ICE Spokesman Quits, Bashes Trump Administration On Immigration Raids Posted: 13 Mar 2018 02:48 AM PDT A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Francisco resigned over the Trump administration's handling of a recent immigrant raid in the Bay Area. James Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle late Monday that administration officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump, grossly exaggerated the number of undocumented immigrants who avoided arrest after Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the public days before the raid began on Feb. 25. "Efforts by local politicians have shielded removable criminal aliens from immigration enforcement and created another magnet for more illegal immigration, all at the expense of the safety and security of the very people it purports to protect," the agency said in a statement. |
Turkey seeks life term for U.S. pastor over failed coup: Dogan Posted: 13 Mar 2018 06:32 AM PDT By Ece Toksabay ANKARA (Reuters) - A Turkish prosecutor on Tuesday sought a life sentence for a U.S. pastor over alleged links to a failed coup attempt in 2016, Dogan news agency reported, a move that threatens to undermine efforts to mend bilateral ties. Washington believes Andrew Brunson, who has been in jail since December 2016, is one of several Americans unjustly detained in Turkey. During a visit to Ankara last month, former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called for him to be freed. |

NRA tweets glamour shot of AR-15 while students hold National School Walkout protesting gun violence Posted: 14 Mar 2018 12:25 PM PDT The NRA had a pretty tactless response to the National School Walkout on Wednesday. March 14 marks one month since the tragic mass shooting in Parkland, Fla. that left 17 people dead, and students nationwide are walking out of classes to honor those who died and protest gun violence. On a day being used to remember children killed by an AR-15, the National Rifle Association, a pro-gun lobbying group, tweeted a photo of an AR-15 with the caption, "I'll control my own guns, thank you." SEE ALSO: These images from the National School Walkout are powerful beyond belief I'll control my own guns, thank you. #2A #NRA pic.twitter.com/jqbZzwcWf6 — NRA (@NRA) March 14, 2018 The NRA's tweet was quickly met with backlash. Cameron Kasky, a Parkland survivor who has become an outspoken advocate for gun control, made fun of the NRA. "This for some reason reminds me of a whining toddler screaming 'I'M NOT TIRED' while being sent to bed," he tweeted at the NRA. This for some reason reminds me of a whining toddler screaming "I'M NOT TIRED" when being sent to bed — Cameron Kasky (@cameron_kasky) March 14, 2018 Twitter user David Ruske pointed out that the NRA has become more extremist over time in its defense of guns. Ruske explained that when he was younger, he took safety courses from the NRA, which "provided lessons of value." Since then, he says the organization seems to promote a "dangerous agenda." In short, there is such a thing as reasonable gun control. As a kid, I took an NRA hunter safety course; the NRA provided lessons of value. The NRA I see today is something very different, and seems to be promoting an extreme and dangerous agenda. — Dave Ruske (@daveruske) March 14, 2018 Twitter user Sabra Williams pointed out that the NRA's tweet didn't make much sense. Since the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, an estimated 7,000 children have died from gun violence in and outside of schools. How's that working out for ya? 7,000 kids dead since #Sandyhook #BloodOnYourHands — sabra williams (@sabraarbas) March 14, 2018 An hour before tweeting the glamour shot, the NRA posted a video pushing to "secure our schools and stop school violence" by arming school officials with guns. Let's work together to secure our schools and stop school violence. We protect our banks, our sports stadiums and our government buildings better than we protect our schools. That must change. #StopSchoolViolenceAct #DefendTheSecond #NRA pic.twitter.com/98dWIv0giM — NRA (@NRA) March 14, 2018 Just yesterday, three children were injured (none seriously) when their teacher accidentally discharged a gun in a classroom during a demonstration on gun safety. Thousands of students around the country took part in the National School Walkout on Wednesday. Some stood for a 17 minute moment of silence to honor the victims of the Parkland shooting, while others held signs and chanted for in protest for gun reform. Although some rallies were limited to school properties, students in larger cities like New York and Miami took to the streets to lead a city-wide protest. Posted: 14 Mar 2018 10:06 AM PDT Republicans searching for a silver lining in the returns from the nail-biting special congressional election in western Pennsylvania may as well admit it. True, their candidate Rick Saccone came tantalisingly close. Whoever is eventually confirmed as the victor will have to resume campaigning almost immediately ahead of the midterm elections in November, and for votes in a seat that will look very different from the one he just competed for. |

Lead poisoning may hasten death for millions in US: study Posted: 12 Mar 2018 10:52 PM PDT Compared to people with little or no lead in their blood, those with high levels -- at least 6.7 milligrammes per decilitre (mg/dl) -- were 37 percent more likely to die early, according to a new study in The Lancet Public Health, a leading medical journal. The risk of succumbing to coronary heart disease doubled in such cases, the study found. "Low levels of lead exposure are an important, but largely ignored, risk factor for death from cardiovascular disease," mainly heart attacks and strokes, said lead author Bruce Lanphear, a professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada. |
Russian broadcaster RT could be forced off UK TV over spy crisis Posted: 13 Mar 2018 10:09 AM PDT Britain's media regulator Ofcom said Russian broadcaster RT could lose its UK license if Theresa May's government determines that Moscow was behind the poisoning of a former Russian double agent in England this month. RT, or Russia Today, is a round-the-clock news network that is funded by Vladimir Putin's government. With tensions growing between London and Moscow over the attack on Sergei Skripal, and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, some lawmakers have said RT should be blocked in Britain. |

Utah courthouse shooting video released Posted: 13 Mar 2018 06:14 AM PDT Dramatic video of a deadly 2014 courthouse shooting in Salt Lake City has been released after a long court battle by the Utah Media Coalition. The video shows a U.S. Marshall shooting dead, racketeering defendant and gang member Siale Angilau as he attacks a testifying witness. The Department of Justice had wanted to suppress the video for fear it would spark a wave of gang-related retaliation. Rough cut (no reporter narration). |

Fired by Trump over Twitter, Tillerson doesn't thank him Posted: 13 Mar 2018 12:06 PM PDT Hours after President Trump announced his firing over Twitter, outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday left the former real estate entrepreneur off the list of people he praised and thanked in a brief speech about his accomplishments and the future of his department. Tillerson, looking and sounding defeated as he delivered an eight-minute farewell, said he was delegating his duties to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, effective at the end of the day, and formally ending his own watch as the top U.S. diplomat at the end of the month. The former Exxon chief told reporters in the State Department briefing room that Trump had telephoned him from Air Force One a little after noon — some five hours after the president announced to the world that Tillerson was out, to be replaced by CIA director Mike Pompeo. |

Russia says U.S. plans to strike Damascus, pledges military response Posted: 13 Mar 2018 08:52 AM PDT Russia said on Tuesday it had information that the United States planned to bomb the government quarter in Damascus on an invented pretext, and said it would respond militarily if it felt Russian lives were threatened by such an attack. Valery Gerasimov, head of Russia's General Staff, said Moscow had information that rebels in the enclave of eastern Ghouta were planning to fake a chemical weapons attack against civilians and blame it on the Syrian army. |

Ford recalling 1.38 mn sedans over steering defect Posted: 14 Mar 2018 07:47 AM PDT Ford announced Wednesday a North American recall of 1.38 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans to address loose steering wheel bolts that could lead to the steering wheel detaching. In the cars being recalled, the steering wheel "may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time," Ford said. If not addressed, "a steering wheel could potentially detach and lead to a loss of steering control and increased risk of a crash," the company added. |

Finland is world's happiest country, U.S. discontent grows: U.N. report Posted: 14 Mar 2018 05:23 AM PDT Finland is the world's happiest country, according to an annual survey issued on Wednesday that found Americans were getting less happy even as their country became richer. Burundi came bottom in the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network's (SDSN) 2018 World Happiness Report which ranked 156 countries according to things such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity and absence of corruption. "I've joked with the other Americans that we are living the American dream here in Finland," said Brianna Owens, who moved from the United States and is now a teacher in Espoo, Finland's second biggest city with a population of around 280,000. |
