government spending, according to the estimates of the American Action Forum.Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell held a vote on the plan late last month, prompting accusations from Democratic leadership that he was rushing the legislation to the floor in order to avoid having a substantive debate on it. Rather than going on record in support of the resolution, Democrats uniformly voted "present" while Republicans unanimously opposed its passage. |

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Take $39,000 Babymoon Posted: 05 Apr 2019 03:25 AM PDT CHRIS JACKSONAnyone who has ever employed a contractor will sympathize with the plight Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves in as they waited desperately for their new home at Frogmore Cottage to be finished ahead of the birth of their baby. But overruns (caused in part by the couple changing their minds) kept pushing back their move-in date. Not everyone, however, would have been in a position to ameliorate the tension by whisking their wife off for three days to a luxury hotel costing $13,000 per night while the last bits of snagging were taken care of.However, that's what Harry did this week, according to a report in The Sun, booking a $39,000 babymoon at the five-star Heckfield Place hotel in Hampshire. The Sun says they spent their three nights at the hotel, largely tucked away in their suite, which boasts its own dining room and two private terraces, enjoying cozy fireside meals.A friend told The Sun: "Meghan is only a couple of weeks away from giving birth, so Harry really wanted to treat her."It is, of course, entirely possible they did not pay full price for the stay at the hotel, which is owned by U.S. billionaire Gerald Chan. (Kensington Palace declined to comment.)Harry and Meghan are now believed to have moved into Frogmore Cottage, increasing speculation that they may be planning to have their baby in Windsor rather than London. The house was previously divided up into apartments for royal staff and has been the subject of a multimillion-dollar conversion, paid for by British taxpayers, although Harry and Meghan will pay for their furnishings themselves. Body of Israeli soldier missing since 1982 Lebanon War found by Russian and Syrian armies Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:19 AM PDT The body of an Israeli soldier missing since the 1982 Lebanon War was found by the Russian and Syrian armies, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, said yesterday. But Syrian state news agency SANA said Damascus had no details on the discovery of the corpse. Sergeant First Class Zachary Baumel had been listed as missing along with two other Israeli soldiers after a deadly battle with Syrian forces in a Lebanese village, and the return of his remains will bring to a close a highly sensitive case for Israelis. Russia said it handed over the remains to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, who is visiting Putin five days before he is to seek a fifth term in office in a difficult election. Mr Netanyahu, 69, is running in the April 9 vote despite facing potential corruption charges and experts say he hopes the Moscow visit will increase his chances of success on election day. "We are very happy that he will be able to receive the right military honours in his homeland." Mr Netanyahu said Mr Baumel would be laid to rest at a ceremony in Israel later Thursday. "Zachary's friends and family will take part," he said, adding that his family had been "very touched". "His father is no longer alive, unfortunately," he added. "His mother is around 100 years old. Zachary also has a sister." Neither Russia nor Israel have given details on how or where the remains were found. Mr Putin said only that Syria - with which Israel has technically been at war - participated in the operation. |

Tucker Carlson: ‘How Did We Wind Up With a Country in Which Feminists Do Science?’ Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:20 PM PDT Chip Somodevilla/GettyDays after facing widespread ridicule and criticism for saying primetime cable news competitor Chris Hayes is "what every man would be" if feminists had absolute power, Fox News host Tucker Carlson wondered Thursday how America wound up being a country where "feminists do science."During Thursday night's broadcast of Tucker Carlson Tonight, the conservative primetime star shared a clip—full of scary music and eerie effects—of Democratic politicians warning about the dangers of climate change, mockingly noting that it's "so bad they're running out of adjectives."Carlson then highlighted a recent study that asks whether "toxic masculinity" is a driver behind climate change by arguing that "when men's gender identity was threatened, they tried to reassert their masculinity through environmentally damaging choices." The report added that once this "unconscious bias is revealed, it has the potential to help society shift our increasingly precarious relationship with the environment for the better."Or, the way Carlson sees it, "if we want to save the environment we have to suppress men."The Fox News host turned not to a scientist or climate-change expert to dissect the study's conclusions, but conservative author and frequent guest Mark Steyn, who quipped that his insecurities about his masculinity "are causing rising sea levels in the Maldives" and that he's "kind of on board" with the study's thesis."How did we wind up with a country in which feminists do science?" Carlson asked, apparently not the least bit fazed by the current ad boycott he is facing. "I mean, isn't that sort of bound to get a study like this, right?"Steyn replied that it's "almost impossible" to tell if the study is legitimate or an "ingenious parody." This caused him to go on a tangent about one of the study's experiments, which he claimed consisted of "pantywaist" Walmart gift cards causing men to buy "very macho masculine things that melt the polar ice caps." "This is the kind of social science that the higher-education institutions of America are spending a fortune investigating," Steyn sneered. After Carlson said he thought "climate science was all about ice core samples" and not Walmart gift cards, Steyn scornfully responded that "climate science is a state of mind" and that the "big bucks" are in surveys where you "decide what's heating up the planet is men." Eventually, Steyn concluded by ranting about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) "flatulent" cows, claiming they will team up with a "plague of locusts" to wipe out "toxic masculine men" and save the planet."I wish there was a Latin term for government by unhappy crazy people because that's where we are," Carlson concluded.Read more at The Daily Beast. |
