U.N. refugee agency gives Trump's latest cuts a weary shrug Posted: 18 Sep 2018 03:47 AM PDT The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR declined to criticize U.S. President Donald Trump's cut in refugee resettlement places on Tuesday, saying it was up to the United States to decide on its policy. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. would be capped at 30,000 for fiscal year 2019, a sharp drop from a limit of 45,000 set for 2018. "Decisions on which refugees will be resettled and where they go are made solely by the governments of countries that, like the United States, admit refugees for resettlement," UNHCR spokesman William Spindler told a regular U.N. briefing in Geneva. |

Volvo asks US government for tariff exemption for China-built XC60 crossover SUV Posted: 17 Sep 2018 06:34 AM PDT Volvo is the latest automaker to ask the U.S. government for an exemption from steep tariffs on Chinese-made SUVs, Reuters reported Friday. Buick asked trade officials in July for an exemption from a 25-percent tariff on its China-made Envision SUV earlier this year, although Volvo's interest in seeking relief from the measure is far greater. In August, the XC60 accounted for more than 31 percent of overall sales for Volvo, according to the automaker. Since May, the U.S. has imported most of its Volvo XC60 models from China, although the automaker originally imported them from its factory in Sweden when the car was launched. Unlike Buick, which petitioned for an exemption for 40,000 of its China-built Envision crossover, Volvo is seeking an unlimited exemption for XC60 crossovers built in China, according to Reuters. Earlier this year, Volvo opened its first North American production facility near Charleston, S.C., where it builds the S60 sedan and eventually the XC90 full-size crossover. DON'T MISS: Global trade war prompts Volvo to put brakes on its IPO In its letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, Volvo said it could eventually build the XC60 crossover in America, but said that a proposed 25-percent tariff would be unfairly passed to consumers. When Volvo opened its North American plant in June, CEO Hakan Samuelsson said that steep tariffs could threaten jobs at that plant and that eliminating global trade restrictions was the "right way" for the auto industry. "We will export as many cars from this factory as we will import in the U.S...That is a good example of how trade with cars should work in an open and free economy," he said in June. |
US, Russia clash at UN over North Korea sanctions Posted: 17 Sep 2018 09:59 AM PDT The United States on Monday accused Russia of "cheating" on UN sanctions against North Korea with plans for a railway project, oil transfers and ongoing business dealings with Pyongyang. Russia shot back and charged that Washington was blocking steps to foster cooperation between North and South Korea and using a UN sanctions committee "as a select channel to punish" North Korea. |

Two Koreas hold high-stakes summit with nuclear talks in jeopardy Posted: 17 Sep 2018 08:08 AM PDT The inter-Korean summit will be a litmus test for another meeting Kim has recently proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump, giving clues to whether Kim is serious about denuclearization, a commitment he made at their first encounter in June. Trump has asked Moon to be "chief negotiator" between himself and Kim, according to Moon's aides, after Trump canceled a trip to Pyongyang by his secretary of state last month. "I'd like to have frank dialogue with Chairman Kim on how to find a point of contact between U.S. demands for denuclearization and North Korea's demands for ending hostile relations and security guarantees," Moon told a meeting with senior secretaries on Monday. |

U.S. pushes back national wireless alert test to Oct. 3 Posted: 17 Sep 2018 08:40 AM PDT The test message was originally scheduled for 2:18 p.m. EDT (1818 GMT)on Thursday but is being pushed back to the same time on Oct. 3 because of response efforts to Tropical Depression Florence, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in a statement. FEMA, which will send the alert, said last week that the messages would bear the headline "Presidential Alert," and that phones will make a loud tone and have a special vibration. The test has been scheduled to ensure that the alert system would work in the event of a national emergency, and U.S. cellphone users will not be able to opt out. |

Dad attempts a nice – but absurdly unsuccessful – panoramic photo of his daughter Posted: 17 Sep 2018 10:47 AM PDT Dads and technology don't always mix. Just ask Simran, a 21-year-old Twitter user whose father recently tried to show off his photo skills using his iPhone X's panoramic feature, but failed miserably. SEE ALSO: Man poses with incredible cucumber and inspires an awesome photoshop battle On Saturday, Simran tweeted two panoramic photographs her dad took of her on their family vacation. While the panoramic feature is most often used to capture especially wide landscape shots, Simran's Hip Dad doesn't play by the rules. "My dad told me to stand by the apples because he said he discovered a new way to take pano pics vertically. I agreed to it and this was the result," Simran told Mashable via Twitter. I'm mad asf," Simran tweeted alongside two photos of herself looking like an optical illusion. "When he saw them he said 'they look great' and then I saw them and completely lost it. I mean, are you kidding me? I look like an Alien," she said, noting that several people on Twitter have compared her to Kanye West and Lil Pump in their music video for "I Love It."
