It is one of the worst fires ever recorded in Australia. A body recently discovered in the Niagara River has been identified as American Kirk Jones, 53, who had jumped into the falls in 2003 and lived, the Syracuse Post-Standard said, citing New York State Park Police. The inflatable ball was found empty at the foot of the thundering water. |

Brazil's Temer running 'criminal organization,' tycoon accuser says Posted: 17 Jun 2017 10:51 AM PDT JBS chairman Joesley Batista caused a major political uproar last month when he handed to authorities, in connection with a wide-reaching corruption scandal, an audio recording in which Temer appeared to condone the payment of hush money to a former lawmaker now in prison. Batista's remarks were made in his first interview since he clinched a plea bargain deal with authorities as the nationwide anti-graft operation codenamed "Car Wash" began targeting his business dealings. Batista agreed to cooperate in exchange for avoiding a conviction. |

Raging Portugal forest fires kill dozens Posted: 18 Jun 2017 01:31 PM PDT Pedrógão Grande (Portugal) (AFP) - Raging forest fires in central Portugal have killed at least 61 people, many burnt to death in their cars, the government said Sunday, in the country's worst such disaster in recent history. Authorities declared three days of national mourning as more than 800 firefighters and 260 vehicles battled the blaze, which also left 62 people injured, amid scenes of devastation. The fire erupted Saturday in the municipality of Pedrogao Grande in central Portugal, apparently caused by a lightning strike, and spread furiously in several directions. |

The collision between the 154-metre (500 foot) guided missile destroyer and 222-metre Philippine-flagged container ship ACX Crystal happened around 2:30 am (1730 GMT Friday) off the coast of the Izu peninsula, southwest of Tokyo. |

From coast to coast and beyond, American politicians say that the President has left them with little choice in facing the devastating consequences climate changes seems to pose. Tesla mechanics rescue a cute kitten that got stuck inside a Model X bumper Posted: 17 Jun 2017 01:52 PM PDT Of all the things that could possibly go wrong with your electric self-driving car, finding a kitten inside your bumper may be the cutest of them all. An unnamed Model X owner uploaded two clips to YouTube on Saturday that show a teeny kitten trapped inside the bumper of his vehicle. "So this morning, I heard a meow in my garage," the man said in the clip. "And we don't have a cat." After narrowing down the meows to his vehicle, then the rear bumper, the man decided to bring his car into a Tesla service center to get a little help rescuing the cat safely. French mayor arrested for clash with right-winger Posted: 17 Jun 2017 12:38 PM PDT A 55-year-old village mayor was arrested on Saturday for allegedly attacking a prominent French right-wing parliamentary candidate while she was out campaigning. Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, a flamboyant 44-year-old candidate for the Republicans party, was canvassing for votes at a Paris market on Thursday when a man called her a "stupid bobo" -- a blend of hipster and bourgeois -- and shoved her leaflets in her face, causing her to fall. Vincent Debraize -- mayor of Champignolles, a small village in Normandy in northern France -- denied he had verbally or physically assaulted her, Kosciusko-Morizet's lawyer Xavier Autain told AFP. |

Science Leader No More? China Challenges US Dominance Posted: 17 Jun 2017 05:50 AM PDT The United States still leads the world in scientific research, at least in publishing the most biomedical studies in top-tier journals and spending the most money on research and development (R&D). America's dominance in the scientific world is slowly shrinking, the researchers found, largely because China has invested vast amounts of money in science over the past two decades. In 2015, China's biomedical research teams ranked No. 4 on the top 10 list for the total number of new discoveries published in six top-tier journals, the researchers said. |

The Virginia shooting fallout was predictably partisan. Can this ever be fixed? Posted: 17 Jun 2017 04:00 AM PDT Members of the crowd at the annual congressional baseball game call for unity – but will they ever truly get it? It would be hard to imagine an institution more out of tune with the prevailing tone of modern American politics than the annual congressional baseball game. The Republican and Democratic teams play each other to win, but they do so in a spirit of friendship across the aisle that is all but nonexistent on Capitol Hill these days. |

Deadlocked Cosby jury asks about 'reasonable doubt' Posted: 16 Jun 2017 07:55 PM PDT The deadlocked US jury battling to reach a verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial asked the judge Friday to define "reasonable doubt" and again asked to hear from the fallen star's testimony. The 79-year-old pioneering black actor could face spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against 44-year-old Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in January 2004. The 12-member jury had told Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday that they were deadlocked, but the Pennsylvania judge ordered them to continue with no cut-off point to stop trying to reach a unanimous agreement. |
