New security measures (and massive lines) announced for all flights to the US

New security measures (and massive lines) announced for all flights to the US

180 airlines flying over 300,000 people a day into the US will have to comply with new "enhanced security measures" for electronic devices, the Department for Homeland Security announced on Wednesday.

The new security measures, which have not been described in detail, will need to be implemented at speed by the airlines. Passengers flying on any airline that does not implement the new security measures will not be able to bring anything bigger than a cellphone under the new regulations.

The new measures seem to be the ultimate evolution of a laptop ban that the US announced back in March, which affected passengers on most airlines flying from the Middle East. The new security measures will affect carry-on and checked luggage, the DHS confirmed, but should now allow those airlines affected by the laptop ban to allow passengers to carry laptops on once again, provided the new security measures are implemented.

Those security measures have not been specified, but the DHS says that it will be a mixture of visible and behind-the-scenes changes. Among the changes is likely to be deeper scrutiny of individual passengers, as well as more detailed searches of electronic devices.

The DHS said that passengers "may want to prepare for a bit more extensive screening process," although an official added that "intensive doesn't always mean slower."

Logical additional screening methods could include routine swabs of electronic devices to look for explosive residue -- something that's already done on a case-by-case basis -- as well as requiring passengers in some cases to power up laptops and demonstrate that they're working.

According to reporting from multiple news outlets, Israeli intelligence idenitified an ISIS plot to use a laptop bomb to attack an airliner several months ago. That intelligence was behind the laptop ban in March. The source of that intelligence is also reported to have been leaked to Russia by President Trump during a White House meeting.

China's verdant 'forest city' will fight pollution with a million plants

Posted: 27 Jun 2017 01:17 PM PDT

China's verdant 'forest city' will fight pollution with a million plantsIf tree-covered skyscrapers act like enormous air filters, this cluster of buildings will be a clean air oasis. China has broken ground on a "forest city" in the southern city of Liuzhou. The development, which will span two-thirds of a mile along the Liujiang River, involves blanketing offices, apartments, hotels, and schools with more than a million plants and about 40,000 trees. SEE ALSO: How drones are helping to plant trees The verdant towers will help soak up urban air pollution, produce clean oxygen, and boost local biodiversity. The greenery also provides shade on sunny days and acts as an insulating blanket during winter, allowing tenants to use less heating and electricity. Liuzhou Forest City will span 175 hectares, or 0.67 miles, along the Liujiang River.Image: stefano boeri architettiIf the concept sounds familiar, that's because these buildings are the work of Stefano Boeri Architetti, the same architecture firm behind the two "vertical forest" buildings planned for Nanjing in eastern China.  Liuzhou city officials commissioned the Italian company to build the development, which will host about 30,000 people and be connected to the main Liuzhou city — population 3.8 million — via a fast-rail line used by electric cars. The forest city, now under construction, is expected to be completed by 2020, the Milan-based architects confirmed by email. 'Vertical forest' buildings in the Liuzhou development.Image: stefano boeri architettiThe development is a flashy but tiny effort to combat the dangerous smog and toxic air pollution that's choking China's industrialized cities. It comes as China is building more wind and solar power than any country in the world to slash emissions from coal plants, factories, and vehicles, and to combat climate change. Stefano Boeri's firm, which recently completed two verdant towers in Milan, is planning to expand into other smoggy cities, including China's Shijiazhuang, Guizhou, Shanghai, and Chongqing. In the Liuzhou Forest City, buildings, parks, and gardens will absorb almost 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of fine dust pollutants per year, while producing about 900 tons of oxygen, the architects said in a press release.  By comparison, the two green towers in Nanjing will absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide and produce 0.06 tons of oxygen.  An electric railway will link the 'forest city' to the main Liuzhou city.Image: stefano boeri architettiBeyond sucking up toxic air, the urban greenery is also expected to stifle noise pollution and support biodiversity by providing a habitat for the local birds, insects, and small animals that inhabit Liuzhou. The project will include residential areas, commercial and recreational spaces, plus two schools and a hospital. Along with plants, the buildings will also feature rooftop solar panels to produce clean electricity and use geothermal energy systems for interior air-conditioning. Stefano Boeri Architetti said the Liuzhou Forest City represents its broader effort to design a "new generation" of architecture and urban environments to address climate change. Experts say Petya ransomware is just a ‘test’ for something much worse

Experts say Petya ransomware is just a 'test' for something much worse

A new ransomware attack, modeled after the recent WannaCry exploit, has hit thousands of organizations and users worldwide. But according to a handful of security experts, it's only the tip of the iceberg. The ransomware attack, which encrypts users' files and demands a ransom to unlock them, could just be a test attack, or cover for more malicious damage being done by the virus.

""I'm willing to say with at least moderate confidence that this was a deliberate, malicious, destructive attack or perhaps a test disguised as ransomware. The best way to put it is that Petya's payment infrastructure is a fecal theater," security researcher Nicholas Weaver told KrebsOnSecurity.

His sentiments were echoed by "the grugq," an anonymous security researcher who blogs about security issues. He highlights the same thing as Weaver, namely that the payment infrastructure for the virus is poorly designed.

Normally, ransomware viruses demand payment in Bitcoin to a Bitcoin account that is unique to every victim. That makes it harder to track the Bitcoin, or for researchers to work out the identity of the attackers.

Communication is normally done through the obfuscated Tor protocol, which relies on a distributed web of servers and is impossible for one organization to shut down. In this instance, however, the attackers had one single email address listed for communication. It was quickly shut down by Posteo, the German ISP responsible for the email account. That means that victims will not be able to communicate with the attackers to organize payment or receive decryption codes, effectively meaning any encrypted files will be lost forever, if backups aren't available.

"If this well engineered and highly crafted worm was meant to generate revenue, this payment pipeline was possibly the worst of all options (short of "send a personal cheque to: Petya Payments, PO Box …")," the grugq explains. It's suspicious that such a well-designed piece of ransomware would have such a bad payment system -- unless, of course, the aim was never to make money.

"This is definitely not designed to make money. This is designed to spread fast and cause damage, with a plausibly deniable cover of "ransomware.", the grugq continues.

Weaver confirmed this to Krebs, saying that Petya "appears to have been well engineered to be destructive while masquerading as a ransomware strain."

Attributing blame for cyberattacks is always difficult, but the high concentration of Ukranian victims -- the attack was originally distributed through Ukranian tax software MeDoc -- raises questions about potential Russian involvement.

EU extends Russia economic sanctions

EU extends Russia economic sanctionsThe European Union on Wednesday formally rolled over damaging economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, saying Moscow had failed to live up to its Ukraine ceasefire commitments. EU leaders endorsed the move last week, charging that Russia had not halted its support for pro-Moscow rebels in eastern Ukraine nor put pressure on them to respect a ceasefire brokered by France and Germany which was meant to help end a deadly conflict dating back to early 2014. The European Council, which groups the EU's 28 member states, said the decision followed a summit briefing on the situation by French and German leaders Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel.

New video shows off every angle of the rumored iPhone 8 design

New video shows off every angle of the rumored iPhone 8 design

We've spent a majority of 2017 poring over dozens and dozens of iPhone 8 leaks. Some have looked surprisingly legitimate while others have been blatant fakes, but something interesting has happened over the past several weeks -- a unified vision of the iPhone 8 has begun to take shape. Unsurprisingly, not all of the leaks line up with one another, but enough do that we've been able to form a relatively complete picture in our heads of what the flagship device will look like.

This week, Steve Hemmerstoffer teamed up with Tiger Mobiles to bring that vision to life.

What you're about to watch is a hands-on video with the "iPhone 8" -- or at least what we expect the iPhone 8 to look like based on all of the recent leaks and rumors. As the creators of the model explain in the video description, the phone you see below "is manufactured via CNC process. It is based upon 3D CAD sourced directly from the factory in charge of building the new iPhone."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW1gx086ZxU

The rumored design and all of the supposed features of the iPhone 8 are represented on the model in the video, from the vertical dual camera setup to the bezel-less display to the weird camera and sensor arrangement of the front of the phone. The power button has also grown by at least a few millimeters, but the volume buttons and the Ring/Silent side switch appear to be mostly unchanged.

There's really nothing new here, but providing the leaked dimensions and specifications that keep popping up are correct, this could be our closest look at the iPhone 8 until Tim Cook brings it out on stage later this year. Or until someone accidentally leaves a unit in an airplane.

White House clashes with journalists over 'inflammatory' accusations of 'fake news'The White House press office and reporters tasked with covering the President have once again broken out in heated arguments and shouting during the daily press briefing. Early during questioning, White House Deputy Press Secretary was asked by a Brietbart News reporter about tweets from the President overnight calling out a CNN report that had to be retracted following concerns that it had not gone through regular editorial processes. Ms Huckabee Sanders continued to accuse the news media of forgoing coverage of other issues the White House is involved in — in particular, recent efforts to introduce more robotics care options into the Department of Veteran Affairs treatment arsenal, as well has healthcare repeal efforts — saying that reporters have instead placed an outsized focus on the Russia probe into potential collusion between Donald Trump campaign officials and the Russian government.

The Queen is getting a massive pay rise and Twitter isn't impressedAt 91, the Queen might be well beyond her pension age, but that hasn't stopped her from getting a massive pay rise.  SEE ALSO: Baby survives Grenfell, or not: Facebook's fake news problem continues apace A record-breaking performance by the Crown Estate, which owns residential properties, commercial offices, businesses, and land across Britain, means the Queen will get an 8% increase in income from public funds.  The Sovereign Grant, which funds the monarch's household, official travel, and upkeep of palaces, will increase from £76 million ($97 million) in 2017-18 to £82.2 million ($104.9 million) next April.  Not bad, huh? It's a £6 million pay rise.  Now, before the French revolutionary in you starts ranting about royal privilege and taxpayers' money, it has to be reiterated that the Queen's funding is based on the profits of the Crown Estate, whose profits rose by £24 million to reach a new high of £328.8 million.  Sir Alan Reid, whose title is "Keeper of the Privy Purse," defended the Queen, claiming she represents "excellent value for money."  "When you look at these accounts, the bottom line is the Sovereign Grant last year equated to 65p per person, per annum, in the United Kingdom. That's the price of a first class stamp," he said.  Also, Queen's pay rise will take place as refurbishment is taking place at Buckingham Palace, costing £369 million. However, people on Twitter weren't happy, to say the least, about the new funding, linking it to the Grenfell Tower fire: Glad we can find more taxpayer money to fix up Buckingham Palace while hundreds of tower blocks are dangerous. It’s not just you: CNN, New York Times, Reddit, and other sites are all down

It's not just you: CNN, New York Times, Reddit, and other sites are all downA strange outage has struck a number of extremely popular websites this morning, bringing The New York Times, CNN, Reddit, Pinterest, Etsy, and Amazon to their knees in many areas of the country. The downtime is slamming the coasts particularly hard, with huge numbers of reports coming in from both the East Coast as well as Southern California. The issue appears to be linked to the cloud hosting service Fastly, which supports the backends of all these major web destinations, and has been dealing with a "global event." The error manifests itself in failed page loads and a number of different errors ranging from "Maximum threads" to simple "Could not load" notifications. "Fastly is reporting a global event on our network at this time; multiple teams are responding and investigating," the company's first notice of downtime reads. The company followed up by noting that the it identified the issue and was working on implementing a fix, while monitoring the results. The company notes on its Customers page that it supports many of the sites currently dealing with page load errors and other issues, including NYT, Pinterest, Reddit, Wired, and Business Insider. When the unseen companies that support the entire structure of major websites like these experience downtime it can be a serious issue for everyone involved. Depending on the length of downtime, the cost can be absolutely devastating, but it appears that in this case the company has identified and fixed the issue in a rather rapid manner.

Greenland ice sheet meltoff quickens sea levels rise: study

Posted: 27 Jun 2017 09:01 AM PDT

Greenland ice sheet meltoff quickens sea levels rise: studyOcean levels rose 50 percent faster in 2014 than in 1993, with meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet now supplying 25 percent of total sea level increase compared with just five percent 20 years earlier, researchers reported Monday. "This result is important because the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)" -- the UN science advisory body -- "makes a very conservative projection of total sea level rise by the end of the century," at 60 to 90 centimetres (24 to 35 inches), said Peter Wadhams, a professor of ocean physics at the University of Oxford who did not take part in the research. Greenland alone contains enough frozen water to lift oceans by about seven metres (23 feet), though experts disagree on the global warming threshold for irreversible melting, and how long that would take once set in motion.
