Ohio sues five drug companies over opioid crisis Posted: 31 May 2017 11:19 AM PDT The state of Ohio on Wednesday sued five major drug manufacturers, accusing them of misrepresenting the risks of prescription opioid painkillers that have fueled a sky-rocketing drug addiction epidemic. The suit, filed by Attorney General Mike DeWine, comes as a growing number of state and local governments are suing drugmakers and distributors, seeking to hold them accountable for a deadly and costly opioid crisis. Opioid drugs, including prescription painkillers and heroin, killed more than 33,000 people in the United States in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. |
Eyeing growth boost, Kenya opens Chinese-built railway Posted: 31 May 2017 12:37 AM PDT Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday inaugurated a Chinese-built railway, the country's biggest infrastructure project since independence that is aimed at cementing its role as the gateway to East Africa. Dancers and a military band entertained passengers and dignitaries from Kenya and China shortly before they, and Kenyatta, were to take the maiden journey from a gleaming new terminal in the port city of Mombasa to Nairobi. "Today we celebrate one of the key cornerstones to Kenya's transformation to an industrialised, prosperous, middle-income country," Kenyatta said at the launch. |

Dads' Brains React Differently to Sons and Daughters Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:53 AM PDT Dads with toddler-age daughters interact differently with their kids than fathers with toddler-age sons, a new study suggests. In addition, their brains' responses to their tots' pictures differed from those of dads with sons, according to the findings, which were published May 22 in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience. The findings indicate that gender-based differences in fathers' behaviors appear to show up while children are very young, said lead study author Jennifer Mascaro, an assistant professor of family and preventive medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. |

As NKorea threat grows, US plans next anti-ICBM test in 2018 Posted: 31 May 2017 11:10 AM PDT The US military will follow up its experimental shoot-down of an intercontinental ballistic missile by firing two interceptors simultaneously at an incoming dummy warhead in a "real world" test next year, a Pentagon official said Wednesday. The high-tech, extremely costly tests of US missile defenses come as North Korea continues to push ahead with development of potentially nuclear-tipped ICBMs. Wednesday's first-ever success at knocking a mock-up ICBM out of the sky as it headed toward the United States was called a "critical milestone" in firming up the country's missile defenses. |
Droughts, floods, storms and more: what climate change looks like around the world Posted: 01 Jun 2017 10:09 AM PDT President Donald Trump on Thursday will announce his decision on whether to keep the United States in a global pact to fight climate change, as a source close to the matter said he was preparing to pull out of the Paris accord. Scientists have said a U.S. withdrawal from the deal could speed up the effects of global climate change, leading to heat waves, floods, droughts, and more frequent violent storms. Here's a look at climate change around the world. |
Recent immigrants to the U.S. are better educated: report Posted: 01 Jun 2017 02:08 PM PDT Nearly half the recent immigrants to the United States have college degrees, reflecting a steady increase in educational attainment fueled largely by growing numbers of people from Asia, a study released on Thursday showed. Rising immigration from countries such as India, China and the Philippines helped increase the share of arrivals with a bachelor's degree to 48 percent between 2011 and 2015 from 27 percent in the five years through 1990, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data by the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based nonpartisan think tank. The findings followed comments by President Donald Trump in March that the United States had "lower-skilled immigration" and should switch to a "merit-based" system to attract people who could support themselves rather than strain public resources. |

Parents at Greaves Adventist Academy, a private Christian school in Montreal, noticed Holmolka dropping off and picking up her children at the premises, but were alarmed to find out she had been spending time in classrooms, local media reported. |

McDonald's has made this secret burger hack an official menu item Posted: 30 May 2017 08:42 PM PDT Seems like McDonald's has been keeping track of how you've been messing with its food. It's figured out that Aussies have been swapping out the Big Mac's beef patties with chicken. So it did the only logical thing and put the often-requested burger on the menu. SEE ALSO: Five Guys beat In-N-Out as best burger chain, proving there really is no justice in the world Predictably it's called the Chicken Big Mac, and features all the other ingredients you'd get on the burger — lettuce, cheese, special sauce, on a sesame seed bun — but with McChicken patties instead. Image: mcdonald's australiaOf course the Chicken Big Mac isn't a purely Australian thing. The Chicken Big Mac is sold in Qatar, Egypt, the UAE and the Netherlands — but for the rest of the world you'll have to spend a little more time explaining your order. Also launching in Australia are the cheeseburger Shaker Fries, which have a seasoning that combines the taste of "beef, onions, pickle, ketchup, mustard and cheese" — you know, like a cheeseburger. Shaker Fries are oddly a big thing Down Under — a dude who was selling a bag and a sachet of the seasoning for A$1,000 (US$744) back in 2014. "It's very limited edition," Vandi Huynh told The City at the time. "It comes out less frequently than the Olympics, like once every six years." Jeremy Corbyn hints he could delay Donald Trump’s contentious state visit to Britain Posted: 31 May 2017 10:22 AM PDT Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has hinted he could delay Donald Trump's contentious state visit to Britain later this year if he is elected Prime Minister in seven days' time. In an interview with The Independent, Mr Corbyn said he was "very concerned" about the speed in which Mr Trump received the honour by Theresa May – just seven days after the political neophyte took office. The President's predecessor, Barack Obama, was extended the invitation by the former Prime Minister David Cameron over 800 days into his administration. |

The accident happened on Wednesday when one of two planes bombing rebel positions missed its target in the heart of Marawi City, where ground troops took on pro-Islamic State militants in a tenth day of fierce street battles. Accidents happen, like this," Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told a news conference. |
