Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:25 AM PDT A major manhunt was underway in Sweden on Wednesday as police scrambled to track down a pair of thieves who robbed the country's crown jewels in broad daylight before escaping on a speed boat. In a daring heist reminiscent of Blake Edwards' Pink Panther films, the crowns of King Karl IX and Queen Christina, as well as a royal orb, were snatched from Strängnäs Cathedral by two men on Tuesday around lunchtime. Police raided two locations in Strängnäs on Wednesday but admitted they were struggling to find any clues. "It's 1-0 to them right now," police spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Swedish reporters. "It is not possible to put an economic value on this, it is invaluable items of national interest." The 1611 gold burial crowns were originally interred with the couple but were later exhumed and had been on display in a locked cabinet in the cathedral, 60 miles west of Stockholm. "The alarm went off when the burglars smashed the security glass and stole the artifacts," Catharina Frojd, a spokeswoman for the 14th-century cathedral said. Another police spokesman, Stefan Dangardt, said Interpol had been brought in to help apprehend the jewel thieves, along with Swedish helicopters and canine units. "Several people were seen leaving the church by boat or water scooter after the theft. We have spoken to witnesses, but we are interested in further information from anyone that has made any observations," he added. Tom Rowsell, who was having lunch outside the cathedral where he is to be married this weekend, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet he saw two men dash from the building toward a motorboat waiting on Lake Malaren. "I saw a white little boat with an outboard motor on the back. The two men hurriedly jumped on board and it sped off," he said. Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther "I knew immediately they were burglars, because of the way they were behaving," he added. The police have issued vague descriptions of the thieves: one is said to be skinny and wearing a light beige jacket with dark long pants. The other is roughly six feet tall, heavier, and was wearing a dark jacket It is not the first time robbers have whisked away the jewels of European royalty. In 2013, King Johan III's burial regalia was stolen from Vasteras Cathedral. It was recovered several days later in a garbage bag left on a a countryside road, following an anonymous tip. Britain's own crown jewels were nearly stolen in 1671 by Anglo-Irish Colonel Thomas Blood, who was captured as he fled the Tower of London with St Edward's Crown, the Scepter with the Cross, and the Sovereign's Orb. |

A Trader Joe's shootout, an innocent death, and soul searching for LAPD Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:00 AM PDT A makeshift memorial outside the Silver Lake Trader Joe's, where a young woman was killed in the crossfire between a gunman and police. To shoot an innocent bystander in pursuit of a violent criminal is every police officer's nightmare. In Los Angeles, with its vexed history of police brutality, racial tension, and high-speed car chases that local television networks feast on, it elicits a special sort of horror, a throwback to an ugly not-so-distant past that the city would much rather forget. |

US Treasury considers bypassing Congress to secure $100bn capital gains tax cut Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:57 AM PDT Donald Trump's administration is considering a tax cut worth $100 billion that would mainly benefit the well off and be delivered without legislation, it emerged on Tuesday. The US Treasury is looking at whether to allow people to take account of inflation when they work out what capital gains tax they owe. Steven Mnuchin, the US treasury secretary, said in a recent interview that officials were looking at whether the change could be achieved through regulation rather than legislation, according to The New York Times. Such a move would mean Congress would be bypassed. Capital gains tax is usually levied around 20 per cent for Americans and is paid on assets, such as property or stocks, when they are sold. Under the current system, the tax is paid on the difference between the original purchase price and the new sale price. Under Mr Mnuchin's idea, the original price would be adjusted for inflation – dramatically reducing the amount which would be hit by the tax. The change, according to estimates cited in The New York Times, could result in a tax cut worth $100 billion and would disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans, who own more assets. The paper said Mr Mnuchin had discussed the idea on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit meeting in Argentina this month. He was quoted as saying: "If it can't get done through a legislation process, we will look at what tools at Treasury we have to do it on our own and we'll consider that "We are studying that internally, and we are also studying the economic costs and the impact on growth." Chuck Schumer holds the post of Senate Minority Leader, making him the most senior Democrat in the US Senate. Credit: Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg Democrats criticised the suggestion that such a change could be adopted without full legislation going through Congress. Chuck Schumer, the most senior Democrat senator, said: "At a time when the deficit is out of control, wages are flat and the wealthiest are doing better than ever, to give the top 1 percent another advantage is an outrage and shows the Republicans' true colours. "Furthermore, Mr Mnuchin thinks he can do it on his own, but everyone knows this must be done by legislation." George Bush reportedly considered the move while president in 1992 but rejected it after concluding the Treasury Department did not have the power to make the change on its own. |

'Victory is near,' Syria's Assad tells troops Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:53 AM PDT Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his troops on Wednesday they were close to winning the country's seven-year civil war after inflicting a succession of defeats on rebels. Early last year, government forces held just 17 percent of national territory but a series of blistering offensives has since forced the rebels out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's government in control of nearly two-thirds of the country. "Our date with victory is near," Assad wrote in an open letter to the rank and file. |
