U.S. Sending 1,500 More Troops to Middle East amid Iran Tensions Posted: 24 May 2019 11:57 AM PDT President Trump announced Friday that the U.S. will send about 1,500 more troops to the Middle East to play a "mostly protective" role, amid escalating tensions with Iran."We want to have protection," Trump said at the White House as he left for Japan. "Some very talented people are going to the Middle East right now and we'll see what happens."About 1,000 troops will be sent to the region and close to 600 will have their deployments in the Middle East extended, according to the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Rear Admiral Michael Gilday."The Iranians have said publicly they were going to do things," Gilday said. "We learned through intelligence reporting they have acted upon those threats and they have actually attacked."The Pentagon will also send a Patriot anti-missile battalion, a fighter-aircraft squadron, engineers, and more intelligence and reconnaissance aircraft.Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan said U.S. Central Command had requested the additional troops and that they are intended to "improve our force protection and safeguard U.S. forces given the ongoing threat posed by Iranian forces, including the IRGC [Iran's Revolutionary Guard] and its proxies.""In my capacity, the most difficult decision is authorizing a mission that I know puts the men and women of our Armed forces in harm's way," Shanahan said during his address at the U.S. Naval Academy's commencement ceremony. "I will continue to give those orders, but only when absolutely necessary."The Trump administration deployed four bombers as well as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier-strike group to the Persian Gulf earlier this month amid fears that Iran was transporting short-range ballistic missiles in the region. The U.S. currently has about 5,200 troops in Iraq and 2,000 in Syria.Tensions between Iran and the U.S. have intensified since April, when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced an end to the exemptions from U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil and gas that eight countries had been granted."If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again," Trump wrote on Twitter. |
Life in prison for 'evil' loner who kidnapped US teen, killed parents Posted: 24 May 2019 02:28 PM PDT Calling him the "embodiment of evil," a US judge on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old man to life in prison for murdering a couple in their home in order to kidnap their 13-year-old daughter. Jake Patterson pleaded guilty in March to first degree murder and kidnapping for shooting dead James and Denise Closs in their rural Wisconsin home last October. In handing down the maximum sentence of life without parole, Judge James Babler rejected defense attorneys' pleas for the possibility of parole in several decades' time. |

Amanda Eller, Missing Maui Yoga Instructor, Ate Berries and Drank From Waterfalls to Survive Posted: 25 May 2019 08:24 AM PDT Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Maui Police Department/FacebookAmanda Eller, the 35-year-old yoga instructor and physical therapist who went missing on a hike in a Maui forest on May 8, ate plants and berries and drank from the base of waterfalls to survive, her rescuers say. Hours after rescuers in a helicopter plucked Eller from a ravine, she said that she had to make the choice to stay alive while lost for 16 days in the forest."There were times of total fear and loss and wanting to give up, and it did come down to life and death, and I had to choose," Eller said from her hospital bed on Saturday. "I chose life."Eller also thanked the volunteers who tirelessly searched for her, the Maui community, and those who donated to help fund the search. "People that know me, that don't know me, just under the idea of helping one person make it out of the woods alive just warms my heart," she said in a video posted on the Facebook page "Find Amanda."Chris Berquist, a friend who was fired from a part-time job for not returning to work until he found Eller, told Maui Now that she was "alive and well" and, despite cuts to her legs and severe sun exposure, was "walking and healthy.""We found her in a stream bed, she was waving up at us while we were in the helicopter, and we got her out nice and safe," Berquist told ABC News Radio. "She was not injured. She has a little bit of exposure from the sun, a little bit of sunburn. She lost her shoes a few days in. But no injuries."She was last seen buying a Mother's Day present on the surveillance video of a local shop on May 8. Eller's family reported her missing when she did not answer calls after going hiking. Her white SUV was found in the Makawao Forest Reserve parking lot with her cellphone and wallet inside, prompting fears that she might have been abducted. Her friends and family offered a $50,000 reward for anyone who could provide information about her disappearance. More than 60 volunteers worked tirelessly to comb the area where she was thought to have hiked, but her family now said she slipped into a deep ravine between two waterfalls, slightly twisting her leg, and could not climb out. Rescuers had to be air-lifted in and out of the ravine to carry out the rescue.Eller's father John told a local news channel that he had been "bawling like a baby" since hearing the news. He said that she was "mentally 100%" but that she had skin damage to her feet and legs from sun exposure. Another friend involved in her rescue, Javier Cantellops, a former Special Operations Airborne Ranger with the 3rd Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, told a local news station what it was like when they spotted her: "We all look to our right… and out of the woodwork, man, you see Amanda Eller, my friend, coming out, waving her hands," he said. "It was unbelievable, dude." Eller's mother Julia said she had never given up hope on finding her daughter alive. "I felt in my heart she was alive," she told KHON2. "I never gave up hope for a minute. Even though at times I would have those moments of despair, I stayed strong for her because I knew we would find her if we just stayed with the program, stayed persistent and that we would eventually find her."Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Four more deaths on traffic-jammed Everest Posted: 24 May 2019 10:58 AM PDT A traffic jam of climbers in the Everest "death zone" was blamed for two of four new deaths reported Friday, heightening concerns that the drive for profits is trumping safety on the world's highest peak. Nepal has issued a record 381 permits costing $11,000 each for the current spring climbing season, bringing in much-needed money for the impoverished Himalayan country. The four latest deaths reported on Friday, taking the toll from a deadly week on the overcrowded peak to eight, include two Indians and a Nepali on the Nepal side and an Austrian on the way down on the northern Tibetan side, officials and expedition organisers said. |
Theresa May Set to Announce Her Timetable to Quit as Tory Leader Posted: 24 May 2019 12:29 AM PDT Theresa May is set to announce a timetable for her resignation as U.K. prime minister, plunging British politics into turmoil and putting the fate of Brexit in doubt. May plans to quit as Tory leader with an election to choose her replacement beginning on June 10, according to people familiar with the matter. The result will shape the direction of Brexit and all options -- from leaving with no deal to canceling the divorce -- are now back on the table. |
Simulator training remains 'possible option' for Boeing 737 MAX pilots in Canada Posted: 23 May 2019 08:15 PM PDT Simulator training remains a "possible option" for Canadian Boeing 737 MAX pilots, but it's too early to say whether it would be mandatory, a Transport Canada official said on Thursday night, further distancing the regulator from previous remarks by the country's transport minister. "It would be premature not seeing what Boeing has fully proposed yet to determine if simulator training will in fact be included," said Nicholas Robinson, the regulator's director general, civil aviation, told reporters on a conference call following a meeting of global regulators in Texas. Canada's Transport Minister Marc Garneau called in April for pilots to received simulator training for Boeing's software fix. |

Violence and disruption against abortion clinics at highest rates since 1999 Posted: 25 May 2019 09:16 AM PDT Violence and disruption against abortion clinics in the US increased to its highest levels since the 1990s last year, a report by the National Abortion Federation has found. The increase in violence was attributed, at least in part, to president Donald Trump and his administration's rhetoric. The report noted a significant increase in obstruction, vandalism, and trespassing, with 1,135 incidents of trespassing recorded in 2018 - the most since the NAF began tracking the crime in 1999.There were also 3,038 instances of obstruction, a 78 per cent increase compared to the previous year, and nearly 100,000 instances of picketing."Anti-choice individuals and groups have been emboldened by the rhetoric of president Trump, vice president Pence, and other elected officials and we are seeing this play out in more instances of activities meant to intimidate abortion providers and disrupt patient services," said Dr Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, who serves as interim president and CEO of NAF.She added: "Demonising health care providers and women who rely on them for abortion care has become one of the go-to tactics for anti-choice politicians. Those lies have consequences and it is not the anti-choice politicians who are facing those consequences; it is those who are denied abortion care and the providers targeted by threats, harassment, and violence who are. It is time for the demonizing of abortion providers and their patients to end."Given the political climate and the increase in hate incidents throughout the country, it is more important than ever that law enforcement and prosecutors appropriately respond to anti-abortion criminal activity."The study did note a decrease in stalking, burglary, assault, and battery against abortion providers. It comes during a fresh wave of anti-abortion legislation such as the Alabama abortion ban, which is currently being contested in a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood, and "heartbeat bills" which ban elective abortion after a foetal heartbeat is detectable. As a foetal heartbeat is first detectable at six weeks - a point where many pregnant people may not even know they are pregnant - these initiatives are seen as a back-door abortion ban and are also being contested in court. Politicians in support of banning abortion hope these cases will rise to the Supreme Court of the United States and lead to an overturning of Roe V Wade, which set the precedent for elective abortion until the end of the second trimester in the US. |
The Glock 36: A Really Big Gun in a Small Package Posted: 24 May 2019 08:00 PM PDT Until recently, the most common compact .45 caliber handgun was of a type known as the Officer's model. A derivative of the 1911A1 Government, in 2011 it was finally superseded by an even lighter pistol—the Glock 36. Chambered in .45 ACP and following the same winning formula as previous Glocks, the model 36 could be the best compact single stack .45 on the market today. The 1911 .45 caliber pistol, designed by John Moses Browning, was one of the most successful pistols of all time. Adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces in time for World War I, it served on through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the waning years of the Cold War. The slab-sided, all-steel pistol was large, heavy, and imposing, but it was also durable and could last for decades. Colt's Manufacturing subsequently developed and released a smaller and lighter version, the Colt Commander, but it failed to gain traction to replace the original 1911A1. |

Hezbollah warns US plan could naturalise Palestinian diaspora Posted: 25 May 2019 12:22 PM PDT The head of Lebanon's Shiite movement Hezbollah warned Saturday that a long-delayed US peace plan could see Palestinian refugees permanently settled in host countries across the region. Speaking days after the US announced a May conference in Bahrain to lay out economic aspects of its long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned of an "ominous deal aimed at eliminating the Palestinian cause". The right of return for more than 700,000 refugees who were expelled or fled during the creation of the State of Israel in the late 1940s -- and their millions of descendants -- is a key pillar of the Palestinian cause. |

U.S. oil drillers cut rigs for third week in a row -Baker Hughes Posted: 24 May 2019 10:03 AM PDT U.S. energy firms this week reduced the number of oil rigs operating for a third week in a row as weaker oil prices encourage drillers to follow through on plans to cut spending. Drillers cut five oil rigs in the week to May 24, bringing the total count down to 797, the lowest since March 2018, General Electric Co's Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday. The rig count, an early indicator of future output, has declined over the past five months as independent exploration and production companies cut spending on new drilling as they focus more on earnings growth instead of increased output. |

Florida state Representative says God has told him to rewrite abortion bill with no exceptions Posted: 24 May 2019 03:26 PM PDT A Florida state representative told a group that God told him to a rewrite an abortion bill without exceptions for rape or incest. In a speech given to Women for Responsible Legislation group in Pensacola, Florida, state representative Mike Hill said God spoke directly to him about a restrictive abortion bill he had previously tried and failed to pass in Florida's legislature."As plain as day, God spoke to me," Mr Hill, a Republican, told the group. "He said 'that wasn't my bill,' talking about the heartbeat detection bill that I filed. He said 'that wasn't my bill.'""I knew immediately what he was talking about," the state representative confirmed. The bill which Mr Hill, and, allegedly, God, were referring to would have restricted abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Mr Hill's proposed version of the ban, which is currently sweeping the nation in various forms, included exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergency, human trafficking, and domestic violence. Mr Hill told the group he included the exception in hopes of getting the bill passed, but the proposed law died before getting a committee hearing, which he lamented was more focused on "health care, transportation, and the Everglades" than his attempt at an abortion ban, according to the Pensacola News Journal.Mr Hill says he's currently working on a new bill, with outside help."[God] said, 'you remove those exceptions and you file it again.' And I said 'yes Lord, I will'," Mr Hill said. "It's coming back. It's coming back. We are going to file that bill without any exceptions, just like what we saw passed in Alabama."On Friday, the ACLU and Planned Parenthood sued the state of Alabama for its unconstitutional abortion ban. Representatives of the ACLU of Alabama told The Independent on Thursday that they expect the legal fight to take around three years. Abortion remains legal in the state for now. |
US judge blocks Mississippi 'heartbeat' abortion ban Posted: 24 May 2019 11:20 PM PDT A US federal judge Friday blocked Mississippi's strict abortion law which would have banned the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy. The bill banning abortion where a heartbeat is detectable -- from six weeks -- was passed in March and was due to go into effect on July 1. Mississippi has passed another law banning abortions prior to viability," district judge Carlton Reeves wrote in his order. |

Trump’s Public Enemies List Is an Impeachable Offense Posted: 24 May 2019 07:00 PM PDT Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast / Photos GettyLong before becoming president, Donald Trump called for the jailing of his adversaries. Aided by Attorney General William Barr, he may now actually be training the full force of federal law enforcement against his enemies, real or perceived. Unlike Richard Nixon, who acted in secret, Trump is corrupting the justice system openly and publicly. The seriousness of such a presidential abuse of power, and its potential for undermining the constitutional order, could well surpass any of the crimes detailed in the Mueller Report. Indeed, the Congress long ago recognized that such misconduct can merit impeachment.Trump's desire to investigate the investigators who uncovered the Russian plot to elect him president has taken on a special urgency since the release of the Mueller Report, with Trump repeatedly accusing government officials of "treason," and the White House declaring: "This whole thing was a TAKEDOWN ATTEMPT at the President of the United States." On Thursday night, after Trump had spent days excoriating the purportedly "treasonous" investigators by name, he announced he had granted Barr the "full and complete authority" to declassify documents relating to the Russia probe. The White House also stated that Trump had directed intelligence agencies to "quickly and fully" cooperate with the investigation into the investigation. Trump's 'Cover-Up' Tantrum Means Democrats Can Go in for the KillIt's reminiscent of Nixon's secret scheme to "use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies," as then-White House Counsel John Dean put it, by manipulating "grant availability, federal contract, litigation, prosecution, etc." Nixon directed the IRS provide potentially damaging information against some of his enemies. Although the agency's commissioner refused Nixon's demand, the scheme became part of the impeachment case against Nixon, which accused him of illegally endeavoring "to obtain [information] from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens." While much of Nixon's scheme was forestalled, Trump appears poised to effectuate his. Barr recently named Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham (best known for investigating the FBI's corrupt relationship with Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger) to head up an inquiry into the "origins" of the Russia investigation. Unnamed government officials have attempted to minimize the significance of the inquiry by stating to the press that it does not currently entail the use of grand jury subpoenas, but that of course could change at any time—indeed, Senator Lindsey Graham is publicly demanding as much.Barr, meanwhile, has become remarkably open about his intent to follow the president's lead by making the investigators the focus of as much opprobrium as possible. In Senate testimony several weeks ago, Barr denied endorsing the president's accusation that there was "improper surveillance"of the Trump campaign. More recently, however, he responded to a Fox News interviewer's question whether he "smell[ed] a rat" at the FBI by stating: "I don't know if I'd describe it as a rat. I would just say that the answers that I'm getting are not sufficient." In the same interview, Barr emphasized that officials at the highest levels of the FBI and other agencies were involved, in a plain allusion to James Comey and the other former high-level law enforcement and intelligence officials that Trump has repeatedly excoriated. Trump's initial target was Hillary Clinton.Trump implored Jeff Sessions (ultimately with some success) to reopen an investigation into unsubstantiated claims that she had improperly interfered in the sale of a uranium mining concern, Uranium One, to a Russian company as secretary of state. In November 2017, the New York Times's called 10 former attorneys general, but only one responded to its question whether Sessions should accede to Trump's loud demands: It was Barr, who said he saw no problem with the president training the sights of the Department of Justice on a political enemy, as long as it was "warrant[ed]." Barr even opined that the evidence against Clinton was stronger than any potential evidence of wrongdoing by the president, this despite the fact that the primary "evidence" for the Uranium One allegations came from a book sponsored by Steve Bannon. Barr seemed unconcerned with the risk posed by a president employing the Justice Department as a mechanism for exacting revenge against a former electoral opponent. Indeed, Barr declared, the department would be "abdicating its responsibility" if it did not pursue Clinton as Trump desired. In a memorandum he later wrote to the DOJ officials overseeing Mueller, and shared with Trump's defense team, before becoming attorney general, Barr asserted that there is "no limit" on the president's authority to direct the course of law enforcement investigations, including those he is personally interested in. In fact, Trump's effort to undermine the legitimacy of the now-completed Russia investigation is part-and-parcel of Trump's earlier efforts to limit and even terminate the investigation while it was ongoing, conduct that the Mueller Report identified as potential obstruction of justice, and that Trump (with Barr's support) has asserted merely amounted to "fighting back."Barr suggested to the Times that there is just no problem with a president personally selecting who should or should not become the subjects of criminal investigations, as long as the facts "warrant" inquiries. But that entirely misses the point. As the nation recognized during the Watergate era, if the president employs the apparatus of the federal government to single out and punish political or personal enemies by making them the focus of law enforcement investigations, the perception (and the reality) of fairness on which our justice system depends will be gravely endangered. Why ‘Very Fine Person’ Andrew Jackson Is Staying on the $20 in Place of Harriet Tubman Posted: 24 May 2019 02:02 AM PDT Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photo Getty"I had reasoned this out in my mind; there was one of two things I had a right to: liberty or death. If I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive."―Harriet TubmanThe Republican party never misses an opportunity to destroy an opportunity to expand its base. At every opportunity, President Trump showcases his disdain for diversity as he stands up for "very fine people." The president who referred to the "shithole countries" of Africa has hurled insults at black women in America, like longtime ally and senior White House aide turned "dog" Omarosa, "low IQ" congresswoman Maxine Waters and her "wacky" colleague Frederica Wilson, and reporters like "loser" April Ryan, "racist questioner" Yamiche Alcindor and "stupid questioner" Abby Phillip. Now comes word that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin reportedly plans to "delay" the printing of the new $20 bill until after Trump leaves office. That's because the bill, under a plan set forth by President Obama, would replace slave owner, "Indian" hater and Trump hero Andrew Jackson, nicknamed King Mob, with the former slave and legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman, the visionary behind the famed underground railroad. How far the party of the abolitionists has fallen from its founding in 1854. The storied party of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and the Suffragists at Seneca Falls, the party that fought for the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution was the party of African Americans all the way up until the 1960 election between JFK and Richard Nixon. Tricky Dicky's loss led him to run a "southern strategy" in his 1968 and 1972 campaigns, driving a wedge between the GOP and black voters that has widened for more than 50 years. The bottom line is that Trump, who as a candidate called the plan to put Tubman on the bill "pure political correctness," does not care if he offends black voters, having won the support of just 13 percent of black men and just 4 percent of black women in 2016. For the first time in decades, there is not one black woman in the president's cabinet or among his White House senior staff. Make no mistake, Trump is taking us backward to a time when women, and certainly women of color, remained in their place. Their place will not be on our currency until we elect a better president.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. EU vote faces new covert digital threats: report Posted: 25 May 2019 01:27 AM PDT New players are exploiting internet lawlessness to disrupt democracy at this week's European elections, says a new report that points a finger at far-right populists and cyber militias. With the vote running from May 23-26, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) investigated the role of covert digital propaganda in Britain, France, Germany, Italy Spain and Poland. "New actors are taking advantage of the lawlessness of the internet, often aligned with hostile states such as Russia, as well as American special interests, but also creating their own, pan-European campaigns," said the report released Friday. |
New report teases crazy next-gen tech coming to the iPhone 11s next year Posted: 24 May 2019 11:43 AM PDT Forget about all those gorgeous renders that depict the new design changes coming to the 2019 iPhone 11 series phones, as there's a far more exciting rumor in town. A new report says the 2020 iPhone 11s models will come with a crazy next-gen feature that's not currently found on any other smartphone. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S10 was released earlier this year, bringing a brand new all-screen design, one that looks a lot better than alternatives. It also introduced another feature that nobody in the business has for the time being. Apple has been developing its own version of this tech for years, and while it looked like the company might end up never actually using it in its iPhones, this new report seems to indicate Apple may have reversed course. The notch may not look as good as an Infinity-O display, but it still packs a feature that's not available on any Samsung phone" 3D facial recognition that can be used for secure authentication and mobile payments. Come 2020, the iPhone will receive a bunch of upgrades, according to a Barclays report from Blayne Curtis seen by MacRumors, including 5G support and 3D-sensing rear cameras. More interestingly, the phones could feature "acoustic fingerprint technology," which could turn the entire display into a Touch ID sensor to let iPhone users unlock their phones with a fingerprint once again.Acoustic or ultrasonic fingerprint technology is what Samsung uses for its in-display fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S10 series. Competing devices from top Android makers rely on optical sensors. Samsung's sensor still only allows a single point of contact for reading one's fingerprint, however. If this new report pans out, Apple's tech will read your fingerprint no matter where you touch the screen.Apple dropped Touch ID on iPhones last year, after introducing the first phone without a fingerprint sensor in September 2017. As expected, not everyone liked it, since some people think Touch ID is more convenient than Face ID. However, Apple had patents describing in-display fingerprint sensors that bounce sound waves off the screen and a fingerprint to authenticate users, well before the Galaxy S10 came out.If this note is accurate, then Apple might reintroduce Touch ID next year, offering users a more advanced version than what's available on Android phones, Galaxy S10 included. Curtis also claims that Apple will launch an iPhone SE 2 in 2020, with the phone expected to feature the same main internal components as the iPhone 8.The 2019 iPhones, meanwhile, are expected to deliver the same design as their predecessors, the same report claims. The report notes that the phones will get triple-lens rear cameras and will lose 3D Touch support. The iPhone 11R, or whatever Apple ends up calling it, will get 4GB of RAM instead of 3GB in the iPhone XR. Finally, all phones should hit manufacturing at some point in July or August, according to the report. |
Audi to swap out TT for all-electric model Posted: 24 May 2019 07:21 AM PDT Audi's CFO has indicated that the company is "shedding old baggage," meaning it will be discontinuing the TT coupe to replace it with a BEV, according to a Bloomberg report. As reported by Bloomberg Thursday, Audi will be discontinuing the TT coupe and possibly the R8 as well in order to make space in the portfolio for new fully-electric models. The battery powertrain push comes as a result of the company's initiative to launch 20 fully-electric vehicles by 2025, a point when sales of electric cars both hybrid and 100% electric are expected to make up to 40% of automobile deliveries. |

One U.S. Battleship Fired 65,000 .50 Caliber Rounds During Pearl Harbor Posted: 24 May 2019 06:00 PM PDT Wearing his dungarees, Winsett ran the 50 yards back to the ship and his battle station, a .50-caliber machine gun facing toward the bow on the starboard side. He still believed it was just "another drill." As soon as the stations were manned, Condition "YOKE" (Enemy Is Probable) was set by Captain C.M. Cooke, Jr.On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, Gunner's Mate Russell Winsett, 19, awoke at 5 am as he did most mornings. As he went topside he could see that the weather was like almost every December day in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, sunny blue skies with a few white puffy clouds. This was a day Winsett was looking forward to. He thought to himself, "It's gonna be a beautiful day to visit the island with my cousin, his wife, and three kids." Winsett had met his relative William Pope several months earlier when his family wrote and told him that he had a distant cousin also stationed at Pearl Harbor. Winsett had found the ship William was serving on, contacted him, and they met for a short visit. The next day his cousin went on a two-month cruise. Winsett was looking forward to reconnecting with his family member and getting to meet his wife and kids while taking in the sights of Hawaii. It was a long way from home for this Alabama farm boy. |
