US leads sanctions push after NKorea 'escalation' Posted: 05 Jul 2017 04:50 PM PDT The United States led a push at the UN Security Council Wednesday for tougher sanctions on North Korea, while warning the isolated regime's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile had drastically narrowed the path for diplomacy. In a hard-hitting address to the council, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday's ICBM test had made "the world a more dangerous place," and that Washington was ready to use force if need be to deal with the threat of a nuclear-armed Pyongyang. |

A terrifying crocodile relative, with teeth like a T. rex, may have taken on dinosaurs Posted: 05 Jul 2017 11:50 AM PDT Meet "Razana," a gigantic lizard ancestor with the teeth of a T. rex and the body of a crocodile. The prehistoric beast — formally named Razanandrongobe sakalavae — was likely a top predator in Madagascar about 170 million years ago, when dinosaurs also roamed the planet, a team of Italian and French paleontologists said Tuesday. SEE ALSO: 99-million-year-old bird fossil has been found preserved in amber and it's truly exquisite Razana had a massive jaw bone lined with enormous jagged teeth, which were similar in size and shape to those of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the scientists wrote in a study published July 4 in the journal PeerJ. That suggests the teeth were sharp enough to slice through hard tissue such as bone and tendon. An illustration of the head of Razana.Image: Fabio ManucciAlthough the ancient lizard's body was long and lean like that of a modern crocodile, Razana was made even more beastly by its deep skull shape and powerful straight limbs, the fossils indicated. Paleontologists said Razana appears to be by far the oldest and largest representative of a group of croc-like animals called Notosuchians. Little is known about the origin and early evolution of this group, and until now, these animals hadn't been known to exist during the Jurassic period. "Like these and other gigantic crocs from the [more recent] Cretaceous, Razana could outcompete even theropod dinosaurs at the top of the food chain," Cristiano Dal Sasso, the study's lead author and a researcher at the Natural History Museum of Milan, said in a statement. Paleontologists Cristiano Dal Sasso (right) and Simone Maganuco (left) exhibit some skull bones of Razana in Milan.Image: Giovanni BindelliniThe Madagascar fossils are thought to predate other forms of the Notosuchia by 42 million years, according to the study. The Razana seems to have roamed the area when Madagascar, which is now an island, was separating from the giant landmass of southern continents known as Gondwana, Simone Maganuco, a co-author of the study, said in a statement. "It represents a further signal that the Notosuchia originated in southern Gondwana," he said. WATCH: Toy dinosaurs chase real people in this 'Jurassic Park' remake |

Bare-chested Pamplona marchers call for end to bull runs Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:26 AM PDT Around 100 shirtless protesters covered in red powder called for a ban on bullfighting and bull runs as they marched through the streets of Pamplona on Wednesday, in a prelude to the northern Spanish city's famous bull festival. The activists from animal rights groups People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and AnimaNaturalis wore horns on their head and bore slogans including 'Stop Bull Fights' painted in black on their chests. The annual San Fermin festival draws thousands from across the world to brave the 875-metre course through the narrow streets of the medieval city, along which runners in white shirts and red scarves are chased by bulls. |
Tesla responds, questioning IIHS motives after Model S fails to impress in crash test Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:45 AM PDT Tesla's class-leading Model S did not fail the most recent crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, the electric sports sedan did not achieve a top rating in one particular test, the results of which were published late on Wednesday. The test results have caused a bit of a buzz, especially considering how well the Model S had performed in similar tests in the past. And the test in question is a crucial one, designed to judge a vehicle's performance in a front-end collision where the impact occurs on the driver side. Following the release of the test results, Tesla has issued a statement in response to concerns that its flagship sedan did not achieve top scores. The IIHS test in question is designed to assess a vehicle's performance when a collision occurs at the front driver-side corner of the car. The test, referred to by the IIHS as a "small overlap front crash test," simulates a typical impact with a tree or another vehicle. Tesla's Model S achieved the highest possible rating in each of the IIHS's tests aside from the small overlap front crash test, where the sports sedan only managed an "acceptable" rating. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Continental, Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Avalon all received the highest overall rating in the test. Here's a video showing a Model S crash test similar to the one conducted by the IIHS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uecPZvDPQgg According to Reuters, the IIHS determined that the Model S's seat belt and air bags were not effective in the test, and they could fail to prevent the driver's head from striking the steering wheel. In response to the claims made by the IIHS following its most recent round of testing, Tesla issued a statement. "IIHS and dozens of other private industry groups around the world have methods and motivations that suit their own subjective purposes," a Tesla spokesperson said. "The most objective and accurate independent testing of vehicle safety is currently done by the U.S. Government which found Model S and Model X to be the two cars with the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, making them the safest cars in history." Tesla shares slid more than 7% to close at $327.09 on Wednesday. The stock continued to fall during the after-hours session, and was down nearly 3% to $317.50 at the time of this writing. |

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:01 AM PDT Donald Trump rejected the US military's plan for tackling Isis because he thought it was too similar to Barack Obama's, reports suggest. Despite the terrorist group having been all but driven out of Iraq and under threat of losing its strongholds in Syria, the White House is said to have asked officials to come up with new proposals in order to show that Mr Trump is different to his predecessor. Military leaders are reluctant to fundamentally change a strategy that appears to be working, according to the Daily Beast, which quoted two US officials and a senior administration official. |

Qualcomm goes nuclear, seeks total ban on iPhone imports Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:14 PM PDT Qualcomm has ratcheted its legal war with Apple up way past 11. The chipmaker has asked the US International Trade Commission to ban imports of some iPhone and iPad models from the US, on the grounds that they violate six Qualcomm patents. A related lawsuit was also filed in a California court Thursday seeking monetary damages, in addition to the import ban.
Qualcomm is specifically seeking a ban on an Apple products that use baseband modems -- the chips that connect to cell networks -- that are made by companies other than Qualcomm. In addition to seeking a ban on imports, Qualcomm is also seeking to immediately stop any retail sales or advertising of the infringing products. Qualcomm has not confirmed exactly which models of iPhone would be affected, but assuming that any non-Qualcomm modem is excluded, iPhone 7 models for AT&T and T-Mobile (but not Verizon and Sprint) would be banned. Apple has precedent with this kind of action. In 2013, it successfully won a ban from the ITC against certain Samsung smartphones over patent violations. Given the complexity involved in a patent case of this magnitude, an ITC investigation would likely be necessary, a process that takes months at the least. But regardless of the timescale, this is a major escalation in a long-running legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm. At the heart of the matter are patents that Qualcomm holds, and the rates that it is willing to license them for. Qualcomm's patents are key to the manufacturing of any competitive flagship smartphone, but Apple contends that Qualcomm's licensing rates are exorbitant and not "fair" -- something that would be in violation of trade law. Apple and Qualcomm have both sued each other over the issue before, and Apple has even got to the point of instructing its overseas manufacturing partners to not pay royalties to Qualcomm while the issue is resolved. Analysts have suggested that the legal battle could cause real problems for Apple's next generations of device. Qualcomm is easily the largest and most advanced manufacturer of baseband chips for mobile devices, and a breakdown in relations between the two companies could cause massive supply shortages for Apple. Reports have suggested that Apple is seeking other alternatives, but sourcing the necessary volume of components is something that takes years, not months. |

The two leaders presented a series of agreements between India and Israel for cooperation on satellite technology, water and agriculture, as well as the creation of a $40 million innovation fund. The agreements are part of efforts to extend relations in civilian areas between both countries, with Israel already selling India an average of $1 billion per year in military equipment. |

Azeri woman and child killed by rebels near Nagorno-Karabakh boundary: defense ministry Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:14 AM PDT BAKU/YEREVAN (Reuters) - An Azeri woman and a child were killed and another civilian was wounded by Armenian-backed rebels near the boundary with the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan's defense ministry said on Wednesday. Sporadic exchanges of fire in the fight for control over the region - inside Azerbaijan but controlled by ethnic Armenians - have stoked fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the South Caucasus, which is criss-crossed by oil and gas pipelines. "Two residents of the village of Alkhanly, including a two-year-old girl, were killed and one was wounded on July 4 as a result of shelling by Armenian forces," Azeri defense ministry spokesman Vagif Dergakhly told a news conference. |

Exclusive: Kurdish YPG militia expects conflict with Turkey in northern Syria Posted: 05 Jul 2017 12:59 PM PDT By Rodi Said and Dominic Evans QAMISHLI, Syria/ANKARA (Reuters) - The head of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said on Wednesday that Turkish military deployments near Kurdish-held areas of northwestern Syria amounted to a "declaration of war" which could trigger clashes within days. Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus retorted that his country was not declaring war but that its forces would respond to any hostile move by the YPG, which he described as a small-scale army formed by the United States. The mounting tensions between two U.S. allies in northwestern Syria risk opening yet another front in the multi-sided conflict, in which outside powers are playing ever greater roles. |

The meeting, due to be held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg on Friday, will be closely watched at a time when ties between the two countries remain strained by U.S. allegations of Russian election hacking, Syria, Ukraine and a U.S. row over Trump associates' links to Moscow. "This is the first meeting, the first time the two presidents will get acquainted - this is the main thing about it," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters. |
