U.S. expands VW pollution-skirting probe to other carmakers Posted: 21 Sep 2015 01:06 PM PDT The US government has expanded its investigation of pollution-skirting devices in diesel vehicles to other manufacturers after Volkswagen admitted it used them to thwart US environmental standards. The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that it will screen for so-called "defeat devices" in diesel vehicles on the road that are produced by other manufacturers. The California Air Resources Board is a partner in the investigation, an EPA spokesperson said in an email to AFP. |
Plan to admit more refugees faces stiff opposition in Congress Posted: 21 Sep 2015 04:14 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House plans to allow thousands more refugees into the United States face stiff opposition on Monday in the U.S. Congress, where Republican lawmakers demanded the right to review, and reject, the effort, citing fears of terrorism. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday announced an increase of 15,000 per year for the next two years in the number of refugees the country takes in. Under current law, Congress does not have to approve the Democratic administration's plan. |

Republican Walker exits 2016 presidential race Posted: 21 Sep 2015 03:23 PM PDT Republican Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin abruptly pulled out of the 2016 U.S. presidential race on Monday, doomed by a lightning-quick collapse from serious contender to a candidate struggling to raise money and his profile. Walker, reading a statement in the Wisconsin capital of Madison, decried the negative tone of the Republican campaign in remarks seemingly directed at New York billionaire Donald Trump. Walker harked back to the late Republican President Ronald Reagan as a model for the party because "he was an optimist." "Sadly the debate taking place in the Republican Party today is not focused on that optimistic view of America. |
Former peanut company CEO sentenced to 28 years for salmonella outbreak Posted: 21 Sep 2015 04:22 PM PDT By Rich McKay ALBANY, Ga. (Reuters) - The former owner of a peanut company in Georgia was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Monday for his role in a salmonella outbreak that killed nine people and sickened hundreds, a rare instance of jail time in a food contamination case. Stewart Parnell, 61, who once oversaw Peanut Corporation of America, and his brother, Michael Parnell, 56, who was a food broker on behalf of the company, were convicted on federal conspiracy charges in September 2014 for knowingly shipping salmonella-tainted peanuts to customers. Contamination at the company's plant in Blakely, Georgia, led to one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history and forced the company into liquidation. |
U.S. justices unlikely to address death penalty's constitutionality Posted: 21 Sep 2015 04:21 PM PDT When the last U.S. Supreme Court term ended in June with an unusual showdown over a decision approving Oklahoma's lethal injection process, some court watchers saw it as a sign the court might soon take up the bigger question of the constitutionality of the death penalty itself. In the June case, which upheld Oklahoma's procedures by a 5-to-4 margin, liberal justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined in a dissenting opinion that called for a full reexamination of capital punishment. |
