Nigeria's Buhari absent again from cabinet meeting Posted: 03 May 2017 04:29 AM PDT Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari failed to show up for a weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, despite assurances from his wife that his health was not a cause for concern. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo chaired the meeting in the absence of the 74-year-old Buhari, who has now missed the last three gatherings of senior ministers and advisors. Buhari has been under growing pressure to disclose his state of health since he returned from the British capital in early March after nearly two months away. |

Same-sex couple can seek damages from Kentucky clerk: U.S. appeals court Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT A federal appeals court on Tuesday revived a damages lawsuit against Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who in 2015 refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it conflicted with her Christian beliefs. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati said a lower court judge erred in finding that damages claims by David Ermold and David Moore became moot, after a new state law last July excused clerks like Davis, from Rowan County, from having to sign marriage license forms. While the couple eventually did get a license, a three-judge appeals court panel said they could sue over Davis' initial refusal to grant one, after the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2015 said the Constitution guaranteed a right to same-sex marriage. |

White House warns of government shutdown if Democrats 'don't behave better' Posted: 02 May 2017 03:51 PM PDT Speaking during the daily White House press briefing, Mr Mulvaney sought to clarify an earlier tweet series from President Donald Trump in which he said that the US needs a "good 'shutdown' to fix mess!" after Congress reached a budget deal that will keep the government open until September but didn't include funding for some of the president's top spending priorities. Mr Trump also suggested in the tweets that removing the the Senate filibuster might be a good strategy to pushing through his policies. "I think the president is frustrated with the fact that he negotiated in good faith with the Democrats and they went out to try to spike the football and make him look bad," Mr Mulvaney said. |

Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescued Posted: 02 May 2017 02:40 PM PDT Fourteen-month-old Brandon Emery unwittingly locked himself in the car last week during a shopping trip with his mom. Don't worry, though — he made it out just fine. And he seems to have had an extremely fun experience. According to CBS News, the toddler climbed from the backseat into the front of his mother's unlocked car while she unloaded groceries at a store in Bude, United Kingdom. After she closed the trunk, but before she got back into the car, Brandon pushed the "lock" button. Whoops. SEE ALSO: People are sharing the weird little things that really annoy their mums Luckily, firefighters arrived quickly to save the day. And when Brandon decided to put a coin in his mouth, they swiftly broke the car window and pulled him to safety — making what could have been a terrifying experience a pretty funny one instead. Brandon, for his part, looked thrilled the whole time. "He was clearly traumatised by the whole ordeal," his mom joked on Facebook. And he got some early driving practice! Nice. US cop who killed unarmed black man guilty of rights charge Posted: 02 May 2017 07:06 PM PDT A South Carolina policeman who was filmed shooting an unarmed black man in the back after a traffic stop pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful killing while performing official duties, which could bring up to life in prison. The Justice Department said that former North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael Slager, 35, agreed to the single federal charge five months after a jury failed to convict him of murder in the case. "The Department of Justice will hold accountable any law enforcement officer who violates the civil rights of our citizens by using excessive force," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. |

He said he'd felt "slightly nauseous" to think he might have tipped the election outcome but in hindsight would change nothing. |
Nightmare scenario: Report says no new iPhone 8 this year Posted: 02 May 2017 08:12 AM PDT More and more analysts, including insiders with accurate track records at predicting Apple's moves, expect the iPhone 8 to be unveiled this fall alongside the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. But that's where the good news ends, because they all seem to think Apple will delay the actual release of the new phone by several months. A recent series of research notes said the iPhone 8 could be delayed for up to two months, and Apple might not launch it until some point in November. If you hated those reports, then you're surely not going to like the new one that popped up on Tuesday, which says Apple might not release the iPhone 8 at all this year.
The bad news comes from Deutsche Bank, which sent a new note to investors on Sunday, according to Business Insider. "Report suggests no new iPhone 8 this calendar year," the analysts wrote. "As we have written in previous [research notes], several supply chain reports have suggested that key component shortages and technical challenges could delay the release of a high-end iPhone 8 device this fall. We believe this report further underscores the uncertainty around the timing of Apple's next- generation iPhone model." The note Deutsche Bank refers to is a story from ValueWalk, which said last week that sources close to Foxconn stated Apple won't be releasing the iPhone 8 this year. While we can't expect any official comment from Apple on such rumors, the ValueWalk report is based on an apparent lack of orders for packaging materials. The same report said that the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will arrive on schedule, as the packaging materials for these devices will be delivered in June. So far, ValueWalk and Deutsche Bank's reports are the only ones that suggest there might not be an iPhone 8 launch this year. What seems to be more than clear at this point, however, is that Apple's next flagship is facing some kind of delay. Whether that delay is one month or several months remains to be seen. |

US tests nuclear-capable missile with the range to strike North Korea Posted: 03 May 2017 04:36 AM PDT The US has test-fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile from a site in California, the second such launch in a week, amid rising tensions with North Korea. The unarmed Minuteman 3 missile has a range of around 8,000 miles, putting it within striking distance of Pyongyang. It blasted off just after midnight from Vandenberg Air Force Base, 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and delivered a single projectile to a target approximately 4,200 miles away at Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, US Air Force Global Strike Command said. |

One of the biggest names in American comedy and the host of last February's Oscars, Kimmel used the opening monologue of his "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" show to announce the arrival last month of his son Billy, who appeared at first to be a healthy newborn. Doctors and medical staff quickly determined that Billy, Kimmel's second born child, had a serious birth defect requiring immediate open heart surgery followed by years of monitoring and future medical procedures. |

Hillary Clinton: I would have beaten Donald Trump if it hadn't been for Comey's FBI letter Posted: 02 May 2017 01:37 PM PDT Hillary Clinton has said that she would now be president if the election was held before a letter from FBI Director James Comey about her emails was published with less than two weeks to the vote. Ms Clinton was speaking at the Women for Women International forum in New York when she was doing what she called an "excruciating analysis" of the 2016 presidential election against Donald Trump. "If the election were on October 27, I'd be your president," Ms Clinton said, referring to the 28 October letter Mr Comey sent to Congressional leaders saying the FBI would continue investigating whether Ms Clinton sent additional classified emails from a private email server while she was Secretary of State. |

Maybe Tim Cook should blame the iPhone 7’s three-year-old design for declining sales Posted: 03 May 2017 06:18 AM PDT Apple on Tuesday afternoon reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that were largely in line with expectations. Revenue climbed to $52.9 billion from $50.2 billion in the year-ago quarter, and net profit came in at $11 billion. Second-quarter guidance that missed analysts' consensus estimate was largely responsible for driving Apple shares down in after-hours trading, but another troubling line item offered some cause for concern: Sales of the iPhone, Apple's chief moneymaker, dropped to 50.76 million units from 51.2 million units in the same quarter last year. Chief executive Tim Cook was quick to blame the rumor mill for the continued slow-down in iPhone sales. Of course, there is no question that rumors of a completely redesigned iPhone 8 played a role in convincing some people to hold off on upgrading old iPhones. But there's also no question that something else is responsible in part for slowing iPhone sales, and we all know that something else is the iPhone 7. A narrative formed on gadget blogs ahead of Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus unveiling last September. Because the new iPhones featured a design that looked just like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, many bloggers labeled the phones "boring." Once the new phones were released, anyone who actually picked up a new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and used it instantly knew it wasn't boring at all. But there's little question that people continued to judge these books by their covers following their launch. Apple took a chance when it decided to recycle the same iPhone design for a second year. Since the launch of the iPhone 3GS in 2009, Apple has trained its user base to expect a fresh new iPhone design every other year. Since 2015 was an "S" year, 2016's iPhone 7 should have offered users a new look and feel in addition to all the new features and upgrades. Instead, we got the same iPhone for a third consecutive year, but with a fresh coat of paint. Well, it turns out that a fresh coat of paint wasn't enough for some customers. "In general, what we are seeing, we're seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone, which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones," Cook said on Tuesday's earnings call. "And so that part is clearly going on and it could be what's behind the data. I don't know but we are seeing that in full transparency." Again, there is absolutely no question that the rumor mill shares the blame for the continued decline in Apple's iPhone business. The same can be said each and every year. The iPhone is the most beloved consumer electronics device in the world, and people want to know what's coming next. Details begin to leak more than a year before each new iPhone launches, and the iPhone 8 was no different. This time around, however, the details that have leaked so far paint a picture of an exciting new iPhone design made of glass and stainless steel with an OLED display, ultra-thin bezels, and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen itself. Meanwhile, the latest iPhones sitting on store shelves look just like the iPhones from 2015, which look just like the iPhones from 2014. 50.76 million iPhones is a whole lot of iPhones. Apple earned $11 billion in profit last quarter. The company's cash stockpile grew to $256.8 billion — that's more than a quarter of a trillion dollars. It was a massive, massive quarter. But if you're going to attempt to explain away the continued slide in iPhone sales, not mentioning Apple's three-year-old iPhone 7 design is oblivious at best and disingenuous at worst. |
Frog scares the crap out of dog and 2 humans, doggo goes back for toy Posted: 02 May 2017 05:27 PM PDT A really good scare can send anyone running for the hills, even good dogs. Mike, his dog Lucky, and his girlfriend Leila were looking through some old patio furniture for a table recently when Mike moved a ladder and spotted a frog. Mike, who admits he's terrified of "anything that moves" went running, and set off a chain reaction with Leila and Lucky in tow. Mike shared the video on Twitter, which has since racked up over 36,000 retweets at the time of writing. Iran's reformist ex-president backs Rouhani reelection Posted: 03 May 2017 12:14 AM PDT Iran's reformist former president Mohammad Khatami has skirted a media ban to endorse moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani for a second term over conservative challengers in a tight May 19 election. Khatami, who during his 1997-2005 presidency oversaw a rapprochement with the West, has been barred from speaking openly since mass protests against the disputed reelection of his hardline successor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009. The hardliner's replacement by Rouhani in 2013 has seen a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that led to the lifting of most international economic sanctions but is threatened by a tougher stance from the new US administration of Donald Trump. |
