'Sex addict' Anthony Weiner cries in court as he is jailed for sexting girl, 15 Posted: 26 Sep 2017 06:04 AM PDT Disgraced politician Anthony Weiner broke down in tears in court as a judge said she would "make a statement" by sentencing him to 21 months in prison for sexting an underage girl. Mr Weiner, who was found to have sent explicit pictures to a 15-year-old via Skype and Snapchat, pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor. The former New York Congressman had hoped to avoid jail time, after the judge acknowledged he had been receiving treatment for sex addiction. |
One week to cross a street: how IS pinned down Filipino soldiers in Marawi Posted: 24 Sep 2017 11:00 PM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - With a grimace, Brigadier General Melquiades Ordiales of the Philippines 1st Marine Brigade recounted the painful gains made against Islamist militants in Marawi City. "It took us one week from this point to that point, to cross that street," he said, casting his eyes to the other side of a two-lane road in the heart of the southern Philippines city, lined by three-storey buildings shattered by air strikes and the remaining walls riddled with bullet holes. "It was really very, very tough." The grinding urban warfare that has destroyed much of the grandly named Sultan Omar Dianalan Boulevard shows just how much of a threat Islamic State is to the Philippines and potentially other countries in the Southeast Asian region. |

The incident took place far from Duterte's residence inside the compound, Dagoy said, adding that even other members of the security force were unaware of the shooting until Gonzaga's wife found the body. |

FDA declines to approve J&J arthritis drug sirukumab Posted: 25 Sep 2017 07:38 AM PDT By Toni Clarke (Reuters) - (The Sept. 22 story has been corrected to remove the reference to Humira being a Jak-inhibitor in the final paragraph. Humira is a TNF-inhibitor.) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has declined to approve Johnson & Johnson's rheumatoid arthritis drug sirukumab, saying additional clinical data is needed to further evaluate its safety, the company said on Friday. The FDA's decision is in keeping with an advisory panel's recommendation in August that the FDA reject the drug. |
Poroshenko signs disputed Ukrainian language law Posted: 25 Sep 2017 12:23 PM PDT Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday signed into law a controversial language bill which has sparked a standoff with Romania and other east European states. Damascus says Syrian Kurdish autonomy negotiable: report Posted: 26 Sep 2017 01:07 AM PDT The Syrian government is open to negotiations with Kurds over their demand for autonomy within Syria's borders, the foreign minister has said, striking a conciliatory tone as military tensions worsen between the sides in eastern Syria. Walid al-Moualem said the government could discuss the Kurdish demand once Islamic State is defeated, state news agency SANA reported, citing an interview with Russia Today. "This topic is open to negotiation and discussion and when we are done eliminating Daesh (Islamic State), we can sit with our Kurdish sons and reach an understanding on a formula for the future," Moualem said. |
British tourist mauled to death in Greece by rabid wolves not stray dogs, coroner believes Posted: 26 Sep 2017 01:47 AM PDT A British woman believed to have died after being mauled by feral dogs in Greece may have been attacked by rabid wolves, a coroner has said. The woman, named locally as Celia Hollingworth, of Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, was reported missing on Thursday. The 62-year-old disappeared while walking back to her accommodation in Maroneia, in the northern part of the country, following a visit to the nearby archaeological site of Mesimvria. Coroner Nikolaos Kifinidis told The Times that the condition of remains found on Saturday suggested she was not attacked by stray dogs. "It seems like she may have been attacked by other wild animals, like rabid wolves and jackals," he said. According to animal welfare campaigners, there are an estimated one million stray dogs in Greece, however wolves are common to the wooded region. Reports suggest that Ms Hollingworth tried to contact her relatives in London after being attacked, but lost signal on her phone. Ms Hollingworth worked as an administrator at the University of Bristol and latterly dedicated her time to raising money for causes including Syrian refugees. A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "We are working closely with officers in Greece regarding the formal identification of the deceased. "We are also working with colleagues from the Foreign Office and supporting her next of kin at this difficult time." A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are in contact with Greek police in relation to a British woman missing in northern Greece since Thursday. "We are also providing consular assistance to her family." The archaeological site of Mesimvria is is northern Greece |

Iraqi Kurdish leader says 'yes' vote won independence referendum Posted: 26 Sep 2017 11:38 AM PDT By Maher Chmaytelli and Ahmed Rasheed BAGHDAD/ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said on Tuesday that Kurds had voted "yes" to independence in a referendum held in defiance of the government in Baghdad and which had angered their neighbors and their U.S. allies. The Kurds, who have ruled over an autonomous region within Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, consider Monday's referendum to be an historic step in a generations-old quest for a state of their own. Iraq considers the vote unconstitutional, especially as it was held not only within the Kurdish region itself but also on disputed territory held by Kurds elsewhere in northern Iraq. |
