Iranian tanker sought by US heading toward Greece Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:05 PM PDT An Iranian supertanker with $130 million worth of light crude oil that the U.S. suspects is tied to a sanctioned organization left Gibraltar and was heading east into the Mediterranean Sea on Monday, with its next destination reported to be Greece. The Iran-flagged Adrian Darya 1, previously named Grace 1, set course for Kalamata, Greece, with an estimated arrival on Aug. 25, according to ship tracking service MarineTraffic. The vessel left Gibraltar late Sunday after having been detained for a month in the British overseas territory for allegedly attempting to breach European Union sanctions on Syria. |

US court convicts far-right members over clashes with leftists Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:46 PM PDT Two members of a far-right group were convicted Monday of brawling with anti-fascist demonstrators in New York, as tensions between white supremacists and leftists simmer in the United States. Maxwell Hare, 27, and John Kinsman, 39, members of the Proud Boys group, were found guilty of several counts of attempted assault and rioting by a Manhattan court. A jury decided the pair assaulted four members of Antifa, an anti-fascist group, who were protesting outside an event that Hare and Kinsman had attended on October 12 last year. |

Tucker Carlson: Elizabeth Warren Is ‘Cory Booker-Level’ White Posted: 19 Aug 2019 07:02 PM PDT On his first night back from vacation following the firestorm of controversy he set off by claiming white supremacy is a hoax, Fox News host Tucker Carlson made another cringeworthy comment when he used an African-American senator's supposed lack of blackness to make fun of how white another senator is.During Monday night's broadcast of Tucker Carlson Tonight, Carlson welcomed on frequent guest Mark Steyn—who served as guest host while Carlson was on break—to discuss Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren's public apology to tribal leaders over her Native American DNA test snafu."Like anyone who's being honest with themselves, I know that I have made mistakes. I am sorry for the harm I have caused," Warren said at the Native American Presidential Forum in Iowa on Monday. "I have listened and I have learned—a lot. And I am grateful for the many conversations that we've had together."Tucker Carlson Responds to Critics After Calling White Supremacy a Hoax: 'Calm Down'After accusing the Massachusetts senator of using her previous claims of Native American ancestry to get ahead in her career, Steyn then took the opportunity to crack a joke at her expense. "As I always say, she is the whitest white since Frosty the Snowman fell in a vat of White-Out," the conservative commentator exclaimed. "You can't get any whiter."Carlson, meanwhile, interjected by taking aim at a frequent target of his—Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who also is running for the Democratic presidential nomination."She's Cory Booker-level," the Fox News host cackled.Somewhat ironically, while Carlson was out, Steyn made similar comments about the New Jersey senator. "Meanwhile, you have someone like Cory Booker who's been to Harvard, Oxford, and Yale Law School, the three best universities on the planet, pretending he's like some homie from the hood," Steyn said on Tucker Carlson Tonight earlier this month. Spain sends navy to save migrants as Italian justice intervenes Posted: 20 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT Spain on Tuesday deployed a naval patrol boat to pick up migrants on a charity rescue boat that has been stranded off Italy's Lampedusa island for days after numerous people jumped overboard in a desperate bid to swim ashore. Prosecutor Luigi Patronaggio also ordered the Open Arms charity vessel preventatively seized after inspecting the Spanish boat on which migrants have spent 19 days and "given the difficult situation on board", a judicial source said. Against the backdrop of a major political crisis in Italy, Patronaggio intervened as part of his probe into alleged kidnapping and refusing to obey orders targeting far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. |

CNN Pundit’s Bodyguard Charged with Assault after Removing Reporter Covering Her Speech Posted: 20 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT CNN pundit April Ryan's security guard has been charged with assault after he forcibly removed a local New Jersey reporter from an event at which Ryan was delivering a speech.Charlie Kravotil, editor of New Brunswick Today, claims that Ryan's bodyguard, 30-year-old Joel Morris, approached him during Ryan's speech at The Heldrich Hotel on August 3 and stole his camera after he refused to stop filming.A video of the incident shows Kravotil, who secured press credentials for the event, following Morris into the lobby of the hotel to retrieve his camera. After the local journalist reclaimed his camera, Morris grabbed his arm, placed it behind his back, and shoved him out of the hotel.Morris has been charged with harassment, assault, and theft in connection with the incident.Kravotil says he was invited to the event and was allowed to film for roughly two hours before Ryan took the stage to deliver a speech, at which point Morris stole his camera but allowed other people in the room to continue filming. He called on Ryan to apologize for the incident in a Monday tweet."She's been silent about the unacceptable and illegal behavior of her bodyguard, Joel Morris, and we are still waiting for her comment on this unfortunate incident," Kravotil said in a video posted to Twitter. "Maybe now that there are criminal charges, we might hear something from her. I hope, sincerely, that she does comment and I hope she does condemn this. This is unacceptable. . . . In our country, we have freedom of the press."Ryan is a vociferous critic of President Trump and routinely disparages him for his rhetorical attacks on the press, even authoring a book on the subject last year entitled Under Fire: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House. |

Teens swept up in night raids in Kashmir clampdown Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:55 AM PDT Ali Mohammad Rah sat on the pavement outside a police station in Kashmir's main city of Srinagar on Tuesday, waiting to see his teenage sons, who were swept up in government raids overnight. Government sources say at least 4,000 people have been detained in Kashmir since India revoked the restive Himalayan region's autonomy on August 5 and imposed a massive security lockdown on the restive region. To try and stop the raids, residents in Srinagar's Soura area have erected barricades and dug trenches in roads that lead to their cluster of homes. |
For Trump, appeals to white fears about race may be a tougher sell in 2020: Reuters/Ipsos poll Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:08 AM PDT U.S. President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric and focus on the grievances of white voters helped him win the 2016 election. The analysis comes amid widespread criticism of Trump's racially charged comments about four minority women lawmakers and the fallout from a mass shooting of Hispanics in El Paso, Texas, that many Democratic presidential candidates swiftly blamed on the president's rhetoric. While Reuters did not measure anti-Hispanic biases in 2016, political scientists say that people who express them closely overlap with those who are biased against other racial minorities. |

Detained immigrants sue over conditions, medical care Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:11 AM PDT Immigrants held in U.S. detention facilities filed a lawsuit Monday decrying what they called shoddy medical care and a failure by authorities to provide accommodations for disabilities. In the suit filed by disability and civil rights advocates in U.S. District Court, immigrants said they're placed in isolation as punishment and denied recommended medical treatment and surgery. The problems harm disabled immigrants and threaten anyone in one of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's more than 50,000 detention beds who winds up getting sick or isolated from other detainees, said Monica Porter, staff attorney at Disability Rights Advocates, one of the organizations that filed the suit. |

Gina Lopez, foe of Philippine mining industry, dies at 65 Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:40 AM PDT Former Philippine environment minister Gina Lopez, who led a high-profile fight against the nation's powerful mining industry, died Monday aged 65, her family's media company announced. Lopez rose to international prominence in 2016 by ordering many Philippines mines shuttered on environmental grounds, and also issued a ban on open-pit mining. The Philippines, which is one of the world's top nickel ore producers, has long faced accusations of looking the other way while major firms flout regulations. |
Ousted Sudan dictator Omar al-Bashir 'got $90 million from Saudi royals' Posted: 19 Aug 2019 06:39 AM PDT Omar al-Bashir, the ousted dictator of Sudan, was given $90 million (£74 million) from senior Saudi royals before he was overthrown, investigators said at the start of his corruption trial. Just four months after he was forced from the power, the 75-year-old former strongman sat in a metal cage as prosecutors of the state he once ruled levelled accusations against him. The scene in the Khartoum courtroom illustrated how quickly Bashir had fallen, going from Sudan's all-powerful leader of 30 years to a defendant in a simple white robe and turban. Bashir is charged with illicit possession of foreign currency and accepting gifts through unofficial channels. Ahmed Ali Mohamed, a police detective, told the court that Bashir had admitted to receiving $25 million from Mohammed bin Salman, the powerful crown prince of Saudi Arabia. The detective said Bashir received another $65 million from former King Abdullah, who died in 2015. He said Bashir claimed to have given the money away in donations but gave no details. Al-Bashir was ousted on 11 April after months of protests and some 30 years in power. Credit: STRINGER/EPA-EFE/REX When police raided Bashir's home they reportedly found 6 million Euros in cash, along with $351,000 and around 5 million Sudanese pounds (£91,000). Ahmed Ibrahim, Bashir's lawyer, rejected the allegations against the former president and said it was not unusual for "anyone in his occupation to have foreign currency and it was in a room attached to his office in his presidential residence". "There is no information or evidence with regards to the accusations of illicit gains aimed at Bashir," he added. Testimony about the vast sums of money was closely followed in Sudan, where GDP per capita is only around $4,600. Bashir spoke to confirm his name and age and laughed bitterly when asked about his home address. "Formerly the airport district, at army headquarters but now Kobar prison," he said, referring to a prison where he once jailed political opponents but is now himself a prisoner. Several members of his family were allowed into the heavily-guarded courtroom and shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) as he was brought in. The ousted leader raised his hand in acknowledgement. There was no immediate comment from the Saudi government on the claim that Saudi royals had given Bashir money. Saudi Arabia had been a staunch supporter of Bashir's regime, even as it faced widespread protests that eventually led to his downfall. During the revolution earlier this year, the US grew frustrated with Saudi Arabia's support for Bashir, believing that Riyadh's backing was emboldening the faltering dictator to use violence against civilian demonstrators. Meanwhile, Sudan's post-revolution politics continued to make halting progress towards civilian rule. The military council which has been ruling the country since April signed a deal with protest leaders on Saturday to create a new body that would lead Sudan for the next three years until elections can be held. The 11-member body, known as the sovereign council, will include five military officials and five civilians as well as an independent member. However, the military said on Monday that the protesters had asked for a delay in the council's announcement while they decided amongst themselves who would be their representatives. The military strongly initially resisted any kind of power-sharing agreement but came under intense pressure from both the US and Gulf Arab states to reach an accommodation with the protesters. A deal was reached after negotiations brokered by Ethiopia, the African Union, and Western states |

In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed on Aug. 5, the Pittsburgh-based company said it expects to let go fewer than 200 workers following its decision to halt production at the Michigan facility. In mid-June, the company said it would idle two blast furnaces at its Great lakes and Gary Works plants, citing lower steel prices and softening demand. |
India's Moon probe enters lunar orbit Posted: 20 Aug 2019 10:54 AM PDT India's Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft entered lunar orbit on Tuesday, executing one of the trickiest manoeuvres on its historic mission to the Moon. Ocasio-Cortez: The Electoral College Is a ‘Scam’ Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday called the U.S. Electoral College "a scam" that negatively affects minorities."We're coming to you live from the Electoral College," the New York Democrat said in a video on Instagram, which featured her driving along a sparsely populated highway in what appears to be a desert somewhere in the western part of the country. "Many votes here, as you can see. Very efficient way to choose leadership of the country. I mean I can't think of any other way, can you?"The freshman congresswoman went on to cite a New York magazine story titled, "Here's Every Defense of the Electoral College — and Why They're All Wrong.""Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a 'one person, one vote' system where all our votes are counted equally," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Could you imagine if we had this kind of democracy-altering 'fairness' provision for literally any other group? If we weighed, for example, black and indigenous voters more because of unfairness?""Facts are facts America," said the 29-year-old progressive, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens. "The Electoral College has to go."Several Democratic presidential candidates, including Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and South Bend, Ind. mayor Pete Buttigieg, have also said they believe the Electoral College should be retired. The notion of ending the Electoral College has picked up steam lately in blue states. A number of states have joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would give the states' electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote. But the agreement will not take effect until the electoral votes of participating states total 270. |

Agency director Kelly Susewind authorized the killings of the remaining pack members on July 31. |

The worst attack happened in Dantakuri, the area's political administrator Sanusi Dangi Abbas told AFP. |
Benjamin Netanyahu’s Election Bid Runs Through Kyiv Posted: 19 Aug 2019 11:00 PM PDT (Bloomberg Opinion) -- In the midst of a hotly contested election and a tussle with U.S. Democrats, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu just completed a trip to Ukraine. This is not a hiatus from politics. He is simply moving the campaign trail to Kyiv, 1,800 miles away from the nearest Israeli polling station. The logic of the trip isn't hard to discern. There are almost a million Russian speakers in Israel and they turn out in big numbers for elections. In past elections, roughly 40% have cast ballots for Netanyahu's Likud Party and 30% for the Israeli Bitenu Party, an ethnic Russian list led by Avigdor Lieberman. But that was in the days when the Moldovan-born Lieberman was Netanyahu's loyal ally. That alliance is now over. Lieberman was instrumental in blocking Netanyahu's efforts to build a governing coalition after the last elections, in April. They are now avowed enemies, waging a nasty personal battle on social media and in the press. Polls show Lieberman getting about 45% of the Russian-Israeli vote. If that happens, it is extremely unlikely that Bibi will be able to form a right-wing coalition. It looks like Lieberman will seek to create a broad coalition that includes center-left parties and excludes ultra-orthodox ones. The vast majority of Russian-speakers are hawkish but secular -- many are not even Jewish by orthodox standards — and they rightly regard rabbinical parties as hostile to their civil rights and assimilation into the Israeli mainstream. That animosity is what Lieberman is leveraging, and it's a direct challenge to Netanyahu, who considers the ultra-orthodox his indispensable allies.Netanyahu has touted his friendship with Vladimir Putin to shore up support among the Russian voters. A huge banner featuring the two leaders hangs on the wall outside Likud campaign headquarters in Tel Aviv (there is a banner featuring Trump as well). The slogan "In a Different League" is meant to convey Bibi's status an international statesman as well as Putin's endorsement. But Putin isn't popular with all the immigrants from the former Soviet Union, especially those from Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky, a TV comic and novice politician who was recently, and improbably, elected president of Ukraine, is. Zelensky is a Jew and a fan of Israel's security policies which he sees as a model in his country's low-grade border war with Russia. Twenty years ago, Netanyahu was the first Israeli prime minister to visit Ukraine. That trip, too, took place shortly before an election, but didn't do much good: Bibi was trounced by Ehud Barak. This time, he cast that visit as a matter of statesmanship. He and his host announced the opening of hi-tech interest offices in one another's capitals, a small win for Jerusalem. The rest of the agenda consisted of an official ceremony in which pre-cooked trade documents were signed, a plea to Zelensky to expedite pensions for Israeli Ukrainians (which he has already pledged to support) and a few minor bilateral understandings. More important was a televised pilgrimage to Babi Yar, the World War II murder pit where the bodies of some 30,000 Jews were dumped by German soldiers and their Ukrainian collaborators. Not only was it a "never again" moment, but it Bibi with a chance to rebut critics who charge him with insufficient concern over the rise of neo-Nazi activism in Eastern Europe. In the run-up to the visit, there were also intimations in the Ukrainian and Israeli media that Netanyahu would offer his services as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. He is, after all, one of the few world leaders who has remained neutral in the conflict. If the idea was floated by the Netanyahu visit, to emphasize his stature, neither mentioned it. President Zelensky shared Bibi's interest in playing up the visit. Netanyahu is the first foreign leader he has hosted. Success bolsters Zelensky's image as a serious statesman and sends a message to Jews around the world that regime in Kyiv is friendly. Whether that yields long-term mileage is unclear. With Lieberman holding steady in the polls, it is no longer a foregone conclusion that Netanyahu will lead the next government in Jerusalem. His scavenger hunt to Kyiv less than a month before election day shows just how much every vote counts now. Mormon High Priest Put Creepy Cam Over H&M Changing Room Door: Cops Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:18 AM PDT George Frey/Getty ImagesA high councilor with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was removed from his position on the administration of several Salt Lake City congregations after he was accused of filming a woman in an H&M; dressing room.Steven Murdock, an affidavit alleges, presented himself as an employee and guided the young woman, Alondra Alcala, into a room to try on clothes at the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville on Tuesday. When Alcala began changing, she told officers that she saw a black object at the corner of her stall—then realized it was a phone. "I thought it was a joke," Alcala told FOX 17. "I thought it was a prank, I thought somebody was just messing with me."When Alcala emerged, Murdock reportedly came out of the next stall and tried to delete the photos. When Alcala moved to call police, Murdock's wife allegedly stepped in to try and settle the issue "peacefully" without alerting authorities, The Tennessean reported. "I was kind of cornering him, kind of grabbing his arms, and I did watch him delete photos of me on his phone," said Alcala. "Thankfully I was able to slap it out of his hand and take it and run out."Police arrested Murdock on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful photography, and he was later released from jail the following morning on a $1,000 bond, according to The Tennessean. "Unfortunately, I felt disgusted with myself. I felt like what did I do wrong, what if I wouldn't have done this, or wouldn't have worn this," Alcala said. "I did feel violated, I felt gross, why is this happening to me?"Church spokesperson Eric Hawkins confirmed Monday to WKRN-TV that Murdock was a high councilor and former bishop with the church. Both are volunteer positions, said the spokesman."This type of behavior is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated from any church member," Hawkins said. "When local leaders learned of the arrest and charges, he was immediately removed from all responsibilities."Murdock may also have his church privileges restricted or face a loss of membership, said Hawkins."It's just disappointing to see that, especially someone in that position, isn't meeting that same position themselves," one parishioner told a local news station in Salt Lake City.H&M;'s headquarters said this week that the store is cooperating with local authorities in the investigation. "The safety and well-being of our customers is our first priority," said the statement.Murdock is expected to appear in court on Sept. 6."It can happen to anyone," Alcala told local reporters. "Anyone can be a victim of this: men, women, children, anybody. I would just say be alert, be aware of your surroundings, and don't be afraid to speak up, because this sort of stuff is real."
