US issues global travel alert due to 'increased terrorist threats' Posted: 23 Nov 2015 03:17 PM PST The United States issued a worldwide travel alert on Monday warning American citizens of "increased terrorist threats" in the wake of the Paris attacks. A massive manhunt is underway in France and Belgium for Belgian-born Salah Abdeslam, suspected of playing a role in the coordinated shooting and suicide bombings of November 13 claimed by the Islamic State group. The United States has been on heightened alert in the wake of the attacks, which killed 130 people. |
France finds explosive belt, detects Paris suspect's phone Posted: 23 Nov 2015 01:15 PM PST By Chine Labbé and Gabriela Baczynska PARIS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A suspected explosive belt was found dumped near Paris on Monday and the mobile phone of a fugitive believed to have taken part in the attacks on Nov. 13 was detected in two locations in the city, a source close to the investigation said. France and Belgium have launched a manhunt following the attacks that killed 130 people, with a focus on Brussels barkeeper Salah Abdeslam, 26, who returned to the city from Paris hours after the attacks and is still at large. Abdeslam's mobile phone was detected after the attacks in the 18th district in the north of Paris, near an abandoned car that he had rented, and then later in Chatillon in the south, the source said on Monday. |
U.S. appeals court rules against Wisconsin abortion doctor law Posted: 23 Nov 2015 04:08 PM PST (Reuters) - A Wisconsin law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital is unconstitutional, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Monday, addressing a topic the U.S. Supreme Court is considering during its current term. Abortion providers in Wisconsin had challenged the state law, which requires doctors to have privileges at a hospital within 30 miles (50 km). A federal judge in March permanently blocked the Wisconsin law, ruling that the health benefits, if any, were outweighed by the burden on women's health caused by restricted access to abortion. |
New York prepares for Thanksgiving parade as Islamic State threat looms Posted: 23 Nov 2015 12:24 PM PST David Huddle and his daughter Megan, a flute player for the North Hardin High School marching band in Kentucky, have been preparing for more than a year for the band's performance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. "The main goal of a terrorist attack is to create terror," David Huddle said in a phone interview. Millions of New Yorkers and tourists are expected to line the streets on Thursday for the parade, more than a week after Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, released a video showing images of New York juxtaposed with a scene depicting a suicide bomber preparing for an attack. |
U.S. issues travel warning, sees 'increased terrorist threats' Posted: 23 Nov 2015 02:49 PM PST The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert on Monday warning U.S. citizens of the risks of traveling because of what it described as "increased terrorist threats." "Current information suggests that (Islamic State), al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions," the department said in a warning posted on its website. A State Department official noted that the agency has issued worldwide travel alerts in the past and said this latest alert effectively updated past warnings. |
'Explosives belt' found in Paris suburb Posted: 23 Nov 2015 01:46 PM PST A suspected suicide belt with a similar "configuration" to those used in the Paris attacks was found Monday just south of the French capital, sources close to the investigation said. The object was found in a dustbin in the suburb of Montrouge, a police source said, adding that the device lacked a detonator. Telephone data places Belgian-born Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the attacks who is believed to still be on the run, in the same area on the night of the attacks, according to a source close to the inquiry. |
