Holocaust survivor to ICE director, California sheriff: ‘History is not on your side’ Posted: 29 Mar 2017 09:25 AM PDT An Auschwitz survivor confronted one of the nation's top immigration officials and a local sheriff at a California town hall Tuesday night. Bernard Marks, 87, addressed Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan and Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones, a supporter of President Trump. Jones had invited Homan to the public forum to discuss address the community's concerns about ICE's collaboration with local law enforcement. |

China says 'no such thing' as man-made islands in South China Sea Posted: 30 Mar 2017 04:16 AM PDT There was "no such thing" as man-made islands in the disputed South China Sea, China's Defence Ministry said on Thursday, and reiterated that any building work was mainly for civilian purposes. China, which claims most of the resource-rich region, has carried out land reclamation and construction on several islands in the Spratly archipelago, parts of which are also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. "Most of the building is for civilian purposes, including necessary defensive facilities." The South China Sea is generally stable at present, but some countries outside the region are anxious about this and want to hype things up and create tensions, Wu said, using terminology that normally refers to the United States. |

Clashes in Kashmir: Civilians killed in protests against Indian rule Posted: 30 Mar 2017 05:00 AM PDT Three civilians were killed and 28 other people were injured in anti-India protests that erupted yesterday following a gunbattle between rebels and government forces that killed a rebel in disputed Kashmir, police and witnesses said. The gunbattle began after police and soldiers cordoned off the southern town of Chadoora following a tip that at least one militant was hiding in a house, said Inspector-General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani. Witnesses said intense clashes between rock-throwing protesters and government forces erupted just a few hundred meters (yards) from the besieged house, with police and paramilitary soldiers firing shotgun pellets and tear gas to stop the protest. |
John McCain is not sorry for calling Kim Jong Un ‘fat’ Posted: 29 Mar 2017 01:16 PM PDT "What, did they want me to call him a crazy skinny kid?" Sen. John McCain quipped via Twitter on Wednesday in response to a report by the Korean Central News Agency that the dignity of North Korea's supreme leadership was hurt by McCain's recent description of Kim Jong Un as the "crazy fat kid that's running North Korea." What, did they want me to call him a crazy skinny kid? https://t.co/Ym3juRfBev |
Arizona high school athletes arrested in hazing case Posted: 29 Mar 2017 04:17 PM PDT Six Arizona high school football players were arrested on Wednesday and accused of sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated assault in connection with a hazing case, police said. Police said the students were current or former members of the team at Hamilton High School in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler. "This is an on-going investigation and there may be other victims out there," said Detective Seth Tyler, a Chandler police spokesman. |

Completely insane architects are planning to hang a skyscraper from an asteroid Posted: 29 Mar 2017 03:00 PM PDT Words like "insane," "crazy," and "nuts" get thrown around a lot — I use them more than my fair share, if I'm being honest — but a New York design group just revealed plans for a new type of skyscraper that really can't be described any other way. Their plan is to construct a huge structure on the surface of an asteroid and, believe it or not, that's probably the most rational part of the proposal. Clouds Architecture Office is the firm that wants to build the massive skyscraper, which it calls Analemma Tower. The structure, which at this point is completely conceptual and likely completely impossible, would require that an asteroid be captured and brought into near-Earth orbit. With anchor points on the asteroid, the building is designed to — this is the part where things go completely off the rails — hang completely upside down, using the asteroid like a gravitational balloon to hold the structure in place above the Earth's surface. The tower would be in eccentric geosynchronous orbit, and would "travel" between hemispheres on a regular daily schedule, and in a figure eight pattern. The architects say the tower would spend much of its time over New York City thanks to its planned trajectory. The building could remain completely disconnected from the surface indefinitely by drawing power from solar panels situated above cloud level. Water would be filtered within the structure in a semi-closed loop, but the tower could also capture its own water while in-flight. As far as traveling to and from the tower, the concept suggests that people could just parachute down to Earth whenever they needed to leave. As for getting back home, the company doesn't seem to have nailed down exactly how that will work, but by the time the tower is actually built we'll probably have teleportation pads, too. |

How to Stop ISPs from Selling Your Private Data Posted: 29 Mar 2017 05:15 AM PDT The Internet may seem like an apolitical entity, but the fact is, the United States government has a great deal of influence over it. On Thursday (Mar. 23), the U.S. Senate voted to overturn an important broadband privacy rule instituted under the Obama administration. Your ISP will continue to be able to collect and sell your online data with reckless abandon, and frankly, unless you're willing to kneecap your own Internet access, you can't do much about it. |

California to seek death penalty in salon massacre Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:09 PM PDT California's attorney general said on Wednesday his office would press ahead in seeking the death penalty for a man who pleaded guilty to killing eight people in a 2011 shooting rampage, even though local prosecutors were sanctioned for acting improperly. The state's top elected law enforcement official assumed responsibility for the penalty phase of the case against Scott Dekraai after a California appeals court upheld a lower-court order recusing the Orange County District Attorney's Office over prosecutorial misconduct. Defense lawyers sought to remove local prosecutors and bar them from seeking the death penalty on grounds that jailhouse informants were improperly used to wring a confession from Dekraai. |

Houthi rebels in Yemen threatening strategic strait: US official Posted: 29 Mar 2017 11:37 AM PDT Houthi rebels in Yemen are threatening free movement into and out of the Red Sea with missiles, mines and other sophisticated defenses on a key strait, a top US general said Wednesday. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, a strategic passage for world trade. Bordering it to the east, Yemen is locked in a deadly civil war between government forces backed by an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the Iran-supported Houthis. |
Posted: 28 Mar 2017 08:59 PM PDT BANGKOK (AP) — The Ferrari driver who allegedly slammed into a motorcycle cop, dragged him along the road and then sped away from the mangled body took just hours to find, as investigators followed a drip, drip, drip trail of brake fluid up a street, down an alley, and into the gated estate of one of Thailand's richest families. The prosecution of Red Bull heir Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya, however, has been delayed for close to five years. The times when Vorayuth has been called in on charges, he hasn't shown up, claiming through his attorney that he was sick or out of the country on business. |

'El Chapo' prison conditions worst in U.S., prevent proper defense: lawyers Posted: 30 Mar 2017 01:22 PM PDT Held without access to sunlight or his relatives, Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is under more restrictive captivity than any other U.S. prisoner and it is difficult to mount a defense, his court appointed lawyers said on Thursday. Mexico extradited Guzman, who is the head of Sinaloa Cartel, to New York in January, a few hours before U.S. President Donald Trump took office. Guzman, who escaped from two Mexican prisons and was a key figure in a bloody drug war, is seen as a flight risk by the U.S. government. |

Modified European VW diesels 'undrivable,' say some owners Posted: 29 Mar 2017 06:30 AM PDT Most of the Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars sold in the U.S. from 2009 through 2015 are likely to be bought back from their owners, probably leaving fewer than 100,000 on U.S. roads. Roughly 11 million cars with TDI diesel engines were sold by VW Group under multiple brands, and some of those will be modified—in some cases only with software updates. DON'T MISS: Which VW diesels can be fixed, and which can't? |
US-led coalition 'probably' had role in Mosul civilian casualties Posted: 28 Mar 2017 08:09 PM PDT The US-led anti-jihadist coalition said Tuesday it "probably" played a role in civilian casualties in west Mosul, as the UN and Amnesty International called for greater efforts to protect civilians. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are still inside west Mosul, caught up in deadly fighting between the Islamic State group and Iraqi forces who are backed by coalition air strikes in the battle to retake the area from the jihadists. West Mosul is both smaller and more densely populated than the city's east, meaning that this stage of the battle poses a greater danger to civilians than those that came before. |
Kansas governor vetoes Medicaid expansion bill Posted: 30 Mar 2017 12:02 PM PDT The governor of Kansas on Thursday vetoed a bill expanding eligibility for Medicaid for the poor under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) because the measure was not fiscally responsible and would still fund Planned Parenthood. State lawmakers in the Republican-controlled senate voted in favor of the measure on Tuesday, just days after President Donald Trump's efforts to repeal and replace the ACA, also known as Obamacare, ended with the bill being pulled from a vote. |

Warning: Don’t believe phone scammers who say your iCloud account was hacked Posted: 30 Mar 2017 08:43 AM PDT There's a group of hackers out there that claims it can reset hundreds of millions of iPhones by using stolen iCloud credentials. The attack should occur on April 7th unless Apple pays a ransom, but the iPhone maker denied having its servers breached. If the threat is real, it uses data taken from previous breaches. Information gained from previous hacks might be used to reset iPhones, a report showed, but it's not clear what the scope of the attack would be. So far, the hackers seem to be interested in getting as much publicity as possible. But other scammers have developed a different iCloud con, one that's getting more traction thanks to all the news detailing the potential attack on April 7th. The scammers call unsuspecting iPhone users to tell them their iCloud accounts have been hacked. Whatever you may think, don't believe them — your iCloud account is probably safe. The scammers pretend to call you from Apple's support department, Business Insider explains, and many people posted on Twitter to detail their experiences with this new iCloud con. https://twitter.com/steffartnieee/status/846480180923183104 The callers, who seem to be targeting users at random, will tell you that your iCloud account was hacked, and they will ask for your credentials to verify your identity. The log-in information can then be used by an attacker to sign into the victim's iCloud account, make purchases, access protected messages and backups, and more. Furthermore, Macworld points out that scammers may insist on installing antivirus software on your computer, which is likely malware ready to steal more data from unsuspecting victims. https://twitter.com/HenryKIRO7/status/847238485580718080 If you believe that your iCloud account was hacked, change the password yourself on a machine you know to be secure, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. You can even contact Apple yourself, but don't fall for this scam. |
Senate kills rule meant to protect family planning funds Posted: 30 Mar 2017 01:53 PM PDT For the second time on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence took the rare step of breaking a tie in the U.S. Senate, as he cast the deciding vote in rolling back protections for federal funds for family planning and reproductive health. In a 51-50 vote, senators approved killing a rule intended to keep federal grants flowing to clinics that provide contraception and other services in states that want to block the funding. Earlier in the day, Pence was called upon to end the deadlock over advancing the resolution to a final vote. |

Liu Shaoyo was shot on Sunday by a police team that was called to his apartment in northeast Paris over a suspected domestic dispute. The police said the officer who fired the shots acted in self-defence after the 56-year-old father of five attacked another officer with a knife. |
California would increase fuel taxes under $52 billion road repair plan Posted: 29 Mar 2017 03:23 PM PDT California would increase gasoline taxes and other transportation-related fees for the first time in decades to fund an ambitious $52 billion plan to repair the state's sagging infrastructure under a deal announced Wednesday. The deal between fiscally moderate Democratic Governor Jerry Brown and leaders of the majority Democrat legislature would increase the excise tax on gasoline by 12 cents per gallon from the current $0.28, and on diesel fuel by 20 cents per gallon, among other fees, over 10 years to pay for repairs to roads and bridges as well as for anti-congestion projects. "Let's be clear - our roads suck," said Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, who represents blue-collar suburbs south of Los Angeles at a news conference announcing the deal. |
