Maduro exhorts Venezuela military to fight 'any coup plotter' Posted: 02 May 2019 04:26 PM PDT Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday called on the armed forces to oppose "any coup plotter" after a military uprising in support of opposition leader Juan Guaido fizzled out, and subsequent street clashes left four protesters dead. On Tuesday, Guaido -- who has been recognized by more than 50 countries as the crisis-wracked country's interim president -- urged the armed forces to rise up against the embattled leader. A small group heeded the call, but the movement failed to ignite -- the military leadership ratified their support for the government, and Maduro is standing his ground despite international pressure. |

Japan’s new emperor ‘prays for happiness of the people’ in first address Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:59 PM PDT Emperor Naruhito gave his first speech as the new monarch of Japan on Wednesday morning, promising to fulfill his responsibilities as "the symbol of the state and the unity of the people". Just hours after his father, Emperor Akihito, formally stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne at midnight and the new Reiwa Era dawned, Emperor Naruhito also promised to "sincerely pray for the happiness of the people and the further development of the nation, as well as the peace of the world". The emperor also vowed to "share in the joys and sorrows of the people", as well as expressing "heartfelt respect and appreciation" for the actions of his father. The 59-year-old emperor was speaking shortly after attending a brief ceremony in the palace - the Kenji-to-Shokei-no-Gi - in which he accepted the imperial regalia, which signify his position as emperor. In an event that is traditionally restricted to adult male members of the imperial family and the cabinet - although Japan's only female government minister, Satsuki Katayama, broke precedent by being in attendance - chamberlains to the imperial family entered the Matsu-no-Ma state room bearing the symbols of the emperor. Shinto priests recite religious words before entering the main building to conduct a festive ceremony to report the enthronement of the new emperor Credit: CHARLY TRIBALLEAU/AFP The regalia - a sword and a jewel - are inside sealed boxes that have not been opened in centuries. The third item that makes up the regalia, a mirror, is not permitted to leave Ise Shrine, in Mie Prefecture, the spiritual home of the Shinto religion. Chamberlains also presented the two seals of state to the emperor, who wore a formal suit with a red sash and a white bow tie. Skies cleared over Tokyo on Wednesday morning, although the heavy rain overnight had not stopped countless Japanese people celebrating the arrival of the new era on the stroke of midnight. Television footage has shown revellers dancing in the streets in the Shibuya district of Tokyo at midnight, many wearing T-shirts bearing the two characters for the name of the new era - which means "beautiful harmony". Thousands more braved the rain to be outside the imperial palace at midnight, with one man who had travelled from Kyoto for the occasion telling Kyodo News, "I wanted to see this place to have a special memory because this is a once-in-a-lifetime event". In Yamagata, five couples got married at a hotel at midnight, while hundreds of others registered their marriages at city halls within seconds of the start of the new era. Elsewhere, a fully-booked charter flight flew over Mount Fuji at dawn and local officials on Minamitorishima Island, Japan's most easterly point, gathered on a beach to see the first sunrise of the Reiwa Era. A number of further ceremonies are scheduled for the coming months, culminating in the Sokuirei Seiden no Gi, the formal enthronement of the emperor, on October 22. |
Barr, Mueller trade barbs as Russia probe rift goes public Posted: 01 May 2019 06:33 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Private tensions between Justice Department leaders and special counsel Robert Mueller's team broke into public view in extraordinary fashion Wednesday as Attorney General William Barr pushed back at the special counsel's "snitty" complaints over his handling of the Trump-Russia investigation report. |
UPDATE 2-McKesson to pay $37 million to resolve West Virginia opioid lawsuit Posted: 02 May 2019 08:39 AM PDT Drug distributor McKesson Corp has agreed to pay $37 million to resolve a lawsuit by the state of West Virginia alleging it helped fuel a U.S. opioid epidemic by failing to stop suspicious orders of painkillers by pharmacies in the state. The settlement announced by West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey on Thursday came in one of hundreds of similar lawsuits by states and local governments against McKesson and other distributors over their roles in the opioid crisis. The settlement was the largest that a distributor has agreed with a state in the litigation. |

Border Patrol Arrests 424 Migrants in Largest Bust on Record Posted: 01 May 2019 09:37 AM PDT U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents arrested 424 migrants attempting to cross the southern border on Tuesday in the "largest" collective arrest in the agency's history.CBP agents encountered and ultimately apprehended "a group of what seemed to be over 400 illegal aliens" early Tuesday morning near the border town of Sunland Park, N.M., according to an agency press release.Hours later, agents working at the Antelope Wells Port of Entry, roughly 160 miles west of Sunland Park, arrested a second group of 230 migrants, most of whom were members of families or unaccompanied minors from Central America."This is an ongoing situation that U.S Border Patrol agents are facing in southern New Mexico: hundreds of parents and children being encountered by agents after having faced a dangerous journey in the hands of unscrupulous smugglers," the press release read.> LARGEST GROUP APPREHENDED—BorderPatrol agents apprehended the largest group of 424 illegal aliens just after midnight this morning in Sunland Park, NM. A second group of 230 illegal aliens was also apprehended in Antelope Wells, NM this morning. More: https://t.co/54XxK78XB2 pic.twitter.com/i5owidRi1t> > -- CBP (@CBP) April 30, 2019CBP agents made more arrests in the month of March than in any month in the previous decade and the agency claims there is no sign that the flow of migrants will abate any time soon.In addition to the sheer volume of migration, CBP resources have been overwhelmed by the number of family units and unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials have been forced to release thousands of migrants into the care of private charities in Arizona and Texas since they cannot adequately house women and children awaiting asylum hearings. This dynamic has led many human traffickers to resort to using kidnapped children to aid unrelated adults seeking to be released into the U.S. after applying for asylum, according to CBP."Criminal organizations continue to exploit innocent human lives in order to enhance their illicit activities without due regard to the risks of human life. In most cases these smugglers never cross the border themselves in order to avoid apprehension," the press release read. |

Japan's New Emperor Naruhito Starts Reign at 83% Approval Rating Posted: 02 May 2019 01:41 AM PDT A similar number — 80 percent — also support the ascension of a female emperor, according to the poll released by Kyodo News on Thursday. The numbers underscore how enduringly popular the monarchy remains in Japan, where the emperor has few powers and serves as a national symbol under the constitution. The streets around Tokyo's Imperial Palace were filled with people looking to get a glimpse of the new emperor on Wednesday as he traveled to and from royal ceremonies. |

Mueller’s Willing to Testify, but Trump DOJ Is Holding It Up: Dems Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:59 PM PDT Alex Wong/GettyHouse Democrats tell The Daily Beast they've been told Special Counsel Robert Mueller is willing to testify before them about his report on Russian interference in the 2016 election, but the Department of Justice has been unwilling to set a date for it to happen. The impasse comes as lawmakers have grown increasingly frustrated over Attorney General Bill Barr's handling of the release of the Mueller probe and as other Trump associates have declined to appear before congressional committees. Shortly after it was reported on Tuesday night that Mueller had written and called Barr to complain that the attorney general had not fully represented the special counsel's findings, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) sent out a statement demanding both men appear before his committee and saying he had been stonewalled so far. "The Attorney General has expressed some reluctance to appear before the House Judiciary Committee this Thursday," Nadler said. "These reports make it that much more important for him to appear and answer our questions. The Department of Justice has also been reluctant to confirm a date for Special Counsel Mueller to testify."Nadler had sent a letter to DOJ following the department's release of the Mueller Report asking that Mueller appear for questioning no later than May 23. Two sources familiar with the conversations said the Judiciary Committee has been in regular contact with DOJ about setting a date for Mueller's testimony and that those conversations were still going on. Committee sources said it was their impression that Mueller was willing to testify to discuss his findings, though it was unclear whether that would take place in public or behind closed doors. But the DOJ has, according to multiple sources, not agreed to a date, citing Mueller's continued status as a department employee—since the special counsel serves under the attorney general. A Department of Justice spokesperson did not return a request for comment. Barr, likewise, has been resisting congressional hearings, though mainly because he objects to the structuring of the proposed questioning. His reluctance has frustrated Democrats on the Hill, though he is slated to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. Last week, House Democrats held a caucus call in which they discussed their strategy for the Barr hearing and how to get the White House to cooperate on investigations. Subsequent conversations between senior members focused on whether impeachment proceedings were appropriate given Trump's refusal to comply with subpoenas.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? US says military action 'possible' in Venezuela as Kremlin is told to stop meddling Posted: 01 May 2019 04:54 AM PDT Donald Trump's administration has warned Russia to stop meddling in Venezuela and talked up the chance of US military action as a second day of clashes between protesters and security forces played out. Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said that military involvement of some form is "possible" as he accused the Kremlin of convincing embattled president Nicolas Maduro to remain in post on Tuesday. John Bolton, the White House national security adviser, raised the possibility of fresh sanctions as he told Russia publicly that it had no business getting involved in the Venezuelan dispute. "This is our hemisphere. It's not where the Russians should be interfering. This was a mistake on their part," Mr Bolton said. The Kremlin, which is backing Mr Maduro, in turn accused America of being behind an attempted "coup", calling Washington's actions a "gross violation of international law". The US-Russia tensions flared as Juan Guaido, the 35-year-old opposition leader who declared himself interim president in January, once again took to the streets after urging a military uprising, despite violence leaving dozens injured the day before. Members of the Bolivarian National Guard who joined Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed acting president Juan Guaido fire into the air to repel forces loyal to President Nicolas Maduro Credit: AFP In Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, national guardsmen loyal to Mr Maduro roamed on motorcycles to control the demonstrations while tear gas was again used on the crowds. Mr Guaido had called for the biggest protests in the country's history. Supporters of Mr Maduro, the 56-year-old socialist leader, took to the streets as well. Mr Maduro was due to attend a rally and vowed that military figures who turned on him would not go "unpunished". Tuesday's calls by Mr Guaido for a military uprising had failed to topple Mr Maduro immediately and there were signs that some of those involved were seeking protection. Leopoldo Lopez, a well known opposition politician who escaped his house arrest and appeared in public on Tuesday, took refuge in the Spanish embassy. At least 25 Venezuelan troops have also applied for asylum in the Brazilian embassy. Maduro appears flanked by Venezuela's Defence Minister and two top military commanders in a photo released on Tuesday by the Miraflores Press Office Tensions have been mounting between the US, one of more than 50 countries backing Mr Guaido's claim to power, and Russia and Cuba, who support Mr Maduro and have been accused of propping him up. Mr Maduro denied a claim by Mr Pompeo that he was due to flee the country on Tuesday only to be convinced otherwise by the Russians. "Mr Pompeo, please, what lack of seriousness," he said. The Russian foreign ministry also issued a denial, with spokesman Maria Zakharova calling it "absolute disinformation and fake news". Mr Pompeo doubled down on the Trump administration's instance for months that all options were on the table when it comes to US military action in Venezuela. "The president has been crystal clear and incredibly consistent. Military action is possible. If that's what's required, that's what the United States will do," Mr Pompeo told Fox Business Network. An opposition demonstrator walks near a bus in flames during clashes with soldiers loyal to Maduro Credit: AFP He later talked to Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, and urged the Kremlin to stop its "destabilising" actions, according to the State Department. Mr Lavrov in turn called US actions illegal, according to a read out from the Russian foreign ministry, and warned "the continuation of aggressive steps is fraught with the most serious consequences". With the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro claiming a "crack" in the Venezuelan military had been revealed but Mr Maduro himself insisting commanders remained loyal, the Venezuelan president's chances of staying in office remain unclear. But some are predicting he could yet retain power. Sergio Gúzman, a Bogota based political risk analyst, told The Telegraph: "I think the moment has gone for Guaido. Maduro may have lost some military support but the opposition is losing momentum at a greater rate." |

Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL full specs leak ahead of official reveal Posted: 01 May 2019 07:12 AM PDT Once again, a major smartphone vendor will have virtually nothing left to reveal at its reveal event, as Google's mid-range Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones have leaked in full this week. First, courtesy of Max J., we got a look at the retail packaging for the Pixel 3a XL on Tuesday night, then on Wednesday morning, the same source shared the most complete list of specifications for each phone that we have seen on the internet to date.As expected, these are lower-specced devices than the 2018 flagships that Google launched in the fall. Having had limited success competing with the likes of Samsung and Apple, it appears that Google is going to attempt to court a different crowd with a significantly more affordable device, but from a brand they know well.According to Max J., the Pixel 3a will feature a 5.6-inch gOLED Full HD+ display with 2220 x 1080 resolution, 441ppi and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Russia accuses Venezuelan opposition of resorting to violence Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:14 PM PDT Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday accused the opposition in Venezuela of resorting to violence in what it said was a brazen attempt to draw the country's armed forces into clashes. The ministry made the allegation after Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido called for a military uprising to oust President Nicolas Maduro and armed factions exchanged gunfire outside a Caracas air base as the country hit a new crisis point after years of political and economic chaos. Russia, which has supplied weapons to Venezuela and acted as a lender of last resort, has accused the United States of trying to undermine Maduro, someone Moscow counts as one of its closest allies in Latin America. |

Nearly everything there is to know about Google’s next Pixel phones just leaked Posted: 02 May 2019 07:12 AM PDT Hardcore Android fans absolutely adore Google's Pixel smartphones... but pretty much no one else buys them. They're fantastic handsets, don't get us wrong, but Google simply doesn't have the same marketing muscle as companies like Samsung and Apple. The company also lacks the same level of cooperation with wireless carriers or other distribution partners as its larger smartphone rivals. As a result, Galaxy phones and iPhones remain top sellers and Pixel phones, for the most part, fall by the wayside. In fact, Google just confirmed on its recent earnings call that its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phone sales have been slower than the Pixel 2 series phones that preceded them, and estimates suggest Pixel 2 sales were pretty disappointing to begin with. It's great that hardcore Android fans have access to "pure Android" phones that get instant access to the latest and greatest software updates, but Google undoubtedly wants to extended the reach of its smartphone hardware. To that end, the company has long been rumored to be working on lower-cost Pixel phones. This is a great plan considering how expensive flagship phones have become in recent years, with top-of-the-line smartphones from Apple and Samsung now reaching astronomical prices of $1,500 and beyond. Google's lower-cost Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL phones were confirmed months ago, and now a new leak reveals just about everything there is to know about these upcoming new Pixels. If you're anything like us, you really miss Google's old line of Nexus smartphones. Nexus handsets offered pure Android, sleek designs, and plenty of power at remarkably reasonable prices. Google completely cancelled its Nexus phone program when it introduced its first-generation Pixel phones, but it looks like the company has now had a change of heart. The Nexus brand might be dead and buried, but there's no question that it will live on in spirit when the new Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are announced. According to a report we covered earlier today, the Pixel 3a will start at just $399 and the Pixel 3a XL will start at $479. Those are fantastic prices indeed, but what exactly will you get for those modest sums?Android news blog Droid Life got its hands on a bunch of marketing materials for the upcoming new Pixel phones. Along with those images, it also received details about all of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL's key specs. The biggest news is that both phones will offer the same great camera experience as their pricier predecessors -- including Google's incredible Night Sight low-light photography feature. The phones will also feature fast charging tech that adds 7 hours of usage with just a 15-minute charge. Beyond that, we're looking at dual 12.2-megapixel rear camera sensors, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of storage, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, pressure-sensitive edges, a rear fingerprint sensor, and Android 9.0 Pie. The Pixel 3a will have a 3,000 mAh battery and a 5.6-inch screen, while the larger Pixel 3a XL will feature a 3,700 mAh battery and a 6-inch display.Google is expected to unveil its new Pixel 3a series phones next week during its Google I/O 2019 keynote presentation. |

William Barr testimony - live: US attorney general grilled by Senate amid calls for his impeachment Posted: 01 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT William Barr is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, just after the public release of a March letter from special counsel Robert Mueller to the attorney general to express his frustration at the handling of the report detailing the investigation into whether Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election, and obstructed justice during the ensuing investigation. In March, Mr Barr published a four-page summary of the 448-page dossier before releasing a redacted version last month — Mr Mueller sent his letter expressing frustration just days after the initial summary was released. Following the release of that summary, President Trump and the right-wing media hailed the findings of the report as a "total exoneration", despite Mr Mueller declaring the opposite and the report painting a highly unflattering portrait of Mr Trump and his inner circle.News that Mr Mueller sent such came the night before Mr Barr began his two days of testimony before the Senate and House judiciary committees. He is expected to face tough questions on the Mueller report and his decision-making surrounding it. Calls for his impeachment as a result of the letter have already begun. The president, for his part, found himself duped on Wednesday morning into retweeting a message from a decidedly hostile Twitter account. Please allow a moment for our liveblog to load |

Qualcomm hangs on to most Apple gains after earnings report Posted: 01 May 2019 04:18 PM PDT The stock kept most of the 50%-plus gains of the past few weeks, reflecting investor relief that Qualcomm had found a path to resume supplying chips to the iPhone. Qualcomm will book a one-time payment of $4.5 billion to $4.7 billion in the fiscal third quarter from the settlement, as Apple catches up on royalties that the iPhone maker did not pay while they were locked a legal dispute. Excluding that payment, Qualcomm estimated $4.7 billion to $5.5 billion in revenue, generally below the $5.29 billion analysts were expecting, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. |

Missouri Governor Mike Parson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that GM, in a closed-door meeting, had outlined a plan to invest in the plant and add jobs. Parson told the newspaper that GM is seeking a package of state incentives that would need approval from the legislature before committing to the project to expand its Wentzville plant, which builds the midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks, Chevrolet Express Cargo van and GMC Savana full-size van. |
North Korea warns US of 'undesired consequences' if it does not change course Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:25 PM PDT North Korea has told the US it will face "undesired consequences" if it fails to readjust its position on nuclear disarmament, in the latest of a series of warnings to Washington and its allies in recent months. Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, earlier this month issued a year-end ultimatum to resolve stalled negotiations over the dismantlement of his nuclear and missiles programme after direct talks with Donald Trump, the US president, in Hanoi in February did not produce a deal. The apparent dismissal of Kim's deadline by Mr Trump and Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, has raised heckles in Pyongyang, which last week demanded Mr Pompeo be replaced in denuclearisation talks by somebody "more mature." On Tuesday, Choe Son Hui, North Korea's foreign minister criticised a Pompeo interview last week with CBS in which he said the United States may have to "change paths" if the negotiations break down. "Changing paths is not a privilege that only the United States has, but it could be our own choice if we make up our mind," Ms Choe was quoted as saying by the state-sanctioned KCNA news agency. Choe Son Hui, the vice foreign minister, issued the latest warning to the US Credit: Artyom Korotayev/TASS "If the United States fails to reestablish its position within the timeline we gave, it will see truly undesired consequences." She added that North Korea remained committed to denuclearisation but only if the US took a different course. Pyongyang wants a step-by-step approach, where sanctions can be eased in exchange for dismantling some of its nuclear facilities but Mr Trump is doubling down on his demands for a "big deal" that would only grant economic relief if Kim hands over all of his nuclear weapons. "We know the path we will take, but we're just hesitating to choose as we have set the deadline for the United States," said Ms Choe. North Korea has been consistently warning this year that it may disengage from diplomatic talks if no progress is made. In his New Year's address, Kim Jong-un said he hoped to continue denuclearisation negotiations with Mr Trump that cautioned that he could be forced to take a "new path" if the US persisted with crippling economic sanctions and "misjudges our patience" with "unilateral demands." Pyongyang has also been ramping up its criticism of South Korea, in a sign that renewed diplomatic ties between the neighbouring countries are wearing thin. Tick tock, that's the sound of the North Korean clock....and another nuclear weapon coming off the line. https://t.co/M0HpORGmcN— Vipin Narang (@NarangVipin) April 30, 2019 Last week the North lashed out at Seoul for its "open perfidy" participating in a joint military drill with the US, threatening that there could be a "response from our army." Writing on the 38 North website, North Korea scholar Robert Carlin said the singling out of the South Korean "authorities" for criticism revealed a downturn in relations. "Typically, during periods when inter-Korean dialogue is in a positive phase, the North generally keeps its complaints against the South aimed at the "military." The shift to direct criticism of the "authorities" is a signal of how much the atmosphere for inter-Korean dialogue has frayed," he wrote. Mr Pompeo, meanwhile, told Fox news he is still "hopeful" about the prospects of progress on denuclearisation but said the ball was in Pyongyang's court. "We're prepared to engage in conversations to arrive at a process by which the North Koreans can see their way clear to fulfilling the commitment that Chairman Kim made back in Singapore in June of last year," he added, referring to the first summit between the North Korean and US leaders. That summit concluded that the two nations would "work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" but did not agree on the ways to do so. When asked about the North Korean calls for him to be dropped from the talks, Mr Pompeo confirmed that he was still leading the US negotiating team. "We don't get to decide who my counterpart is, and President Trump gets to decide who will represent America," he said. |
