Joy in Nobel winner Malala's hometown, though some Pakistanis decry her Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:21 PM PDT By Asif Shahzad MINGORA, Pakistan (Reuters) - In the Pakistani hometown of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, reminders are frequent of the daughter of scenic northwestern Swat Valley who survived a gun attack – and so are memories of harsh rule by the Taliban. Yousafzai is visiting Pakistan for the first time since the Pakistani Taliban - now on the run but still able to launch attacks - shot her in the head in 2012 over her advocacy for girls' education and opposition to Islamist militancy. By late Friday it was not yet clear whether security considerations would allow Yousafzai to return to Swat Valley, but many are eagerly awaiting her. |

Judge says undocumented teens in U.S. custody must have abortion access Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:48 PM PDT U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan also certified a class action of similar minor children to challenge the administration's policy. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services'(HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement ("ORR") had last March adopted a policy prohibiting federally funded shelters from taking "any action that facilitates" abortions without approval from its director. |

Grief and rage at funeral for police shooting victim in Sacramento Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:54 PM PDT Hundreds of mourners joined an outpouring of grief and rage Thursday at the funeral of an unarmed black man shot dead by police in California's capital Sacramento. The service, where civil rights activist Al Sharpton delivered an angry, rousing speech, became a rallying point for people demanding justice in the face of police violence against African Americans. Body camera and surveillance helicopter footage released last week showed police chasing and then firing 20 rounds at 22-year-old Stephon Clark, fearing that he was carrying a weapon. |

America Must Drop Its Delusions about Dealing with Russia Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:27 AM PDT For too long, the U.S. national-security community has oscillated in its assessment of the Russian Federation, swinging between viewing Moscow as the country's number one geopolitical threat to dismissing the challenge of a nation whose per capita GDP equals that of Portugal. This has led to the worst of all satisficing comprises: an approach that views Russia as a competitor and adversary, but which does not require a great deal of investment, because the unstoppable Russian threat of today will evaporate when Russia inevitably collapses under the weight of its economic, political and demographic contradictions. |

Syria rebel group upbeat on Douma talks but denies deal Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:29 AM PDT BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Syrian rebel group said on Friday that U.N.-mediated talks with Russia were "heading in the right direction" but denied it had agreed to evacuate the last insurgent-held enclave in eastern Ghouta. The town of Douma, controlled by the Jaish al-Islam rebel group, is the last patch of eastern Ghouta still held by insurgents who have been routed in a ferocious offensive by the Russian-backed Syrian military that began in February. Its recovery would seal a major victory for President Bashar al-Assad, crushing the last big rebel stronghold near Damascus seven years into a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. |

Donald Trump 'tells Vladimir Putin: "If there is an arms race, 'I’ll win"' Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:42 AM PDT Donald Trump is said to have told Vladimir Putin that if the US and Russia had an arms race, the US would win. Mr Trump reportedly made the comments during a congratulatory call with Mr Putin last week after the Russian leader was unsurprisingly reelected as president. Mr Putin's claim that new nuclear-capable weapons could reach the US "really got under the president's skin", an official told NBC News. |
Thai junta vows to lift politics ban in June Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:50 AM PDT Thailand's junta will lift a near four-year ban on political activity in June, an official said Friday, as space for debate slowly expands in the kingdom with polls promised for next year. Political gatherings of five or more people have been outlawed since Thailand's army grabbed power in a May 2014 coup, booting Yingluck Shinawatra's elected government from power. Politicians have demanded the ban is lifted, while critics accuse the junta of buying time to bolster the chances of new army-linked parties in the upcoming election. |

China's aircraft carrier spotted in huge naval drill Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:45 AM PDT Beijing flexed its military muscle this week as its sole operational aircraft carrier apparently took part in a huge naval drill with dozens of other vessels in the South China Sea, satellite images showed. The pictures, taken by Planet Labs Inc., appear to show the Liaoning carrier at the centre of a formation of more than 40 other ships lined up in pairs south of China's Hainan province island on Monday. China's defence ministry refused to confirm whether the Liaoning took part in drills this week but military experts say the aircraft carrier is identifiable. |
